Scroll up and read Nev talking about when he was painting RTB01 beakie marines. If you've been collecting them for that long, all sense of 'complete collections' must be gone: there is only the path

When is the 11th starter due to drop? Do we know anything about it? I might have to go and have a sneak in the previews subforum...

Your librarian headswap is very nice - I wouldn't have even realised had you not said.

It's expected in about a year, but no actual date has been given. The general concession is that 11th will be a soft reset, rules wise, as 10th had many changes. Although, space marines are in an odd position, as it is expect that all the First Born and possibly many older vehicles will be going to legends.

There was also some talk about going back to a 4 year cycle, do to their being more “core” games, but I suspect that may just be wishful thinking.

I was just thinking this morning about when did we start getting solid info on 10th? IIRC official news wasn’t until later, but I think we had more solid info before that. Where are the potato cam photos? I’d like to know what’s in the box before I finish my company. If we see a return of the Tactical as the core battleline unit, a lot will change.

Luckily I can spend time on secondary armies while I wait.

One problem with playing marines is that they release new stuff faster then I can collect and paint it. So every edition it’s “What does my collection need to function?” and “What new shiny models do I want?” Sometimes they morph into more solid goals, like “Time to get that second battle company done” Other times are smaller projects, like needing sarges equipped with something better then bolt pistols/chainswords. I add models to the collection, and pull units from it to make lists. There is no end. As long as I’m still enjoying myself. That said, once I finish the company, I suspect I’ll go more into a maintenance mode. Grinding out intercessors can get tiring.

Building the victrix guard a little on my morning break. The champ has 2 options for his left sword arm. Flipping ahead, the banner has the option for the same 2 parts. So if building both, the one you don’t use on one will need to be used on the other. Not gluing it on until I get the ancient to the same point so I can see who looks better with each.

Just a head’s up for other Ultras digging into the kit.

Edit:
Risked a prime in the garage for the reivers and last KT guy. Looks like it went on clean.

2 down. One more to go. The question is where to? At what point do I step off the path and start kitbashing? The thought was to spice up some BGVs to fill out the back of the squad. But do I also want to make a count-as Cato? Because using the last Victrix body as a base for him would be the way to go. Also thinking about building another Lt.

I’ve got 6 BGV on sprue. 5 built. So one of them needs to fill out a squad now that they only come in 3s. 5 left. If I use 4 to fill out the VHG, I can use the last Victrix body for cato, and the last BGV to make a LT.

Should be doable.

That thing is beautiful but it does feel a little over the top even by 40k standards!

Can't wait to see those Kitbash!

What bugs me is the tyranid. Heh. Ironic. This is the chapter banner. In the 10k years the Ultras have been fighting, how many of them have been vs. the nids? Only the last few centuries. Genestealers have been around a bit longer, but were a minor threat from the moons of yrmgle until the larger nid thread showed up. Hardly worth the space on the Big Banner. I get that there are a bunch of banners, but this one seems very specific for it’s inclusion for the Victrix Ancient. But that’s just my headcannon talking. When I did my Banner of Mcragge before I went more basic. Something you might see flying in anywhere from the start of the grand crusade up until the present day.
--
So some test builds:

Captain of the Victrix Guard. A position currently held by Cato Sicarius.
Spoiler:

Official mini:

My prior firstborn counts-as:

So the wargear needed is a fancy sword and a masterwork plasma pistol. Not hard to source. Right now the cape is glued on, but the arms, head, and backpack are still testing.

I might be able to get another plasma pistol/arm, but that one works. It’s not the focus of the mini, and gets the job done. Down and to the side, while the focus is on the sword.
Sword is from the new UM upgrade sprue. The angle is not 100% where I like it. I could cut at the wrist and swivel up to give it a more held aloft pose. Right now he’s advancing at a ready stance.
Backpack two choices. A BGV one with the iron halo suitable for a captain (I cut those off on the actual BGVs; officers only) or a back banner. I have a few choices for the banner itself. More irritating to paint and play with, more more in line with the character.
The transverse crest is very iconic to Cato. Not my favorite, but it helps lock in the counts-as. Head with laurals from the UM sprue to show how he’d look without a helmet. Helmetless helps reinforce the fact that he’s special, and not just a normal guy in the squad.

Thoughts and opinions? Not going to glue things down until I mull over the options and get some feedback.

More edits:
I could probably put a transverse crest on a Victrix winged helm, but that would involve a little cutting. Still an option.

Victrix enough? One problem with the BGV as a base is that the swords are really built into the models. All the straps and belts want the scabbard hanging on the hip. Now the Victrix don’t specifically call out for using an axe, but it’s the CC weapon of choice in the kit. Although the two epic heroes use swords. One reason I chose the active shooting pose. If things get messy, he might just swap the bolter out and go axe and blade.

One other issue with the swords is that they clip with the capes. I think those could work if I need to make another HQ using a interccesor as a base though. To the bits box for now.

From a WYSWYG POV the BGVs also have grenades and pistols. This body took well to removing the pistol, IIRC the others less so. Grenades have always been a soft ignore on WYSWYG anyway...

I probably have more beakies in my army then some Raven Guard players. Always room for more.

The Victrix have their own thing going on with their helms. Maybe for the BGV.

I should check my primaris sternguard to make sure I have one in there for that Boltgun! shooter action.

Everyone should have the greatest Ultramarine ever (Malum Caedo) in their Sternguard forces.

So that’s the BGV kit built.

BGV sarge with plasma pistol (and whoops, forgot his shoulder pads, done more step) This adds the second sarge to the 5 I have, allowing 2x3 man squads.
Victrix Guard. To take the spot from the body I’m poaching for Cato.
Primaris Lt. Because everyone needs more! I’ve only got...5? Not nearly enough. All around build with a MW bolter, MW power sword, and a heavy bolt pistol.

And Cato.

(put the pads on the sarge as well)

That banner is BIG. I hadn't realised, but your picture puts the banner into context - got enough paint to cover that thing?

They are some really cool models - all the kit and bling.

The running joke is that there are enough primaris Lts to fill their own codex. I’ve just got 5 primaris painted (and 2 firstborn).

The two that came in the 8th starter, one sword, one rifle. Plain and underequipped by modern standards.
Phobos Lt, with a headswap. He seemed like he needed to be bald and yelling.
Volkite/SS Lt. from the indominus box. I feel like I need to go back and paint his trim white to join the 1st.
Combi Lt. from the Leviathan box.
(and a kitbashed jump Lt. and an old school RT Lt. from when marines still had officers besides captains.)

The new guy I just built will join the 3rd company replacing one of the two old ones for shelf deployment.

It’s real daunting. Not going to lie. I’m not a huge fan of sculpted banners with a ton of detail. I managed to muddle through with the Blood Knights, so will manage this somehow.

Always too many officers in 40K collections. My Eldar have six Farseers...as many Warlocks.

Cheers,

I think I have 9 seers? Some can be swapped between farseers and warlocks. Plus a pair of autarchs, old Avatar, and a PL. another seer almost done getting paint and another PL waiting.

That’s a bunch of characters, and my Eldar is a much smaller collection then my marines. I know at one point I did a percentage of FOC slot tally for my marines, and it had a hard skew towards HQs. I’d think my Eldar are the same, but would have to do the math.

Edit: forgot I’ve got another warlock primed. And farseer still on sprue.

I’ve been so focused on updateing the build side of the bench, forgot to update the paint.

This guy is done. Does not fit clean on the base, so going to need some more work. But that’s a project for another time.

He can join the rangers for the few snow based Eldar:

In more painting progress, the intercessors on the back of the bench that’s I’ve been chipping away at are getting their clean up blue pass. 2/5 done. After that will be the blue ink.

Tank has the black on the hull. Next up is the leadbelcher drybrush.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. And survived that and Black Friday. Especially any of you out there working retail.

Thanks!

So a progress pic. I really need to get cracking on these guys. I need to get them all done, plus 5 JP troops next month. And December is going to be short. Going AFK for over a week to visit my folks for the holidays. Plus I need to do holiday baking for my gaming group’s potluck/exchange which is next Friday.

In the home stretch most of my goals are fine. The 2 outstanding ones are the company progress and the tank. I’ve said before “If you make 100% of your goals, you are not setting them high enough” and there is a chance I’ll fail both of those. It might just be a partial squad of assault marines at the end of Dec. And the tank might not be finished, but should be in the mop up stage.

Next year I think might be the end of a few projects. Well, as end-y as things get around here, which is not at all. I’d like to try to finish the 3rd company by year’s end 2026. Earlier if possible. It would be cool to get them all on an army on parade board if they do that again in October. Similarly, I’d like to polish off the last of the nids. Of course, there is alway room for new models.

I think I’m also going to bring back the CP/Spearhead goal. I doubt I’ll get the Necron CP done before 11th drops, but getting that finished as a core to a new force would be good. I’ve also got my eye on the new soulblight one. Might pick that up after Christmas and have it be a winter build project. And if patterns hold, the 11th box will come with 2. Big assumption that GW is still on the 3 year cycle and we get 11th next June. Really want more solid info on that to help plan. but where is the FOMO in that?

Anyway, coffee is done, time to start my day. Stay warm out there!

So yeah, weekend was not that good. No real tank progress. At lunch today I got one of the intercessors done and ready to base. Another one is inked and ready for edgeing. Need to clean up blue, ink, and edge the rest. Going to start the jump troops on handles as they free up.

No advent this year, although i did about 2 years worth of work in 2025. Still, need time to gather more stuff so it’s not just a 1 year retrospective.

Happy December all. Stay warm. We are getting hammered with our first big storm tomorrow.

I didn't get much done this weekend either. I do try to have primed models at my computer/painting area at all times, so I can paint here and there while watching shows on the net.
As far as what's coming, I'm wondering if anything really big will drop with 500 Worlds and will it happen before Christmas to get those sales?

My computer is away from my paintbench these days. I used to have a printer stand next to my PC and would clean mold lines and build during loading screens and computer turns. Civ was real good for that. I don’t watch and paint at the same time. It’s either one or the other. Sometimes I will intersperse. Watch an episode, put down a color. Alternate as needed.

I honestly have no clue on what’s coming and when. If the pattern holds, the 500 worlds thing need to run 6 months or so until June-ish when we should get 11th. They going to drip out the releases they’ve announced over that time? Front load? How much new stuff they going to drop? Are there going to be big end of edition drops like a returning primarch?

I’d guess we are not going to see any more specific Ultras. Although it’s hard to tell what they are up to with those protest videos.

Just did the edgeing and glued the gun on marine number 2. He’ll need some touch ups once the glue sets, then off to base. Another is ready for ink. I figure if I can edge one a day, they will be done by the end of the week. And I can add Jump troops and catch them up as space clears. Sarge already has 2 colors down.

In other news, GW sent me a $15 voucher. So I ordered a box of heavy intercessors. Should be the last troops I need for the company. Still need another dread.

By pure headcount? Including legends and models without current rules? Over halfway.

I’d have to dig for my last tally, but IIRC I had over 500 marines.

That’s for boots on the ground. While I’ve got a decent selection of tanks and transports in the armory, it’s not nearly enough.

Organization wise, i’ve got just shy of 2 fleshed out battle companies. Firstborn is done, primaris getting close. Also, large chunks of the 1st and 10th, and enough spares on the swap shelf to fill up a lot of squads.

The secret is to start like 40+ years ago and just not stop. Even a dozen or two a year, it adds up.

And that’s not counting my other armies…

I was painted 270 guards in the past. But it's 15 years long period without breaks or other armies.
