Hails to all that read this. Anyone that has known me on Dakka for any amount of time knows that the majority of my efforts are focused on specifically themed projects (Death Guard, Terrain, etc) and when I am working on a project it appears that is all I am doing. That is generally true, but there are exceptions.
I have a number of miscellaneous projects that have traditionally filled the 'down time' that occurs when glue or GS is setting, I'm stumped what to do next, or do not have enough time to commit to my main project. I've been thinking about this for a while, and finally decided to display some of the random distractions that do not fit into my standard categories. This will include things ranging from my WFB stuff and Gorkamorka to sharing the contents of my bitz boxes and sharing WIP of projects I have slotted for completion in the far (far) future.
My first offering are models I picked up in 1997. They were originally used as Khorne Berzerkers by a friend of mine that gave them to me when he moved on to another army. I used them as Red Corsairs in 2nd Ed and I had a lot of fun w/ them (even converted a Huron Blackheart model to lead them). I recently found them at the bottom of a random junk bin that somehow managed to escape my massive re-org in March '12, and they were heavily damaged, so I decided to bring them back to their former glory. It turned out to be more work than I had anticipated and due to missing bitz I would up having to do some conversions and some minor painting. I made sure to use bits from the RT / 2nd Ed period that would have been available to me back in the day (except for a couple chain axes I added for the 'cool' factor). There are still some models left to be repaird, but here's what I've finished:
There's still work I need to do (like changing the bases to my new 'grimdark blasted ash waste' look and I'll likely share that when it is done. Most importantly I'm glad that I brought these up to a playable status / standard and I'm looking forward to seeing them on my table again.
This is just a sample of what I'm going to be sharing over time. That said, this thread is still my distraction, my 'break' from my primary projects, so I'll be here randomly but I expect to updtae at least once a month or so.
That's it for now. Thanks for stopping by, and know that there is much more to come.

Here's a project that I've been working on for quite a while and have recently decided to step up with the building of a new Chaos Lord w/ mk of Khorne. The other Champions were around a long time before the Lord, maybe by a year or more. They were originally made for my Death Guard but I changed my mind, swapped the heads, and started a project I'll be sharing here later.
Everything you see is magnetized and swappable w/ any of my Champions:
I'm really enjoying this side project and expect to do the same when it comes to Special Weapons and maybe even Heavy Weapons.

I'm supposed to be working on the Lord / Juggenaught, getting distracted by the Khorne DP and the Aspiring Champion that seem to be tagging along. The DP is a combination of parts, specifically a Rogue Trader Bloodthirster head and 2nd Ed Daemon Prince body. The mace is the Cursed Mace, really sick stats in the Chaos Codex. Have had this model (minus recent conversions) since the mid '90's and it's cool to see it coming together. I'm liking the idea of running a Khornate army right now. I'll probably change my mind later, but whatever. The Aspiring Champion happened simply because I pierced together a few broken bitz of a couple models and now I have a new Champion. I'm not going to magnetize this one, it's good 'as is' and can pull double duty simply as a Berzerker instead of a Champion.
That's it for tonight. Time for bed.

Hey Skalk!
It's been a long time until I could spend a decent time browsing the P&M blogs section and, what do I find? A side project thread?
This proves you're more focused on your main projects than I've ever been (since every side project I start usually grow out of control )
Like your Cultists thread, this one reminds me of the time my best firend and I used to build as many models as prossible from his incredibly old and tasty bitz box (eatin kebab, drinking beer and watching stargate SG-1 -which is my best definition of a good evening )
I really like the mounted lord, did you build a saddle for the berserker?

@ Joe- Congrads on finding this. I decided to not advertize it to my Dakka buds, it's really just a collage of whatever distracts me at the moment and if anyone likes what I'm doing they are free to comment. I'm not looking to make this a 400 page thread.
I totally get what you mean by a side project becoming the main focus. I'm trying to make sure I stick w/ my Terrain, but honestly after the last piece I did I have no idea how to follow that, plus there is a bit of expectation created that I start using my airbrush and I'm not really feeling ready to tackle that. I know that once start using it I'll pick up the techniques quickly and it'll be an awesome tool to use. I'll get to it eventually.
Right now my 'distraction' is intentionally my main focus, mostly due to Hero Competition that cormadepanda is running. I did fashion a saddle, but it's nothing to be impressed with. Basically it's just GS that fills in the gaps between the actual saddle that came on the Juggernaught and the Chaos Lord's butt. Functional, but not worthy of sharing specifically.
I'm also doing this for the factor my buddy Feldenglas will experience the next time we play. He doesn't have any idea that I'm working on this and aside for being a well-painted model, it's going to be a brutal powerhouse on the board. It has a few tactical drawbacks, but it also has incredible potential to crush all that stands before it.
And now that someone actually replied to this thread I have to find a new separator for the 'response' and the 'update'. Hmm.
That's good enough I suppose.
Anyway, I just got back from a 4 day vacation. We always take off for a few days every January to break up the 'blah' of winter. We never go too far, 3 or 4 hrs drive at most. Our destination always includes a pool and hot tub / jacuzzi... and this:
I have to say the hotel we stayed at this year sucked and I wouldn't go back to that specific one again, but the pool and jacuzzi were decent enough and I got a lot of work done for the contest (most of it after everyone else was asleep, of course). Here's a series of WIP as got work done on the model over the last few days. I know it's not going to win and I have no misgivings about even placing in the contest but I will have the satisfaction of knowing I have a well-converted and fully painted Chaos Lord completely finished and ready to lead my armies to whatever fate awaits them.
Overall I'm happy how this is turning out and I'm looking forward to finishing it in a another week or so.

@ GiraffeX- BLOOD FOR THE BLoo... huh? Sorry, got distracted.
I've been busy messing around w/ a new CSM force that I don't need. I've been thinking on this more and more lately- I have too much stuff. But whatever. here's my most recent side project that doesn't fit in anywhere else.
MAGNETIZING 2ND ED METAL TERMINATORS
This was a 'rainy day afternoon' project I worked on when I was sick of working on terrain. I've been putting together a neutral CSM force and decided they needed some really expensive guys that would scatter horribly when they teleported and get shot at a lot when they were on the ground.
Keeping with my most recent trend, I decided to go w/ 100% magnetization. Here's how I made it happen. First I chose the models and weapons:
..drilled the Terminators
..and put magnets on everything:
I really slacked on instructions, like drill bit I used / magnets I used, etc. If anyone really wants to know let me know and I'll be more technical.
Fun project, will do again with something else no doubt.
Thanks for looking.

@ Llamahead- I've been collecting 2nd Ed metal again. Not sure why, I already have too many CSM as it is. Maybe someday I'll play a 14th Crusade APOC.
@ monkeytroll- Yes. That exactly.
Ok. This next set of pics was actually a primary project for a couple days as I needed to WYSIWYG my 1,500 Undivided force for the campaign I am playing in. The people reading this thread so far will appreciate it for sure. The only things not RT are the Dreadnoughts, Havoc ML, and Warpsmith. I miss the RT / 2nd Ed days but I know I am living in the Golden Age of Chaos right now because I have access to what once was and what is current at the same time. Kind of like Metal. I can listen to Bolt Thrower from 20+ years ago, but I can also listen to the new Cannibal Corpse album. Whooo!
The majority of this is not finished. The models w/ the Goblin Green bases are from 1995 when I first started building this force. The Land Raider needs some touching up, and everything else needs detail.
Here's the entire army. It's quite brutal. I can explain the makeup and purpose of the army later if anyone is interested.
HQ-
First Squad -
Second Squad-
Third Squad-
Dedicated Transports-
Elites-
Heavy Support-
Total 1496 pts
And for you Purists out there that think I have ruined my Rhinos or Land Raider w/ new attachments, surprise. It's all magnatized so I can remove / replace as needed. The past is as it ever was, just some hidden upgrades.
That's it for now. Back later w/ more Dreadnought fun.

@ Monkey- I will. Thanks.
inmygravenimage is running a 're-purposed' contest and I decided I wanted in so here's my most recent work on something that isn't terrain, and will have a specific and functional purpose in my Chaos army as a Demagogue of Nurgle.
Here are the raw bitz before I got started. I didn't wind up using everything in this picture, and I used things that aren't in this picture, so I'll explain them as a I go along.
I wanted to build a models that had absolutely no GW bitz in it at all, not even the base. So, the base if from Warzone miniatures, the chain is just a regular chain necklace, the skull pad arm is from a company I cannot remember, the back pack is from another company I cannot remember, as are the blue legs and tentacled metal body. The cloak is a Ral Partha bit from an Elven archer set. I didn't use the black model or the bar in the middle for anything.
I'll tell you straight off that I've become very used to modeling with plastic and didn't know how good I had it until I started the conversions. It has been a long, long time since I have worked w/ metal. Scraping of the icons was a lot of fun.
...that's sarcasm, btw.
Cloak being prepped to become a loincloth:
Arm being repositioned:
Front and back side of 'Power Armor' for a torso. I made it out of a backpack (top) from the same set the tentacle-armed model in the first pic.
Side by side comparison w/ a standard Chaos Space Marine. The Demagogue is not significantly larger and won't stand out on the table for the wrong reasons.
And here's the total for my evening. I have to pin this one so I don't spend every game gluing it back together. New stuff in this pic. The detached arm is a Power Maul conversion I made from a Power Sword arm from the same model as the blue legs and a Grenade Launcher from Demon Forge. The Bolter in the right arm is also Demon Forge. A little GS to bulk the model up for some Nurgle goodness finishes up the night.
I don't have a lot of time to finish this project so I'm going to be jamming right through. Stay tuned, more coming very soon.

@ Galorn- Thanks! I really like the original plastics as well. Not as versatile as the new ones but definitely have a special feel about them and are easy enough to convert into whatever weapons you need.
@ Theophony- Thank you. I'm hoping to have this finished very soon.
My WIP looks pretty hacked together right now, but that is going to change quickly. By the time I'm done it will be par with my regular plastic conversions and I expect to have no less than 9 different manufacturers donating bitz to this model. Likely no real work on it this weekend as I have a few responsibles to tend to, but I've got enough time to finish this up.
The other really cool part of this is all the bitz I have used so far were highly unlikely to ever be used for anything, just more junk taking up storage space.
I'm glad I found out about this contest. It has renewed my passion for modeling and I have to say I've missed that feeling a lot.
