I'm pretty sure I had an old lead mini with the weird gun/fist thing shown in the centre of the picture. I never knew what it was supposed to be.

From when ork fluff was so much more fun. Circa 2nd ed. is still my Ork fiction (more specifically grot fiction) universe of choice.

Epic vintage pic RobS- that severed ork head right at the top is just so stupidly funny.

Some 2nd ed Nids from circa 2009. Later got stripped and added to Hissys hive.

Ratius,

Well three of the models on the Eavy Metal Page are still in use in my Eldar army. In fact they all just had a strip and repaint in the last two years.

Cheers,

I’ve only got 2 of them in active service (the Warlock and Hawk). But in my defense, the mini I use for a DA exarch is of similar vintage, if not older.

And to add something to this thread, some dryads.

What you were expecting? Some hot elf-like hippy looking wood-themed chick? Nope. Only way you want to hit that is with an axe. But the theme for the painting comp this month is “Wild World” so I needed to go dig deep into my WHFB Wood Elf army that never really got off the ground. Ironic, as the theme of the army was going to either be tree-kin or stuff on the wing. Got some warhawk riders flitting around somewhere...

I could break out the lightbox for better pics. And pick a time when they’ve not been drinking...

Those old codex’s really are treasures. Last night I grabbed my Wood Elf army book of similar vintage (5th ed WHFB?) for paint examples for my dryads, and ended up spending half an hour reading stories and looking at pictures.

So much quality content. Just don’t make them like that anymore.

Looking at those model shots, both the Ultramarines and the Orks are utterly gubbed there.

Actually, no; if it's the Ultramarines turn, they might be able to take down the Warriors with the Devastator combat squad nearest the camera, then Tigurius, the land speeder and the rest of the Marines might be able to mop up the 'stealers.

But then, the 'stealers are too close to the Devastators to be ignored in favour of the Warriors, so they'll need to try and get rid of the 'stealers first. It might depend on which psychic powers Tigurius has.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Those models came out for 2nd edition, but fairly late on, I think.

A favorite past-time of mine was to look at those shots and try to figure out who was going to win the matchup. Normally the guys who’s book it was, but not always. And the ones in WD were a toss up; less plot armor/favoritism there.

I did that all the time. Hell, I did that the second I saw the pictures above before I even read down to other people doing it.

Friend of mine took that Tyranid Codex everywhere when he started playing. Couldn't get enough of it. Such great books.

I adored that Codex.

The rules for the Lictor were the only good rules the Lictor has ever had. It was a big Genestealer basically, and so dangerous.

I remember one game where one of mine took on a Epistolary in Terminator Armour. The two spent the entire game unable to kill one another. It was hilarious to watch.

The opening story about Tyran was really amazing.
I simply had read nothing like it before - the sense of brooding, unknown destruction was awe inspiring - no hyperbole.

Kinda like the introduction of the Crons early on rather than the trainwreck of newcrons now. But I digress

Isn't it also the book that has the short story about about Sergeant Mallion's ill-fated Catachan patrol that gets eaten by the Predator a Lictor?

I loved that story as a kid.

In 2nd edition, I had Space Wolves, and my friend had Tyranids. IIRC, the only thing that could equal a genestealer in close combat was a charging Wolf Guard in terminator armour with lightning claws, and that cost about three times as much.

The 'stealer cult list was brutal too; that Tyranid codex came out before the Imperial Guard list, so the cult still got access to thudd guns, tarantulas, land speeders and suchlike, as well as man-portable heavy plasma guns and multi-meltas. Then you had genestealers using cheap rhinos as mobile cover, and things often went wrong for my beleaguered forces.

But couldn't Ragnar just stuff grenades down their throats in close combat? That was totally a thing in the 2nd ed. Space Wolves codex.
