Yeah, with those scale pics the Stoneskull Expansion is still a pass for me. I think I'm going to be a lot more picky with this one.

My understanding was that it was more bizarre than that. The production run for the Kickstarter is done in China because of the volume, and then molds get shipped to the US and then Reaper does ongoing production here. Because they did buy an injection molder for Texas, but it would take too long to do all of the Kickstarter models in house.
Edit: The post where they talk about the plastic injection device: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1513061270/reaper-miniatures-bones-an-evolution-of-gaming-min/posts/372217
and comment from that update:
The KS minis would not be ready in time for a March shipment if we waited for the machine to be delivered and set up. As such, the KS figures are made in China. As it is, the China facility has 14 of these machines and it is taking them 5 months to complete manufacturing, so our one machine would take years to replicate the volume necessary for fulfillment.
We have secured all necessary permits (you'd be surprised how long some of those things take!) and are ready to break ground on the new construction to house our plastics operations. We will try to take regular pictures.
Thanks for everyone's support!
I remember they had a video of it at one point, but I don't have that link handy.

I haven't looked at the KS since pretty much it opened and they've got some nice additions. The asian dragon looks particularly nice as you don't really get alot of that type of dragon sculpt in minis games. I wonder how many pieces that'll come in given all the tiny limbs sticking out at various angles. I'm not familiar personally with the larger bones material figs so I don't know what it is capable of casting wise. The initial rollout to both KS backers on a $1M project plus the stock to all the retail outlets/distributors that get bones figs is likely an order of magnitude by my guess greater than the monthly upkeep. It sounds worth it to get a bulk discount on that then move the smaller upkeep runs over to the US.

Most definitely! Link? It still would be an impressive model for Bones though and my question of the number of likely pieces still stands. Also, did they ever actually come out and say what the bones material is?
monders wrote:The majority of these Bones minis are, imo, pretty poor quality sculpts. Why are they so popular?
Super cheap (in the KS... just plain cheap at retail) minis in classical D&D style that you don't have to assemble. That one piece casting though does tend to limit the poses to a 2nd edition 40k style 2D pose. I haven't gotten into them previously because I got my fill of the above with D&D prepainted minis but I could imagine folks that didn't and want hordes of D&D style minis would have that itch scratched with the bones campaigns.

The vast majority of them are miles better, imho, than even the best sculpt put out for that Wasteland KS in your signature. Why did you back it? The answer of course is that tastes vary.

Inexpensive.
Fun to paint.
Better sculpts than the pictures seem to say (still not top of the line - but better than minis from the eighties and nineties).
Can be transported without fear of having bits fall off or get broken. (I have seen a Bones miniature painted by Victoria Lamb crushed beneath the massive weight of Game of Thrones, then come out unscathed.)
Essentially - they are good value for money.

The are really not bad sculpts. A few are not well done true ...but just take a look at James wappels webpage to see how good they can look.
http://wappellious.blogspot.com/search/label/Bones
Victoria lamb painted up an orc and it looks fantastic and alot of the time I cant tell the difference between a metal and a bones when painted exactly the same.
AND they are an amazing deal.
While I like the McDonald's analogy I don't think it applies here. The quality is pretty high on most of them. People seem bound and determined to say .."oh there a good price but they are awful looking"..when they are not awful at all.
Is it a GW level of detail sculpt? no
But its pretty damn good

So, what am I missing? It looks to me like it could function as a GW plastic model (which costs less and isn't Bones) or a scale model of a historical weapon (which costs less and isn't Bones). Is it much bigger than the competition? It certainly doesn't look very Sci Fi or unique.
I'd love to buy some of her troopers in Bones, even with a surcharge for her sculpting, but I just don't see what makes that gun attractive at anything near $70.

I'm not a great painter, and I don't have a great camera, but I am pleased with my progress on painting my Bones II minis. These are all WIP, and so far done at my son's house where there is only a pretty limited range of paints, but you can see that the detail on these is OK. And they were huge fun to paint.

It's worth noting too that light colors like white really don't show detail well in pictures. Bones minis hit with a light primer and wash look a lot better than they do in pictures posted on the KS. Which makes it a little odd that they don't do that.

It's not bones either.. it's a more rigid plastic they use for things that need to maintain a rigid mechanical shape. Similar in nature to their bases but a light gray material.

Yep! use their pledge calculator, pick the stuff you want and chose a $1 reward level. The calculator is well designed and makes life easier in the long run. It'll remember what you pledged for and they use it anyway to determine what rewards to send you.

Personally the draw is that it's a Vic / Jake sculpt that (as a 'murrican) I wouldnt have to pay the Australia tax on. If this gun goes well for Reaper and Vic then it may lead to Vic's work being easier for me to get.

You're also getting six crew with it. Vic's standard troopers average ~$5 per figure, so you're looking at ~$30 for the crew and ~$40 for the gun, which makes sense.
It is a touch on the expensive side for my tastes, but its within reason for a boutique store that produces high quality minis. Opinions may differ, and I don't fault anyone for thinking it.
Then again, $30 in the KS is a steal, so I'll be getting all I want right now.
