It's official now:
http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/15/us/area-51-documents/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
(CNN) -- Area 51 has long been a topic of fascination for conspiracy theorists and paranormal enthusiasts, but newly released CIA documents officially acknowledge the site and suggest that the area served a far less remarkable purpose than many had supposed.
According to these reports, which include a map of the base's location in Nevada, Area 51 was merely a testing site for the government's U-2 and OXCART aerial surveillance programs. The U-2 program conducted surveillance around the world, including over the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Area 51, about 125 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is synonymous in popular culture with government secrecy, and many have theorized that it holds the answer to one of the greatest questions plaguing mankind: Are we really alone in the universe?
But the newly released documents make no mention of alien autopsy rooms or spaceship parking lots.
This information will be disappointing to some, who have come to view the area has been a mecca of sorts for alien encounters.
For these true believers, the existence of alien spacecraft at Area 51, and the government's attempts to cover up their trace, is irrefutable and has been since reports of Unidentified Flying Objects -- or UFOs -- began to emerge from the Nevada desert in the middle part of the 20th century.
The map and other documents were released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request submitted by Jeffrey T. Richelson, a senior fellow at the National Security Archives, in 2005.
Richelson submitted the request as part of his continuing study of aerial surveillance programs and told CNN that he was not given an explanation of why the new documents were less redacted than previous versions declassified by the agency.
He points out, however, that the location of Area 51 was not a particularly well-kept secret. Its location appears in books on aerial surveillance and is widely referenced in popular culture.
In fact, the map that was released in the CIA documents mirrors the one that appears after a simple Google Maps search for "Area 51."
Area 51 has also been referenced in government documents in the past, though this newest release is the first that acknowledges its existence and location in a purposeful way.
Richelson told CNN he believes this could signal a dramatic change in the government's willingness to declassify information about the famed base, meaning even more information could come out about Area 51 in the future.
The release of these reports seem to put the theories about aliens and flying saucers to rest for the time being, although they may not be enough to silence the true believers.
At least they still have Roswell, right?

I posted that comment before googling Area 52 to find out it's actually a real place that has a lot of declassified stuff going on, and a few classified but non-conspiracy-friendly things going on. So, that joke kinda fell flat, sorry.

Of course all the UFO believers are going to be convinced by this map that area 51 had no aliens. They don't think the government ever lies about what they find do they... The main point to remember is that map 51 on C&C Red Alert made weird things happen in game when you played it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Where's 1 - 49 for that matter?

Apparently Area 21-28 were erased when the Tauran Anti-Proton Accelerator went unstable in 1957 due to Rigelan saboteurs.
Or those particular area's got erased when the boundaries were redrawn sometime ago.

@ PredaKhaine. Of course not. To prove it I will personally come round to your IP address's location and take you on a tour of my work place. Please don't leave your location within the next 4.5 minutes. I will be wearing a black suite and charcoal grey tie. I will introduce myself as "John Smith", to which you will reply "That is a very normal name." I will be driving a black SUV.
Also, Area 23's science team was helping Area 21's team calibrate the flux capacitor lenses when the saboteurs struck, ergo that's why they to "were lost in an unfortunate rocket feul accident".

So, business as usual?
I do find this topic quite amusing. I do strongly believe that there is sentient life out there somewhere and they could very well be centuries ahead of us in everything, but how could say, a lightning strike/a radar guided missile/power line manage to bring down their vessels. Seeing as they will be capable of traveling the vast distances here by bending the laws of physics to their will IE their tech we can't even imagine right now. And what's their fascination with people living in trailers in the middle of nowhere who make sculptures out of recycled toilet paper? Why not abduct (and anally probe them of course...What's the deal with this?) someone from say, NASA? MIT?

This all looks like government propaganda to me. Are we really to believe that "the shadow government" had a sudden change of heart about Area 51 this soon after Snowden revealed a classified spying program? No. It's all part of the cover up. Remember, friends, "plausible deniability".

I thought they convicted him?
(either way I 100% disagree with it, considering he's got quite severe asperger's syndrome (I wouldn't say the US prison system is exactly an autism-friendly environment).
Also, in a 'not official statement' remark, one of the guys who heads up the NASA IT systems was quoted to say something along the lines of 'if I meet him in person, I'd shake his hand and thank him, by finding that security hole he saved us tens of thousands of dollars that a security consultant would have cost'
Everyone knew area 51 existed, it's pretty hard to hide an airbase. The thing with conspiracy theorists (in general, but using area 51 as an example) is that if they turn round and say 'yep, we've been fooling you all along, there are aliens at area 51, one of them is over there, say hi mr grey...' then they are right, and sit there all smug and self-righteous. However, if you say 'no there aren't any aliens here' then they will claim you're covering it up, so there are aliens there, you're just lying to everyone, so they still think they are right and sit there all smug and self-righteous. Prime example of the little-known but often-seen subspecies of humanity known to scientists as 'dorkus moronicus' if you ask me
Just thinking about it made me so angry I nearly threw my tinfoil hat across the faraday cage I've built around my house to keep out those snooping intelligence agency types

You can't really argue with conspiracy true believers. They frame their reality and construct their arguments such that they're going to be "right" no matter what you explain or show them.
Fortunately, these people tend to be a kind of human mole that you really don't encounter much in daylight and normal social situations.
