The original topic interested me which is why I continue to read it. Then quickly it became a Tolkien hate-fest with little to do with the OP. If you want to discuss Tolkien, fine, but do it somewhere else. The thread's called "Has GW lost their mind?" not "Is Tolkien a good author?".

Or you could cease because the debate is horribly off-topic.
I have a friend who's been eying these models since we saw them in a local GW store. He's never shown any interest in 40k or Fantasy due to the price-tag, but likes these so much he's almost determined to buy a few of the boxes (specifically the over-priced 4 model box). So I guess as crazy as these new prices are, the IP is still bringing in customers so they can get away with it.

So that excuses your attempt to break the swear filter how?
The topic moved on quite naturally and has done so for numerous pages now, why would this thread spontaneously revert to topic when no other thread on this site ever does when it goes this far?
In all honestly it should have been locked long ago, but while the thread remains open and I'm involved in the discussion I will continue to post, in spite of your petulant little outburst.

Rule 2: Stay on Topic
After reading and posting at Dakka for awhile you may feel as though you have developed friendships with some, perhaps many, of the other posters and readers. This is probably one of the most rewarding parts of participating in a discussion area. It is only natural to occasionally want to share information with your friends that is "Off Topic" (i.e. not related to the subject matter of the forum you are in).
While it may at first seem harmless to post a bit about off topic (OT) subjects, it can become a slippery slope. If others join in on OT posts then soon everybody has sent the discussion threads on so many tangents that it is difficult to follow the original topic. Further, posting off topic essentially violates Rule #1. People come to Dakka looking for information related to the hobby. It is not polite to post off topic items frequently.

Please.
The Tolkein discussion grew out of a tangent, so we let that run, but I think it'd be best if people took any further such discussion to a new thread.
Thank you.

I would love to see Reaper, Mantic or AoW release an "Adventuring Fellowship" set with a halfling and a bunch of dwarves who happen to look like hobos. Then I want to see them price it at about 1/3 the price of the GW set. That would make my day.

Then call the halfling a "Kinder" and name the Dwarves after the characters from Markus Heitz's Dwarves series. I hear German IP law is GW's Kryptonite...
Seriously, though, there are already tons of generic halflings, dwarves, gnomes, orcs and everything else. How could a boxed set of them change things?

Great idea! From now on I will use my 15mm German officer as a Hobbit. "Herr Baggenzie, your presence is required on zis adventure. Zis is nein a request!"
Thankfully, I have a diverse enough collection of dwarfs from GW, GW (LOTR, already wearing cloaks!), Mantic (metal and plastic are two different species!), AoW (Berserkers already look like hobos!), Reaper (motley!), and EM-4 (generic!).

yeah don't think this will be as big as LOTR, for one the 3 lotr original starter sets all were like 75 dollars each (even the mines of moria one didn't go above 100, least when lotr was still played, probably shot up by the end, not that I ever looked)
this one is more then double that, 150 dollars is a fair chunk of change, especially for lord of the rings, the least popular game and one that goes away after the movies stop
hey I'd love to see a silmallarion (sp?) bunch of models... but who knows if that will ever happen
or maybe some of tolkien's other stuff like the father christmas letters lol

I don't think the hobbit movies are as big of a deal in the cinema or the Lord of the Rings communities as the original Lord of the Rings trilogy was. For this reason I don't see a hobbit "bubble" forming nearly as big as the LOTR one was.

the hobbit did have a lot less to it and wasn't nearly as grand as lotr
if the prices for the hobbit were like the ones at lotr's time, then i think it would be doing well, since that was always lotr's appeal- good prices, low model count, you could have lots of armies and not feel wholly bad and get them painted in a decent amount of time
that and it was lord of the rings, fluff GW could not touch, no matter how hard they wanted to

Yes, I am glad to see Mantic forging their own path, even if I don't love every creative decision they make these days. At least they've figured out that they need to have a draw besides "budget wargame", although I think it's important they keep some cheap troops for the easy not- GW sales.
Still, Reaper is definitely the kind of company that revels in "The Gobbit: There and Here Again"-style sales. They have a lot of great, unique stuff, but they are also firmly established as the Walgreens generic brand of gaming miniatures.
And AoW needs to do anything they can just to get customer good will indiegogo fallout damage control noticed again.

It's all about the price and, to me, the models. I'd even consider buying the starter if it was 75$ as I absolutely love LOTR but at 150$...no thanks!
Furthermore, the goblins look terrible and are, to me, far inferior to the old Moria goblins.

I have to say, after seeing the movie, I now want some of the models. I am giving them a second look for what may be fun to paint.
I enjoyed the trolls and may get those models if they look good in person.

If you look into reaper's catalog, I think you'll already find appropriate miniatures for all, or nearly all your tolkien needs. In fact they probably had them long before GW entered the LOTR arena.
A bit unfair to call them the "Walgreens" brand though. Sure they are as ubiquitous as Walgreens, but they certainly have a higher reputation for quality. They hire the best sculptors and have some of the best sculpts out there. The only reason some of their sculpts get slagged a bit is that you can still order even their oldest sculpts from a catalog stretching back two decades!

That's not really a bad thing though. Having a miniature company that makes "generic everything" is good for everyone.

Mat Ward was the main writer on the original LotR games. Priestley or Alessio wrote the game design, but Ward did all the fluff, then stepped in to the rules somewhere around RotK, iirc. He was writer for the version they put out after the movies, and War of the Ring.
Also, the LotR box sets were $40 when introduced. Fantastic value then, and were still decent value when they crept up to $60.

yes but its still lord of the rings, there is a point where they can't go any more and make the universe insane
(yeah i know he wrote wotr, and it sucked)
lotr for the longest time was a fantastic buy, simple rules for beginners, it was the gateway game
now... they treat it like 40k and fantasy, when the models are much lesser in quality and you generally get less in a box

WotR is an excellent game system. Some of the lists are a bit off, but what do you expect from a 1st edition? The mechanics of the game are far superior, IMO, to WHFB.

Exalted as hard as I can. WotR has an amazing set of rules and is VASTLY superior to WHFB that is now a 90% luck dependant mess. WotR is easy to pick up, the 1st / 2nd generation models look awesome (the new ones aka the ones GW just thought of themselves suck) and it makes for short, but very enjoyable games. Plus: getting an army is very cheap due to ebay pretty much being stuffed with cheap LOTR miniatures.
