Yes it's sad that g.r.e.e.n and p.y.p died, they were good characters. But it means that we'll get new nights watch characters. Expect Olly the archer to become a series regular/ recurring character.

I think the thing that disappointed me with this s episode was that Jon didn't take ghost with him when he left castle black on a suicide mission to kill m.a.n.c.e. Ray.dar. Jon and ghost walking out the gate side by side to certain death would have been cool.

And it would have scared the scrap out of the wild.l.I.n.g.s. to see a man of the night watch with a freaking dire wolf.

I got the impression that Sam was amazingly calm for everything going on around him. The character was sent to the wall by Dad because he was martially useless. In this episode his calm is infectious. He thinks clearly, he plans, he's willing to drive in with Jon until Jon tells him he's not worth as much as Jon's dog in this fight. He then runs through a melee and is almost hit by an arrow while he's doing his job and he just looks around and gets back to it. Honestly I felt like Sam grew a pair which is a nice shift from the books.

I thought this episode was extremely well done. And this was the only time I didn't want to punch Thorne in the face. At least he's got the ability to go with the swagger.

Pissed that Grenn took the blacksmith's place. I knew it was going to happen when the order came but I'm not happy with that or with Pip..

Not really the blacksmith was more badass. hahaha.

Yes I do wonder why John didn't head off to kill Mance with Ghost following him.

Something interesting that was spotted from the preview for next week, and something that would be a big switch from the books if it is indeed true:

I enjoyed that episode. The tracking shot through the Castle Black courtyard was great. Kill of the week goes to the giant with his sweet shooting skills. Or the scythe although I am confused way they didn't drop that straight away and make the climb impossible. Oh, and the little kid getting his badass nod after sniping Ygritte.

Would have been cooler / made more sense - but maybe he did not want to get his pet killed............then again last time when Jon went for his wonder about in the snow - would have been a good idea to have him there as well - likely meant he would not have been captured (etc)

Of course the wolves don't really do much in the books (except get killed) and it costs money to have them on screen with people.

I noticed that the Wilding within the Owl had no problem scouting the fort - good job the Wildlings did not bother with that more often or would have found the hundreds of miles of empty wall and small numbers left

I don't think the Scythe permanently damaged the wall, it just scrapes the ice (and wildlings) off as it swings by. Other wildlings can still climb up on the part that is left, that's why they pulled it back up into position.

Tend to agree - its perhaps the most divorced from anyone else and it would be good for her to stay in Westros.............

If anything I would rather learn about Jaquen Ha'qaur or another facelessman who is killing people. They sound interesting but still, the starks are so few in numbers ugh.

Getting eaten by her own out of control dragons would be hilariously ironic.

Last night was probably one of my favourite episodes so far, though I feel that this is one of the few times that the books were better than the TV show for one of the big events, I think that it's hard to convey the size or scale of the wall on film. I don't like that they killed both Pyp and Grenn I can understand why they killed off Grenn but killing Pyp too just felt a bit too much for me.
I do like the way they handled Sam and Ser Alliser in this episode, those were the two best changes from the books. That and the appearance of the cooks.
Was I the only one watching the scythe and thinking it was the most stupid things they've done in the show, l men what was the point in it or the archers going down the sides it looked cool but the guys climbing up were no real threat. That and has no one in Westeros ever thought of using boiling oil one pot of it would have gotten rid of a fair few of the Thens.

Actually its a good idea. a single swipe and you got rid of the people climbing the wall and you just reset it.

but yeah, Grenn still died like a hero.

Pyp felt like a rush death.

Nope not true - Dany is the best thing in the books - its all the people on the Wall of Dullness and frolicking with "not Elves" that need killing..................soon

That's nice - Dany and her Dragons, plus Tyrion are mine

each to their own!

Must admit I can't recall Pyp or most of the other of the Nights Watch from the books as I skimmed those bits as of little interest to me......

Nope. She's crazy, she's basically the Mad King on Steriods if you ask me. She wants to kill everyone for vengeance! She is more evil than tywin lannister. She thinks her right to the throne is her birth right!

The wall is more important than dany's storyline. Without the wall the people of westeros are fethed.

I love the Nights Watch and Bran's storyline. I hate Dany because she is oh so beloved. Read the books again if you can't see examples of her madness!

I love Dany, didn't realize so many people hated her. I also think it's a huge leap to call her crazy. She may be a bit vengeful, but she's no Joffrey.

Yes so hanging all those people on sign posts, watching her brother die, killing all the upper class, and also vowing to slaughter the entirety of the lannisters and anyone that betrayed her family is sane?
Yes lets go with that!

But those guys climbing the wall were no real threat. When they get to the top they're going to be vulnerable when they're trying to drag themselves over the top and any of those who do make it over will be in no state to put up a fight.
