I will play anyone who doesn't make me want to garrotte them with a tape measure within a minute of meeting them, and almost any list, FW /superheavies included.
My only caveat is that it must be actually possible for my list to be able to PLAY the flipping game. Not 5th ed daemons vs GK for example, or orks on the planet billiard ball vs ig artilleryspam so thick that the game is over before you get your turn. If I'm only there as target practise or another autowin for the WLD, I'm not interested.
Ideally a tightly fought game, with a fun and engaged opponent

I fully agree with your post. Being a bad painter is no excuse. Even a badly painted army is better than an army that is not painted at all. I would also have to ask: If you are a horrible painter of someone who hates painting, than why did you start a hobby that involves painting?

A seriously cheese army that's obviously made of cheese and covered in cheese. 3 Riptides, 4 helldrakes, etc. Its not fun and I play for fun. There has to at least be the illusion that I can win.

Exactly, I don't particularly enjoy painting but it needed to be done, and my skills developed to the point I became proud of my painted models, it's like sports, I don't really enjoy training for sports all the time but it is a part of it, so needs to be done and to the best of my abilities.
If you really hate painting and want to play though, go and pay someone to paint your models for you, and stop making any battle I'm involved in ugly.
On a gaming aspect, it becomes much easier to locate painted models in terms of special weapons etc as well from a distance.
Also, my first post is incredibly sexist, all genders can be lazy painters.

If someone is a cheater! I have played against jerks and power gamers, in most cases, I can have a good time if I adjust my expectations.
My biggest pet peeve is a player who techs their list against me. If you see me get out my green tide and you trade all your plasma for flamers, I won't be happy.
While I hate my own models being unpainted, some of my favorite opponents are poor painters and have mostly unpainted armies.

I won't play against painting elitests. My Nids are (mostly) painted to an acceptable tabletop standard, but if someone comments on the models that arent finished or says I need to practice more, I'll drop the game, shake their hand, and put my models up. After all, I'd hate to ruin their enjoyment of the game.

Most people say I play "suboptimal" lists. That doesn't seem to help them overcome it though.
Perhaps a different criterion would be better. Generalship matters.

To be fair, losing to Tau is exactly the same as losing to any other army. Telling me I beat you BECAUSE it's Tau is a great way to get me to beat you with Dark Eldar, or, well... any army you chooses. I somehow feel like people who dont like losing to Tau just dont like losing. Period.
What I usually do when someone says stuff like "I'll never play Tau" is I just take another army to show the essential truth of the matter: You're not losing to the codex, my friend.
Once they see that in YOU as the General, and that YOU are good, sometimes they soften up and see it as a chance to become better by playing someone good. Others just sulk. I own nine armies though just because of this phenomenon. I was told many times that the old 3rd/4th Edition Witch Hunters were "broken". And no... I'm not kidding. But then i played other armies and they came around and said "yeah, I guess the codex wasn't the issue". Course back then i'd play the wowafully underpowered Tau to make that statement. Now it's reversed. hehehe.

That's it for me. I like to play games that last longer than my drive to the LGS. If my opponent has resigned our game to another notch on the belt rather than an evening of poos and giggles, we may as well spare one another the time of setting up.
Now I'm not one of the guys who flat out refuses a game with Tau, regardless the circumstances, but honestly I'm not far from it. If it truly is a case of generalship, I'd much rather lose to Dark Eldar, Sisters or literally any other army you have with you because that game will almost certainly be a good bit more fluid/interesting. And no, losing to Tau isn't just like losing to anyone else. I can't think of any other army that was designed to be able to ignore the army's inherent weaknesses AND lack of tactical savvy. Even if I'm wrong, I haven't run into another list that does it outside of a tourney/super competitive enviornment. It's made all the more enfuriating because all this happens from behind a gunline. You can run IG as a horde or mech list, or eldar as a fire and maneuver. Both of which make for fun games and requires at least some iota if skill. Not Tau. They sit there and shoot you you to death before you can make CC or out shoot your shooting. MRB be damned.

Well I usually play against everyone, one game. The second game depends on the other being or not being a jerk, according to my own personal opinion of what a "jerk" is.
However, I refuse to play even a single game against some kind of players. Here is my black list:
1: young & attractive scantily dressed female players.
2: space marines players who wouldn´t admit their faction sucks.
3: Orlando Bloom
4: vampires, especially if they "sparkle".
5: the Dark Lord Cthulhu, if he is drunk.
6: anyone under 35 years old.
7: that stupid kid from the grocery. Damn you stupid kid! I hate you! I hope you DIE!!

personally I would probably play against anything except a WAAC player with one exception. Maybe its just because my local environment is pretty fair on this but if a player was unwilling to compromise. Simply enough there are some situations are sometimes up to interpretation. I would like to play a person who is willing to reach a intelligent conclusion with me. Not the kind of player who must have everything his way, insists he is right and will compromise.

I don't really care about what list you're playing or how painted the army is. What I do care about is the personality and attitude of my opponent.
I've had a few friends who don't take losing well. I'm not wild about playing with folks who essentially give up after one bad turn and spend the rest of the game alternately bitching or looking like they're visibly trying to keep from hurling models across the room every time a save fails.
There is a guy at my FLGS who seems completely unable to actually learnt the rules or his army, and takes upwards of 4-5 hours to play a (not terribly enjoyable) 1500 pt game.
Known cheaters, also not high on my list of desirable opponents.
So yeah. I'll play anyone once, then decide from there if I'll ever play them again.

In a club atmosphere I'd refuse to play anyone running a 2++ rerollable list. No point. After that, excessive proxies might cause me to walk away.
In a tourney, screamerstar or seerstar I might quit after the first round, buy my opponent a drink, and enjoy a stress free break until the next game. Congrats to them for going to a competition, seeking to avoid competitive play.

I would refuse to play someone with a spammy list. I'd play someone who had 1 heldrake, but not someone with 4 heldrakes. Also lots of proxies defeats much of the purpose of playing to me. To me WH40K is a game of looking at good looking models, talking fluff, rolling dice, and drinking beer
