Lord of the Rings was boring as feth! It was so predictable and horribly boring. Oh look Frodos going to die, ah nope, he miraculously survives; seriously I was hoping for the Orcs to win and absolutely destroy the Fellowship and slaughter Rohan and Gondor at least that would be interesting.
And isn't GOT going down this road to? Only instead of miraculously surviving its their death instead. Character becomes liked....dies, character is introduced.....dies...rinse and repeat. I can say that to me GOT is becoming boring and predictable in that I feel why should I like a character because he is probably going to end up dead in a few episodes anyway.
In my original post I was trying to say that I know this is one of the things that made the show what it is. And I do love it for that, but I just feel killing of people is getting real old now.

If you read the books, Game of Thrones characters are fleshed out so much that you do like them, and so it hurts when they die. That being said, people only really focus on one or two characters and not the others.
Jon Snow, Arya, Sansa are still alive.
But you couldn't guess what happened to Reek, nor would you guess what happens to many of the characters and this is the beauty of Game of Thrones.
It keeps you in suspense on what's going to happen to your favourite characters and those you despise.
But the real beauty of GoT IMO is the characters themselves. They are fleshed out quite a lot and so there becomes characters that people like and don't like. My mate says he hates Daenerys and yet thinks that Tywin has actually got some good morals. Another mate claims that Jon Snow is a wee fething stuck up and that Stannis will become king. This affects on how you respond to the characters and who you like and don't like and the very fact that the characters are never black and white (Good and Evil) is the beauty of GoT.
Some may disagree with me on this but here's my point:
Cercei Lannister everybody hates, but you can see that she's actually trying to keep her power to save her children and make life better for her and her three bastards by hiding the truth. And this is her fatal flaw that she'll do anything to be with her children.
Joffery was a bastard (literally one) and this affect that he is a young boy given total power and being beaten and controlled by his Father and mother is his total weakness.
Each character's fate is intertwined with their personality. Ned Stark was killed because of his honour, Rob Stark was killed because he put his love life first before his duty. Catelyn Stark was killed because she tried to save her children before putting the needs of the army first. Jaimie Lannister lost his hand because of his belief that he has the greatest wealth and a father willing to pay it. The list goes on, and THIS is what makes GoT truly special and outstanding from the rest of the genre and indeed most of TV.

LoTR was leaps and bounds ahead of it's time and was heavily influenced by Tolkien's experiences in WW1 and the battle of the Somme. His ability to write about PTSD is second to none, and he did so decades before psychiatry figured it out.
That being said his experiences in war lead to him writing about a very black and white fictional conflict. There was not any clear good guys and bad guys in WW1, and the entire conflict was a Georege Martinesque slaughterhouse with no clear moral high ground. I think that's one reason why LotR is so black and white, the other is fantasy stories without a moral high ground were not around yet because Tokien pretty much invented the fantasy genre.
I enjoy Martin's books more than LotR, but comparing them to LotR is comparing apples to oranges.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Except for Ramsay. Every other character, even though they can do horrible things, you can somehow understand and relate to them. They have reasons to be evil. Ramsay is just cruel, for no reason other than he enjoy hurting others.
Well, also Rorge and the Tickler and others, but those are not developed enough for us to get much of an idea of what happens in their minds.
No pure good people, though. Of course.

No, I'd say Ramsay is a gray character also (well, a very dark gray...)
He grew up as an outcast bastard, with a notoriously cruel, cold and unemotional father. All his life he's sought his fathers love and approval, usually by emulating him. Does that make a sympathetic character? God no. But it does mean that Ramsay is a product of his environment. He's cruel because that's the environment he was raised in, and the flaying knife is all hes ever known.
Imagine how different he'd have been if he'd been sent away to another house (especially the Starks) at a very young age (3?) to be fostered as a Ward and raised in a House not known for its cruelty.

I agree- the latest book has been out for three years- go forth to your local library if you're interested in seeing the story play out.
If you've been watching this series for three years, you have the time to read a book.

Calling Ramsey "grey" after what he did to Theon is a joke. Was Theon a good guy? Nope. But Ramsey showed himself to be worse. Went on the wiki, and honestly, after reading that whole ordeal, I have concluded that Martin is nothing more than a snuff writer. And in my own opinion, a talentless one at that. The show is fairly decent, but that's due to the actors. The story itself is just a contest to see who suffers the most.

Subtle, I know -_- Thanks for clearing the Brianne issue up. Kinda liked her, but I guess only for being the only "good" character. Might have been in the worst book; can't remember if it was the 3rd or 4th, but one book was incredibly boring and a pain to read through...the entire plot line in the sand-ish desert kingdom was so...boring. Ugh.

That was her problem, though. Or rather is the problem of all "good" characters. Being "good" is endlessly harder than being "evil" and by being purely white and not making amendments to others, you will always end up in an inferior situation. Brianne was about to get the hang of it - and failed. /e: Unintended pun is awesome.

My post definitely came over more rude than I wanted it to be. I apologize for that. I was offended by you suggesting I was lazy but still did not want my post to be that harsh.
Still behind the general motion of course - if a thread says "SPOILERS" people must expect spoilers.
To give another perspective on this: as someone who has fallen behind on the series but read all the books, it's sometimes hard to say what's a book spoiler and what not =)
