No?

Never done OSL. While it can be done with the old fuzzy stick, it’s really better served by airbrushes. Or people who mix paints on pallets. Or have skills. So not really my thing. Best I could do would be drybrush a little white around there. Maybe follow with a green wash.

If you open your third eye and view him with warpsight, that hand does have some amazing effects going on. Trust me.

Edit:
Handles clear, everyone onto the base/decal stage. Which is good, as I’m not sure how good I’m going to be for detail work. Catching up with years of dental neglect is not a very fun process. Turned down the hard drugs, so we’ll see how well ibuprofen works. So far, so good, and the procedure was ~6 hours ago. Might be a grumpy few days.

Still need to decide what to do next. Might just bring down 5 nids and have at. Even if I decide to do something else, they can be done in clear in a day if I put my mind to it. Open to suggestions as always.

Edit2: Put the fist blue down on 3 metal terminators (not necrons, TDA vets) and the Indominous Lt.

Interesting that you paint up more than one army at a time. I find that confusing. Perhaps because I tend to paint a different way for each project.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

While the colors change, a lot of the techniques are the same. Barring the ‘nids. Mixing things up helps keep things fresh. It helps that I’m pretty set in the ways I paint things, so I only occasionally need to reference back how I did something. I will do things like grab finished models to visit the bench to remind me. Just took two seers down and back to help with the new guy.

Put the last layer of glue on the sisters, they are ready to join their squad once that dries. Flock is down on the marines. Just the decals left on the infiltrators. And glamor shots for the Masterminds. I’ll probably hold off on the formal pics until I’m done with the decals, as those two are the last of their squad.

Just a photo from the bench, proving that I’m still at it. Alpha and Omega. The first and the last. Stupidly old terminators alongside the latest hotness. You know pic like this is why you show up to this thread.

You ain't lyin'. Those old boys look like they aim to give the show-off freshman a good kicking. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the sprue. Is that head for LT a standard option or a swap? I know I plan to use something other than the stock head, too.

He got a headswap and the iron halo snipped off.

The old guys love to give the newbs a good hazing. Especially the Lts.

Wanders over to google translate, pops in latin. Gore Man = Caedes Vir. <updates crusade roster>

Right now I’m just using the power sword Lt from the DI box for my crusade Lt, but once I get the new guy painted up I’m spending the requisition point to rearm and reequip him to the Indominus one. And now he has a better name. He might always be a , but he will die well. Actually kind of fitting. I gave him the Adept of the Codex WL trait, and the Vox for extra aura distance. He’s the by-the-book Lt. running things by the numbers, while the Smash Captain is off dealing with big threats. And as a fenzion injector is on the good captain's list of things to get, it’s not a bad thing to have someone responsible to keep the backfield organized.

So broke out the lightbox.

The other bare headed guy can serve as a sarge if I want to field them as 2x5 units, or a coms guy if I want to try that out.

Formal shots of the phobos HQs. I will probably add squiggles to the purity seals with the new decals, but that’s another day’s project.

This month’s entry. My old armies sensing the new shadow in the warp and ganging up against them. Poor Nids.
And that’s the half year folks, time for the collage:

Masterminds looking awesome. The little flecks of snow on the Librarian's coat sell that look. Nice recap, too. The Emperor would be proud. Except for that pesky Seer...

Huh. I didn’t actually notice that the half year was almost entirely Imperial, with the seer there as an AoC for the fight vs. the Nids. The Deathwatch, camo, and SoB broke up the sea of blue enough that it did’t register. Also the composition of the YTD shelf is a bit different then the comp pic. I know I’ve painted a chunk of non-imperial stuff.

Not that the comp is going to stay Imperial. Next month is The Long War, and I’m going to do the wraithblades next. October is going to be dead things, unless I decide to shift gears and do some horror from beyond the outer black. We’ll see what the poll says for November, and I might use December to patch any holes in my annual goal list.

Cleaned up 3 ripper swarms this morning, working on the big bug.

Decided I didn’t feel like magnetizing. Head looked like it was going to be a lot of un-fun to do. I’m OK with a little counts-as. So I just built it with the parts I thought looked best, which ended up as just the basic Trygon. I suspect it will take the field as the prime version, but I didn’t like all the extra fiddly bits.

I’m a little worried that the contrast paint won’t scale up to the larger model well. Pooling on flat surfaces, not enough on the edge, etc. Only one way to find out. Worst case, I do some edging and touch ups.

At least they are not Tau.

So another combat patrol crusade game last weekend:

Supply Drop.

I ended up tabeling him on the top of 5, but only won the game by 5 points. Dice were all over the place on both sides. His captain ate fire from my entire list for a turn and took one wound. The following round he copped a krack missile to the face on overwatch and died. (In fairness, I used the UM strat for multiple unit overwatch, so he was eating it from the Lt, Pred, and the speeder). Speeder racked up two kills, (and the reaper agenda) while the KT and the HG each claimed a unit. Nobody on my side leveled up, but his captain did, and he’s getting a LOT meaner. He’s using the gear for the Indominus captain, with the +2T Salamander WL trait, and the burning blade. Just picked up the Crusade relic bionics, for +1S and a 5+++. So he’s hitting at S8 -5ap, 2D, at T6, 2+/4++/5+++ (with a 4+ vs. MW). With salamander re-rolls. Ouch. I feel a little less bad taking a smash captain (who I intentionally had sit out this run to give him a chance to catch up a little)

That was just cruel and unusual punishment and denied his Captain a heroic moment.

In my defense, at the time he was up 5 points, and I needed to kill his captain, or he was going to butcher my Lt. and probably carve a chunk of wounds off my Pred. Which would have left me with the speeder with one wound left, the two HG (one of which was down 2/3 wounds) and 3/5ths of the KT. While I killed his bikes early, his dreadnought was still at full strenght, and a VERY nasty piece of work at this point level. All the fire his captain tanked on my turn really needed to to be spread across multiple targets.

I’m all for letting non load-bearing things go down in the cinematic fashion, and give little moments to shine. But I’m not softballing games, or letting him win. This was a case where if I didn’t pull this off, he probably would have won. On small tables, having two CC monsters rolling around is not something I can allow and retain a chance of winning. And honestly, his captain was on borrowed time. I should have killed him on my turn, but the dice had other ideas. Left unchecked his captain was going to kill my LT and Pred, his dread the KT and the HG, and a stiff breeze the LS.

And teaching him the importance of stratagems is a good thing. He knows there are cool ones out there (like the stand back up after being killed one he could have used here). But he keeps forgetting to use them. He’s a lot more solid about his re-rolls. Which goes a long way.

Game sounds fun (and good to see the Mordheim terrain in use ), especially that it was still close despite him losing more units. That bodes well once me and my friends start playing because one seldom plays the mission but wants to cause maximum mayhem. So I can just concentrate on scoring

Keeping an eye on the objectives and playing the mission is how I win a lot of my games. Ultras have very rarely been competitive, and even when they have been, I rarely have the “hot” units that let them crush. Solid, dependable, focused. Keep your eye on what needs to be done to active victory, and seize it.

Some paint progress:

I’d like to finish up the terminators and get them off the handles so I can get to work on this month’s challenge. Which are the wraithblades. If I can’t finish them this weekend, they are just going to take a time out and I’ll swap projects. Lt. I doubt will be finished that quick, but we will see. I’d actually like to get him done so I can field him with my crusade.

Work is going to be ugly for today and tomorrow, so we’ll see how much motivation I have. Weekend might have plans as well. Depending on if parts arrive, I might be helping The Boy assemble a computer.

Hang tight people, Weekend is in sight!

I’m not expecting a lot out of these guys competition wise. Just my normal “not last” and more minis out of the Pile of Shame and onto the table.

Speaking of which: floorhammer is dead. Long live tablehammer! Needed to hit Home Despot for more primer (hope I got the right can) and while I was there grabbed a pair of 6’ x 2.5’ tables. Might need to jigger some storage space for them, which shouldn’t be hard. Ironic that I got them to save my knees/back, be feel like I almost killed myself dragging them up the 3 flights of stairs. Resting now.

Don’t get old kids; it’s a trap!

Lovely weather this weekend, which means it’s time to prime. Normally around this time of year I take stock and see if I need to ramp up production to make sure I can last the winter. Will not be an issue. Running out of space to put stuff in the primed pile.

Terminators are ready for their second blue coat, almost there. Lt. is almost done with his basecoats. Chugging along.

Enjoy your weekends all.

Ready for flock and decals. I also grabbed the rest of the old terminators off the shelf for decal work, as only a half dozen of them had their chapter markings. Still a bit before I have more vets then a company has brothers. 20 old terminators, 10 30k era ones, 20 sternguard, 10 vanguard. The new bladeguard vets and a few old RT vets might push me to 2/3s of the 1st.

Also fun fact, when pulling the minis off the shelf I noticed that one of them is still undergoing his qualifications for TDA. Probably need to log a certain number of missions before they grant the Crux.

Lt. should be done with his basecoats. On to the washes and drybrushing. Would like to get him done today.

Edit:
Lt should be just about done with paint. Will go over him with fresh eyes tomorrow, and start on the base and decal.

Put the black on his base this morning and glued the rocks/tufts down. Might flock over lunch, we’ll see.

He’ll bring me up to 5 painted Lts. Him, 2 other primaris from the DI box, the JP one I build, and the long serving RT metal. In the wings is the phobos one from the SC box, who is primed and waiting paint. 2 per company, so about a quarter of the way to what I need. Not that I let little things like the Codex Astartes limit me on how many captains I have in my collection (11 painted, 4 primed)

With the paint station clear, the wraithblades are up and good to go. I’ll start slapping paint on them soonish.

And while no dreadsock, I know which side I’d bet on in a cage match. Old metal will beat fresh plastic every day.

Stats wise I think it would actually be an interesting fight. Pretty close matchup.

Last 3 done.
The guy on the right exchanged bolters with a member of the Deathwing after a joint operation.

And hold on to your socks, heavy metal about to drop:

Put the decals on all the troops. Like an idiot, I forgot the HQs. They will get theirs some day. 4 squads, all sorts of different vintages in there, even as full metal.

5 assaults, 2xTwin claws, 3x TH/SS, including the sarge.
5 tactical, AsC, 1 chainfist
5 tactical, AsC, 2 chainfists
5 tactical, HF, 1 chainfist.
(one of the SB/powerfist guys has a magnet to take a CML)

Lib w/ SB/axe, Chap w/ SB/Croz, Capt. w/ SB, fist w/GL, maybe a sword, depending on the era.

Pic I took of the new LT was out of focus, he’ll get glamor shots next time the light box is out.

Love me some Terminators, all the better that they are the original. They look great together just don't put your back out lifting them all up. Back in the day would this have been a 2000+ point army?

Back in 2nd, probably more than 2k. But I’m not going to dig out my old books to get an exact number. Plus I don’t have the UM book, just the SW and AoD ones. With the price cuts in 3rd, I think they would be more like a 1,000 point force with the HQs.

Started painting the wraithblades. Hopefully they won’t take too much time, not a particularly complicated scheme on these guys.

Quick game yesterday. Last of the 25 PL crusade missions.

Both our dice were pretty cold. Ended up being a draw, where I was tabled on the bottom of 5, while his mangled razorback and 1 wound left captain staggered off the field. If I felt like being a RAW guy, it would have been a win for me, as I could have claimed the painted points. I let him know this was his warning, I’d do it next time. I don’t expect fully painted, but if he has at least one more model painted then last time, I’ll call that fair.

Fresh paint was my Lt. Rearmed and requiped to Indominus standards. Mostly just doing the aura thing, but snapped off a few shots with his pistol (saved) and went for an end game tangle with the Salamander captain of doom. Was a bit outmatched, but actually would have put him down if not for the 5+++ from the crusade bionics. Ended up taking one too many hits from the burning blade on the last turn of the game.

Also new was the table. One of two purchased. Conveniently 30” wide, so just a matter of marking off the 44” length for the recommended battlefield. Much better then the floor.

On the painting front got the first red down on the wraithblades and the hafts of the axes. Still a few more basecoats to go.

Watched the SM reveal yesterday. Not really impressed, but some nice stuff. Not feeling the speeder. It’s just too big, clunky, and covered with guns. I’ll wait for the new grav tank to drop. Which is also big, clunky, and covered with guns, but is not claiming to be some light agile scout unit.

Nothing wrong practically with the heavy intercessors. They look fine, decent stats. Did not need to exists, bloat for the bloat god. My first thought was “I’m OK passing on these guys” but as I write this and think about getting the numbers for a battle company on the shelf, I’d rather have a squad of these guys instead of intercessor squad #5. So will eventually probably pick up a box.

New captain is a pass. I’ve got the gravis from the DI box. Not seeing what this guy brings to the table that I can’t get elsewhere. And as they are probably going to be asking $35+ for him, not worth the hobby budget. Not that I wouldn’t paint one up if he came in a bundle box, just not going out of my way to get him.

Do I need the full boxes for Eradicators and Bladeguard? I’m thinking “No”. The ability to add a MM to the melta squad seems like a good option, but as they are going to be focus firing overkill levels anyway, seems a bit much. Of course, when 2/3s of the squad is dead, leaving the MM gunner alive and double-tapping molten death, that’s something. But probably not enough to get me to pick up another box. Bladeguard look really nice. How many choppy guys on foot do I need? A box might be picked up to make the powerfist/plasma pistol captain. We’ll see what the sprues look like.

Assault intercessors is at least one box. Nice looking guys. Take half to fill out the monopose from the starter, half to make autobolter intercessors. The mention of the CC options is heartening, and I’ll go back and sink some magnets into the ones I’ve already built.

I’ve got enough stuff stocked to keep me painting for a while, so no rush on any of this. I’ll grab the codex first, and take my time to read and digest it. See if anything leaps out as a must have. Probably grab one box of all three flavors of intercessors. But hopefully we get some tease of what’s coming in the December mega box before I start picking stuff up.

Obviously this can/will change with the new codex, but a roadmap to the primaris battle company.
Spoiler:

Key:
U -- Undecided
N – Need to buy
b – Bought
B – Built
P – Primed
F -- Finished

Command elements
Captain (F)
Chaplain (P)
Lt’s 2x (FF)

Battle line units:
Squad 1 - Intercessors w/ bolt rifles, power sword sarge (Fx5, Nx5)
Squad 2 - Intercessors w/ bolt rifles, power fist sarge (Fx5, Nx5)
Squad 3 - Intercessors w/ Autobolt rifle, TH sarge. (Nx10)
Squad 4 - Intercessors w/ Stalker rifles, chainsword sarge. (Nx10)
Squad 5 – Heavy Intercessors w/?? (Nx10)
Squad 6 – Kill Teams (Fx5, Ux5)

Close Support:
3 incursors – (3xF)
3 bikes - (P)
10 assault Intercessors (Px5, bx5)
** Need another 4 marines** (Ux4)

Fire Support (HS)
2x5 Hellblasters (Px5, Fx5)
3 Suppressors – (Px3)
3 Aggressors- (Px3)
3 Melta gravis guys (Px3)

There will probably be some re-jiggering of the bolt rifle squads and the KT squad. Might take the spare bodies from one of the completed 5 man squads to fill out the back of another one to make more room for specialists. Plenty of time to build and shuffle guys around.
