Who do people think would be the second best choice for warmaster? In their honest opinion?

in 30k? In 40K?

30K - Probably should have given the job to Johnson
40K - I'd vote to give it to High Marshal Helbrect

In 30k, the clear choice is Roboute Guilliman. I mean, c'mon - where other Primarchs may have found fame and glory on a single world, he CARVED OUT AN EMPIRE. One that's still intact and thriving 10,000 years on thanks to his own teachings.

40k, I would say Creed. Few others have the experience in marshalling insanely high numbers of troops as he does.

The clear choice was Sanguinus, Horus even says it himself.

Presently- probably Calgar, just cause he can handle all the stuff that goes with it. Not that other Chapter Masters couldn't but Ultramarine's are like half bureaucrat anyways.

I would think Guilliman would have been one of the top choices. Great leader and general who would have been able to wield the other primarchs and legions. From a "personable" or "likeable" standpoint, Sanguinius would have been another choice.

IIRC it was said that Guilliman was the other frontrunner beside Horus, while Sanguinius would have been the most accepted choice among the other primarchs.

Isn't the second best choice....already the one who was declared Warmaster?

The first pick is the Emperor himself.

Makes any candidate N°3.
To deal with the pencilpushers, its Gulliman. To lead them all as an angelic figurehead, its Sanguinius.

To keep the Imperium running until Daddy returns, its the Lion as he's the one available in M41. Maybe with some brothers to share the burden as none of them is perfect for that job.

40k - Grimnar

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."

Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? Grimnar can't be the Warmaster, he'd lose half the Imperium as soon as he was named to the position, in that the Inquisition won't support him. Dubious on the Ecclesiarchy as well, and if the Ecclesiarchy doesn't back you, you're pretty much done.

Of course, this does not take into account the Land Raider's worth of Plot Armor that keeps the Space Wolves existing in the 40K universe.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Well 13th black crusade speaks for him IMHO...

Also, you are right about Ecclesiarchy, but the "I" is all about politics (read : they will use anything if it serves their purpose)...

Grimnar as a IG favorite hero can be used without him even knowing who is controling him.....

30K Personally I think I would go with Johnson over anyone else. May e Dorn after that. I just don't really support Gulliman

40K- I think I would agree with Dante, he would seem like a very solid choice.

Ladies and gentlemen, the answer is really quite obvious. The only Primarch who should have ever been Warmaster is
Spoiler:

Leman Russ.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

30k - Guilliman, obviously.

40k - ... this is tricky. I don't see a "perfect" choice here, although a number of contenders for "next best thing":

- Calgar: An experienced warrior who comes from a Marine Chapter that has a history of producing good leaders. Not quite as suited for the job as the other options, but at the same time also has no strong points against him.
- Creed: An analytical mind who worked his way up from the bottom and has won the minds of the troops. On the other hand, he is kinda needed at Cadia.
- Dante: The Blood Angels are said to be viewed with suspicion by other Imperial forces and, like Calgar, he is a Space Marine rather than someone from the Imperial forces' core structure, but Dante has experience and already proven he can do a good job over Armageddon.
- Yarrick: Overall commander of the Armageddon warzone, did a good job running the central command council. Like Creed, however, he is still busy with his current task - hunting Orks.

What other experienced veteran leaders are around at the end of M41? Preferably non-Marines, of course, given the Imperium's current policy of keeping the Astartes away from too much influence.

lol. While I do LOVE Russ, I just don't see him doing too good of a warmaster. too battle hungry I think.

I can't believe people are choosing the Lion. A certain level of diplomacy is required in that position, and Jonson has been shown to be utterly terrible at reading people. He has he social graces of a Necron.

Guilliman is the clear choice.

Why the hell are some people picking Johnson ?

He was not even able to connect with his own legion and this guy should have been warmaster ?

You need Charisma Gravitas and likability for the position of warmaster Johnson only has Gravitas.

The choices are Guilliman or Sanguinus.

Sanguinius' nobility may have made him very likable and inspirational to his brothers (and everyone else for that matter), but he comes across as way too nice a guy to do a good job of running the Imperium.

The Warmaster still has to deal with regular humans, so you have to be well versed in deceit and double-dealing, something Sanguinius isn't capable of doing.

To be honest I wasn't even thinking of Vulkan. He would be a very good choice since out of all he Primarchs he's the one with the most compassion towards to regular humans.

Which are clear points against Johnston for warmaster.

Again Johnston is so emotionally stunted that he cannot even understand his own legionaries.

Johnston together with Kurze and Angron firmly belong on the
