I view this stuff much like how I view militant religious extremism. It exists because people with those ideas are LOSING, and so they thrash around wildly and loudly in the face of a world that's slowly but surely becoming more tolerant and leaving them behind.

In this specific case, the many people who shrugged and said "huh...the first Indian-American Miss America...that's nice" weren't motivated to pop off on Twitter about it.

I live in a part of town almost entirely populated by 20-something years old pseudo-artist girls from Toronto. My bet is that we won on the exchange.

Admittedly, they're all hipsters, but that doesn't matter much once your tongue deep into their mouth.

One would think that social conventions would dictate that no, if a woman is married she cannot compete in MISS USA... IIRC, dont they have a MRS USA competition out there? What a horrible idea if not.

Dunno what to say to something like this.

Visited a friend at his new place in Toronto, did not see a single "white guy" except him in the neighborhood. I swear 1/3rd of the population of Canada will be East Indian: they are the #1 immigrant. Get used to it, it is the "global village".

Care to name a city in India where 1/3rd of the population is white. It's hardly a global village if the only place you see this global village is in Western countries.

Anyway, there have been several brown and black Miss Americas so the only thing that seems to be going on here is that she used Indian culture rather than "American" culture in the show.

I saw this earlier today and whial I didnt write it I 100% agree.

"For the record, I don't watch the Miss America pageant and never have, because that kind of superficial fluff (with no offense at all intended to anyone who enjoys it—vive la différence) just isn't my cup of tea. But if I were one to watch the pageant, I'd like to think I'd be able to comport myself in a non-bigoted manner while objectifying women based solely on how their breasts look in a bikini and a low-cut gown"

I my own words "only two types of people care about this.
1: the (very vocal) 1.5% of the population that still hold membership with the KKK
2: Internet Trolls which, sadly, make up about 35% of the population."

Not to be pedantic, but there is a difference between Miss USA and Miss America... the former is a beauty contest that involves charitable works, and the latter is just a beauty contest...

There are two separate things.

Clearly overt institutional racism is over or there would never have been any non-white winners, however the Twitterstorm is an ugly public display of individual racism.

Yes, it scared the gak out of him.

In a similar case, the US deported a guy for some "joke" Twitter postings.

You mean where the guy tweeted that "he was coming to the United States to dig up the grave of Marilyn Monroe. Also the tweeter account of Mr. Bryan posted that he was coming to destroy America."

Of course he meant it as a joke. So did the guy who threatened to blow up the airport; he was acquitted on appeal.

That's the thing with jokes. You always have to be mindful of your target audience, especially when said audience decides if you get to enter a country or not

I never said that they were. I was talking about that specific instance that you raised, and the defense put forward that it was a joke.

The anti-Miss America people are displaying their ignorance and prejudice for the whole world to see
