Shred City.

Grinding with girls on the dance floor and smelling their hair and bodies is always worth the ticket price. I do it a few weekends a month.

See, these high schoolers still don't have the means to party for real and drink without hassle yet (see: age/legality/own cars).

School dances are just a controlled and adult-monitored, crapass version of what they'll be getting in a couple more years going to clubs and bars and ripping it up till 4am. Right now they are content to meet up on their own terms without someone who can boss them around well away from the school, and text/cam in private.

I don't know. It's nice for them to have a trainer course first. Grinding with the training wheels on, so to speak.

As I recall, you used to have to man up to ask a girl to dance face to face, while being stared down by the other girls with too much makeup. Built character and a strong dislike of the 'leave room for Jesus' rule.

The Mrs works in a high school and I can say dances are alive and well here in New England. Dance floors and bars in the article's town are gonna be real weird in about ten years.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

Meh, never got the point of a school prom. Why would I want to pay money to spend hours couped up with the same annoying people that inhabit my school?

I shouldve done it to wear a tux, though. I look sharp in a suit

I went to my SR prom and looked Fly as Feth, I went from nerdy Mall Goth to feth yeah seaking of suave quickly. Had a bunch of fun with my girlfriend at the time, went out and partied after and! I knew how to ballroom dance and did so at every opportunity, and was like 1 of 5 couples out of the 300 people there dancing for a bunch of slow songs.

I don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand, I didn't bother going to my own prom. On the other, it does seem like sort of a nice tradition.

My school didn't have dances, which did not partucularly bother me. Some schools in the UK have them though.

What is a date? Is that like sending lewd pictures of yourself?

I never went to any of those things. I planned on going to prom, but ended up pre-gaming (alone) so hard that I decided not to go, and deliberately humiliated my date as an excuse to go out and skateboard.

After reading Captain's post I should mention that I deeply regret not going to my prom, not because I thought it might be fun (it wasn't, my friends all said) but because the girl I said I'd take was very unhappy and I never meant to hurt her feelings. I still feel pretty bad about that. If I could do it again I would go presuming I knew how it shook out.

I went to prom; and if was the first time I really embraced not giving a gak. Went stag and I got more play that night than I did all of HS combined. Which is to say, any.

I also read and article about Sbarro's and other traditional "Mall Stores" were closing because no one bothered going to the mall anymore.

I saw a connection between the two articles.

Homecoming and Prom are still pretty big deals in the towns where I grew up. I always had a great time at dances, so it kinda bums me out to hear they're falling out of popularity.

And malls around me are either thriving, or completely empty/demolished already.

That's really depressing.

Well, they did find up to 5 pounds of shrooms.
But in reality, I hated the dances, I had "Friends" In highschool. But they where better friends with other people and didnt want to talk to me. I hated that I looked stupid dancing. I still look stupid, but I do it, because the Adult world is less inclined to laugh at you then teens. I hated that the rewards where rigged. I hated all about it. Im glad I never went.
Y'know how people will look back at high school as the time of their life? Not me, College, the time I have right now, I think will be the best I ever had

I had some schoold near me cancel future dances. Not because of a lack of dancing. Not because of to much grinding. But because the girls were wearing "dresses" to short and couples were having sex on the dance floor.

Not joking. Kids in high school were having sex in the middle of a dance crowd.

Different circumstances, I suppose. I hated looking stupid dancing too, but I realized by about my senior year that EVERYONE looked stupid dancing. At that point, it was just about having a school function where you could get all personal with the lady folk.

College was good times, and I used to think that those were the best times, but I'm starting to reconsider that. At this point though, I think that I'd have done myself a vast disservice by skipping out on any of my experiences because of others.

Disagree. You know when the time of your life is?

When you're 4-5 years old.

You can do enough gak to have fun and interact with other people, but you have no responsibilities beyond making the chioce, "which cartoons will I watch today" and "can I make it across the monkey bars without falling."

I don't see what makes driving so fun, but you could certainly get drunk.

And much more easily than now, I'd wager.

Well I don't know how it is in the States but I have been to 3 (soon to be 4) proms over in Canada and there is always a huge turnout. My only regret is not having bought a tux instead of renting the thing time and time again...

Even the dances throughout the rest of the year have plenty of people going, perhaps it is because I live in a smaller community?

5 pounds of shrooms? You must be talking portabellos. At 2 grams an average dose, thats enough for 1120 people, around ~15-20 grand total. Seems a bit high for a prom.

I went to 5 in High School. My own school's my sophomore, junior, and senior years, and the proms of friends that went to other schools both my junior and senior year.

Fun was had every time.

Ass was had 60% of the time.
