Yes, yes, of course. Don't do stupid stuff, don't post stupid stuff. Obviously.
But young people are still going to do it sometimes, and I reckon we won't destroy society by being a little understanding of that.
I guess though as they grow older they'll have a better understanding, and might be more forgiving about some crap being online because by then pretty much everyone will have crap online.
Christ it gets tiresome having to listen to the tough guy routine in here whenever stuff like this gets discussed though.

You would be wrong. Not all 'low-paid service workers' hate their jobs. And 'low-paid' is a relative term as well. Remember... just because someone who is 30 and feeding 9 kids has different needs than a 14 year old doesn't mean that everyone sees the job the same way.
I know people who really like their 'low-paid service jobs' because it fits their life style. I know someone who after a lifetime of being a cook has horrible carpel tunnel and it is hard to work like she used to. Her expenses are reasonable but she took a job delivering food for a restaurant. She makes minimum wage + 1.50 delivery charge per delivery + mileage + tips. It has a flexible schedule and she basically gets to drive around in her car which she likes doing. She has a nice boss and co-workers and makes pretty damn good tips for the level of effort and skill she needs to perform. She is pretty happy about her job and really enjoys it, makes reasonable money for her effort, doesn't have to rely on her hands, and has minimal stress. And she has a flexible schedule so she can live her life and interact with family when she needs to. Also in Appalachia, her wage is pretty good, if she was making that in the metro area near me, she would be broke and starving but yet we live in the same state.
Would an entitled teenager or a single parent working 3 jobs feel the same way about the job as a middle aged retired person doing extra income on the side? Probably not. There are many people who would hate that job because it won't pay them enough, they dislike driving or feel like it is beneath them. Doesn't mean the job is bad and universally hated.
Different jobs exist for different reasons... what is a sub-par job to be full-time employment for someone with a lot of expenses may be perfect for someone else. For someone literally at the bottom, with zero work experience to say it is beneath them and complain about it, that is bs.

Thing that makes me laugh is that she went into the place and ASKED for a job ... then complained about it because they gave her what she asked for?!?
She is young, I will grant that, the thing about it is that if you did not want the job, why fill out an application? Did her parents force her? If so, what kind of hell do you think she faced when this got out?
NVM, her parents will probably sue the place, I mean, WHY NOT?

Tough guy routine? It pointing out that foolish actions may have consequences that is a very low threshold for the label "tough guy"
How about this for a solution; their parents can parent and inform them of the perils of social media, and the potential long term consequences for college and career.

I worked for a pizza place as a driver. I loved it, if you hustled you made darned good money. As I was working 3 jobs at a time at that point, this was my favorite of the three.
Son2 andI have had the 'social media talk' several times while he was in high school and college (he is signing in to his first unit as an active duty army ossifer today). We discussed how his generation is screwing themselves when it comes to security clearances and job eligibility by posting dumb stuff to be cool. He kept his gak clean and is careful whom he 'friends' on various sites, he gets it. He may be an exception, and that is sad. Stupidity has always had consequences. Advertising your stupidity may well have longer duration/more severe consequences.

The sacking was justified, but how she was sacked was completely unprofessional at best; you do that stuff in private and through the proper channels, not through a public social networking site with a 140-character limited response.
I'll step into this echo chamber.

I think the girl should have been fired, and it was OK to do so via twitter. It should just have been communicated better by the owner:
"If you don't want to work for us, please don't come in tomorrow. We will not be employing you after all. Good luck."
You know, a short *professional* message that accepts her resignation.

I'm fairly certain that someone once complained about an interview before heading to the interview. When he arriveed, the interviewer turned his computer to the interviewee and was like 'yeah, jog on'.
I remember that when I started working, part of my contract was 'anything you post online which critises the company can be used against you'.
I was stupid when I was younger, but at least I was stupid in private.

In a stint as a Milkman many years ago I worked over Christmas, and I can say with absolute conviction that those less affluent homes always tipped, and when they did so, they tipped significantly better than those who lived in grander style.
I also have a wealthy uncle, who is as tight as a gnats's chuff. You don't make money by giving it away.
My theory is is that people on a lower wage appreciate what it's like to have a low paid, undervalued, hard-graft, manual job and tip accordingly. I have no real idea why the wealthier individuals don't tip as regularly though.
Perhaps a wealthy tightwad would like to put forward an explanation?

I tip 25-30% regularly, so I don't think I'm a tightwad, but I do make a reasonable living. They do say that the best way to have money is not to spend money though.

I'm curious why did she even apply for the job if she didn't want, nor like it? seriously, I would have fired her myself, although may have not been nice about it, lets face it we are living in the spoiled generation where its all about gimmee, gimmee.
on another note saw the first episode of the Slap last night, and that kids parents do not know how to raise a child, and feel sorry for them later.

Even if a kid is being a little gak, you don't slap it - you make the parents take the kid home.

Given the owner's response, it seems old people have similar issues. In fact, when it comes to social media, I would argue that old people have a harder time behaving intelligently when using it than young ones; yet they often get the equivalent of a free pass due "Kids these days!" or some other such nonsense.
Asterios wrote:I'm curious why did she even apply for the job if she didn't want, nor like it?
Given her likely age? Parental pressure, and limited options.
Dreadclaw69 wrote:

I believe he was referring to comments that amounted to "Well, good to know she's a failure.". In fact, I don't think anyone has argued that foolish actions won't have consequences, rather that they don't necessarily render a person a failure.
Dreadclaw69 wrote:

That would require their parents to learn how social media works, and how to properly use it; which is actually quite difficult. Well, unless you happen to be a business, or representative thereof, and can basically just post copy.
