How old is too old? I got into a discussion with my parents and sister about this. Just enter the cutoff age for trick-or-treating. If anyone out of the US has a different perspective/tradition about trick-or-treating or the cutoff age, I would really love to hear it.

Try this scenario. You walk up to a house, ring the doorbell, and say "trick or treat." At what age will they call the police instead of giving you candy? That's the cut-off.

I don't think anyone is too old, but the quality of your costume should be proportional to your age. Teenagers turning up with some half-assed facepaint and a carton of eggs are less welcome.

I think once you are old enough to buy the candy for yourself you should stop expecting free candy, but you can still show off a costume at any age.

I'd say early teens (and as said above the costume should decent if older kids)
but no cut off if you're accompanying younger kids and if you're in a decent costume you get candy too

As long as you're short enough and don't have to talk, you can trick or treat forever (one of the few advantages of being 5'6")
Alternatively, you can just borrow someone's little monster and take them for a cut of the loot.

I'm from the UK and I hate trick or treating. American TV and film has colonised the minds of children, who go trick or treating. When I was 5 years old we didn't shout "Trick or treat!" We had a wee song. Can't remember it now because no one's sang it in years due to the ToT culture. Something about putting a penny in an old man's hat.
Anyway, the cut off is when you feel too old, or when the old lady says "Oh feth off, grow up!"

14 for proper trick or treating. - You can get away with it longer though if you transition to the person taking the kids out.
Although, in Scotland, it's wasn't trick or treating for me, it was Guising and you didn't get away with saying 3 words. Oh no, you had to work for your sweeties, by either telling some jokes, a poem or a funny story.

No age limit, and if you're over the age of 21 you might just get a beer in your candy basket if your costume really kicks ass.

If you make popcorn balls that are stale enough, or poorly wrapped enough, the question is moot. (Bruised fruit will also work.)

Lol. I did get a (good!) cigar once when I was a lad. My pops wouldn't let me smoke it until I was 15.

Its not what age, its what region. In some parts of England halloween has been corrupted by todays youth.
Trick o0r treating doesnt mean a choice between offering a sweet or having a hooter blown in your face, it means hand over a fiver or have gravel thrown at the windows. Police are busy at Halloween.
Generally trick or trating was always for 'children' but as we cant even decided on what age range constitutes childhood as a society where do we draw the lne, besides you cant tell nowadays, especially with females If some trick or treaters come to your door and they are the usual street 'kids' that from appearances can be any range from 12 to 20 (and would in other circumstances be classed as jailbait); what do you do? Ask for ID?

Oh wow, that's a song I haven't heard in a long time. "If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do. If you haven't got a ha'penny then god bless you".
(You know times have changed, when reading that makes you think: "Hmm, these conditional if statements could be replaced with polymorphism...")

When you're about my age (14) or older, you really shouldn't go trick-or-treating anymore.
Here in the Netherlands, we don't usually celebrate Halloween, but we have a similar tradition on St. Martin's Day (with lanterns and singing silly songs instead of costumes) but children usually stop doing it when they are about 12 or something.
I still went last year, but some people already asked if I wasn't a little old for it.

If you are in a costume, and say “trick or treat” you get candy. I don’t discriminate against age. The young kids have cute costumes, the older ones might egg my house. They both get candy. I do give more candy for better costumes. Went through about 10 pounds last night.

It usually involves more partying when you get to your mid-teens and up, or you can do what I did this year and invite friends over to drink and watch horror movies.

I read in the paper that for Halloween, Americans are expected to spend $7.4billion (£4.3billion if I recall correctly)on Halloween. $7.4billion... $70 per person or something like that.
I walked the dog last night for about an hour, covering two miles or so, as usual. I saw two families with children between 4 and 6 and one house with a pumpkin lantern outside who answered the door. However, the station platform was filled with about twenty or more loud, drunk women in costumes.
The local police had a special order in place so that people could be moved on and arrested if they returned. I think there were 1800 complaints last year and apart from the two families and the drunk ladies the only other evidence of Halloween celebrations were the morons setting off fireworks in the distance. I also saw a fire engine on call out last night too.
I don't see any appeal in Trick or Treating personally and it was never a factor when I was growing up however, teenagers and tweens (especially drunk ones) should get short shrift.
