I wasn't being all that negative, at least i didnt mean to be negative. (well the 6 weeks thing was.) 4-5 custom ets a year would be cool. As long as we can also buy the character models outside of the box sets.

Wait, do we have a definition of a "starter set"? I didn't think GW themselves used that term, I think containing 2 armies, a rulebook and a book to use the models in the set pretty much is what defines a starter set. A self contained game which is the starter for a larger 40k collection.

Starter set is a set for people who are starting the game. Includes templates.

Actually since this box does not contain templates or measuring sticks it would be a poor starter set. It is not an all you need box.
Edit....it also does not have dice.
So its either not a starter, or a poorly planned one.

Given that DV seems to be coming back next week, I imagine this set is aimed at longer term fans who want to get a copy of the mini rulebook without buying another copy of that set, so it offers them something a little different that coincides with recent codex releases (with SW rumoured to be on the horizon).

Wolves players got one new model in this box... A Wolf Lord, on foot - so something that can be easily made anyway from the regular Space Wolves sprue, if you actually need one, which most people won't because Rune Priests and Wolf Priests are better options unless you're taking a Thunderwolf...

Where is it confirmed that DV is coming back? I sure hope so, because starters are important for inducting new players in this expensive hobby.
I'm sure many of us are still waiting to purchase an inexpensive and light rule book rather than the BRB. Updating the old DV with new rule set should be simple and inexpensive.

Depends on what army you want, both are great for starting.
I'd buy Stormclaw because the 2 Characters are cool and it comes with the rules for 2 formations.
The only thing you need to keep in mind is Stormclaw doesn't come with templates/dice. Which aren't expensive, but you need them.
DV= Chaos Space Marines and Dark Angels
Stormclaw=Space Wolves and Orks

Well you could always play solo, but it would be similar to playing Checkers or Chess solo.
It's made for 2 players, head to head, they look to be interesting to play from what I saw in the White Dwarf discussion on them.

The "campaign" in Stormclaw are what I guess you could call " PvP"?
According to White Dwarf it is 3 missions that use different parts of the box at different times, culminating in a final mission that uses everything. It is apparently something similar to the Dark Vengeance box, where you have a "small campaign booklet" that walks you through that single set.
Most likely it will be rolled into the second volume of Sanctus Reach.

I wonder how much the Mini dex will go for. Im not going to pay 75 dollars for a book with artwork that's recycled in one, and hobby tips I can get for free online. Also I question its longevity, since they have proved their willingness to abandon ship for more profit so soon into the life of an edition.

See, that scares me, only because I want to pick up the Sanctus Reach books for the fluff and Imperial stuff, but I don't want to buy them all and then have a "complete edition" come out later for a reduced price.
Also, this IS GW, so it my vary well be that those sheets are gone when the sets are gone.

I spoke to the guy who runs a local GW store on Friday about the new boxset. He told me that this isn't the new starter set, but a boxset to support the new campaign. A new starter set would have things that have already been mentioned such as dice, templates etc. He also said that if it was a new starter set, it wouldn't have a limited run. The way it was explained to me is that this box is try and encourage people into a new army whether they be new to the hobby or existing, by using a campagin to get them more intersted. To back it up, he also said he will still be selling Dark Vengeance alongside this boxset.
Not sure if this helps or not?
Cheers.

From what I understood from what I was being told, DV will be replaced with a new starter box later in the year. In my store anyway, DV is still on the shelves even with this new box coming out, as they are considered by GW as different things (one is a starter set, one is a campaign boxset).
Basically this new boxset is GW trying a new(ish) sales angle. By that I mean, if this boxset and campaign release go well, we will see more new campagins with boxset releases in the future.
