All looking good folks! There are some fast workers out there....

Still playing with character concepts here - hadn't considered Harlequin's before but they're now in the possible options mekugi It's very definitely more of a chaos artefact than Webway related though...

Should have some more progress to show tomorrow...or rather, later today.

I feel I should point out that any rivet placement will be character based, not road based....this road is certainly not held together by proper stuff like rivets

Good progress people.

Don't be put off by feeling like a turtle to the hares amongst us: There's still plenty of time to get a piece done and it's doesn't matter who finishes first.

And from how close the last competition was, don't give up, do your best, push your abilities that little bit further, and you could easily finish on top.

There we go. That should be enough inspiration for a few more days.

Here is where I am at for the moment. I'm planning to make a fairly complete section of an overpass then carefully wreck it then detail and paint it up.
I'm going to have to make a few more modular pieces of the road to make it useful for gaming (so it doesn't stand out as being the only bit of road on the board) but I think I'll focus my entry on the overpass section.

Looking at this project, made me think of this:

I had a similar idea but didnt think I could pull it off. Excited to see how this one comes out. =D

i think this competition is a very good round again...lots of cool projects coming together... I like all your plans and concepts a lot peeps! makes me envious ^^...and RED...that is probably the fitting(st) poem one could find... (I even get some education here )

speaking of... I have prepared a little step by step below for your own education concerning working with different materials and plasticcard... as I´ve found working with something else and PC always requires superglue or all purpose glue you never get THAT strong a connection of the materials you would get when only working with plasticcard...but fret not... I have come up with a clever sandwich method...

what I have the last days been working on was the lifting system of my lifting bridge...

so here it comes...

the lifting "arm"...made twice...

to create this structure here...

the lots of crosses are just a mock up to make a bit of a girder look...but I think it failed as it looks too cramped...it didn´t survive the wife inspection...so it came off...but the basic structure is tested and approved...

this is the first testing of the lifting ability of the bridge and its arm...well... it works... but still with just "raw" chains...

and here is the step by step of the tested and working sandwich method...:

for hooks as shown here I used some hooks my wife supplied me with of old bra´s of her ...she can be very generous to me from time to time...and it made it possible for her to get new ones... it is a double win win situation

I bended the hook to have this form... then I made an upper "bread" part...that got a hole fitting for the hook part..., a middle cheese part that actually holds the hook with two needed holes for the loops...and then a lower "bread" part to seal the contraption...

these were put together with plastic glue...

and then all was put together ...

and this is how you really get a strong bind of mixed materials... just ignore the not fitting materials and rely on bonds that you know work^^...

and this is the contraptions together with the chains...

I hope you´ll like...and maybe this is of some use for someone...

cheers, vik

Nice work vik....looks good

Bit of extra detailing on the road:

And a concept for a true-scale marine to be wandering said road:

More pics on my blog....

Was going to add more strips to the road, but have stopped for the moment whilst I ponder a new direction.....

Instead of having the figures fighting amongst themselves I'm thinking of having some of the combatants forming out of the road itself....this might help to fit in with the idea of tentacles coming out of the surface for the support structure as well as hopefully being a cool idea. This means I have to reconsider some of the placements and interactions, so a brief planning pause whilst I consider the ramifications...........

well... the forming out of the road characters will probably look convincing after it got painted... but I think I like the idea...

and pourspelur has got a point there... the whole idea is very twilight and this times apart alter ego thing is quite a good idea for the road...

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Affton, MO. USA

Reported here from my blog, just to prove its really happening

So it begins.....(cue techno music).......mortal Kom......wait wrong movie (cue symphonic music)......

A long long long time ago (I'm old) in a theatre not terribly far away (okay its gone and is now a parking lot ) a little boy watched a great movie about evil versus good (rebel scum are the bad guys trying to overthrow the rule of the imperium, we call them terrorist nerfherders ). Now with a re injection of modeling fun and the x-wing game out I want to bring back more of the fun, and what could be more fun than a trench run .

Anyway start of the build, the table will be done later. Why do all the really fun builds start with a trip to the hardware store? Because we needs a skeleton or he deathstar of course. 3/4" MDF(medium density fiberboard) had it cut while I was there, so the three pieces we will see right now are two at 5"x60" and one 8"x60". I'll be screwing these together shortly, but have to get my daughter from the bus stop ( first day of middle school )

Falcon and x-wing for scale. Cardboard box at end will be the target wall.

Vader eye perspective, I wanted a little maneuvering in the trench, but not much, also height of trench so most ships can be fully inside. I want to have rules for being down inside and being above. I hope to be able to make a clear plastic piece to transverse the trench so. Ship can fly over the top and its base be above, just for perspective.

Bits from work to be exhaust ports or possible target points. Any suggestions?

Just for clarity the ground will be flat, only the walls will get texture, this is to allow for smooth gameplay.

Indeed I have PourSpelur - the original idea was multiple versions, which I then locked down to four characters with two versions of each, to show they were caught in time as well as space. However now I'm thinking of the road-demons rising from the surface that cuts down the available characters, and I'm not sure that two pairs will work so well, so it may be foue individuals no....but nothing set in stone yet.

Theo - Speaking of time loops...that looks strangely familiar ......Have you ever had that strange sensation of deja vu?

Ahoy All! Just a little update from last night..... managed to get a rickity old timber bridge put together.... really want a sense that it could fall apart at any time.... but i am not very happy with it.... just think it looks a bit to ... spaced out..... ?! I want it to be really minimal in structure with just the 2 running boards to allow vehicles to cross... (a Rhino can fit on the bridge)

And also built up the bridgehead with some more timber planks and a metal reinforcing section....

Old Guard house and details to be added tonight!

Cheers All!

MagosBiff90 - I think the bridge looks good, especially colorful I do like the broken off timber uprights, they look look realistically broken.

@Theophony: Cool, you know they built the film model like that, then covered it with bits from all sorts of model kits, really looking forward to how yours pans out.

@Vik: awesome bridge, is the girder effect on the road part of the bridge made from plastic washing pegs? hard to make it out.

@Littletower: That's really cool, hard to get more realistic rust than real rust

@monkey troll: Really looking forward to yours.

Well there are lots of road related songs out there. We could probably have one for each week of the competition and not run out.

Nice way to tick a box, LT. The problem with using real rusty metal on a model is that it will show up any painted rust if you don't get it right (I used some on my Junk pile piece). But you have proven to be good with rust, and your matching in your thread appears to work well.

Well, got some supplies yesterday but not all, but enough time delaying the work.

Began the cement barricades today. According to my sketch I need 9 I think, but cut enough for 11, so made all of them.

The starting block

Reducing the block to appropriate size

Shaping the block

Sanding down the roughness

Cutting out the fork lift grooves

Next I am going to cut what little sprue I got left to make the reflectors on each of the barricades.
Then I am going to examine each barricade and determine how best to apply damage to them based on the cutting imperfections.

Nice barricades gamesetc , I've never used styrofoam for things other than hills or bloodbowl pitches before, cool idea.

Well quick update, only had a half hour this morning before getting kids up for church.

Lollipop row. The round parts are half of the squinkies balls and the tubes down are waxed cardboard lollipop sticks I got a year ago from Walmart out of their baking section. The bottom piece is from an IV kit the hospital uses, but our pumps have a different connection so these are discarded out of all the kits. Hopefully once painted they will look like liquid or gas storage containers mounted to the walls of the deathstar.

One foot partly done, five more feet on this side to continue to detail.....plus the 6ft of base....plus the other side .

Theo - Look like storage tanks to me...good job! And if you think of it as being almost 1/18th of the way through the detailing it's not so bad...well...err....

Grim - Did you get any shinies you can use for the project?

And some random shots showing positioning of figures - but not all the figures are finalised yet, still very much wip.....

Hah! Your posing is excellent! The marine hanging by one of the wispy parts and shooting is awesome

I got Mars Attacks!, Operation Icestorm, and a Battle Zones Sci-Fi Ruined Quadrant. Probably nothing for my current project idea, and though I could build some kind of road with battlezones, it wouldn't be nearly scratchbuildy enough for a competition like this.

Lots of shinies to distract me though, that's for sure

Added varying degrees of damage to the concrete barricades. All they require now is the reflectors and painting.

Then I started on the mechanical arm today.

Prepped the box with a magnet and the arm with a small sliver of tin so that when open it will stay open

Closed

Open

Just need to add the sides to the box and then add detail work to the outside of the box.

Also did a lil work on my Thunderhawk today. More to come tomorrow!
