I finally managed to start playing at about 10pm last night, and I seem to be drifting towards a fairly sneaky high INT/PER/AGI build, with a bit of strength so that I can actually carry the junk I'm using to upgrade my stuff.
I started with a 10 CHA, 10 INT character but given how fighty the game seems to be now, I restarted and toned it down to 5's across AGI, INT, CHA, PER, with the spare bonus point to luck. I plan to just pimp out base building and crafting perks and focus on building up Sanctuary for a while with the odd venture out on a mission when I get bored.

For those of us who, you know, seem to actually like the game it is pretty good as is. And certainly will be for a while at least!
I'm a Fallout fan, in the sense of having played the whole franchise (even the early 00s console spin-offs). I find FO3 to be a fun but ultimately average game, quite good for its exploration part, poor as a shooter (game ran on an outdated engine completely unsuited for shooters) and with a dismal narrative (haven't tried FO4 yet but from their previous games, Bethesda can't write a decent script even for their lives). FNV was way better although still suffering from the engine issue.
So, has FO4 truly adressed and solved the problems FO3 had? It seems they improved in the shooting department, although to be honest I'm fairly skeptical, Skyrim's engine wouldn't have been my choice for a shooter either.

Just cleared out the USAF base near sanctuary and got a nice buff to my sneaking for my troubles, and I'm probably gonna spend some time fixing Sanctuary for a while.
Also, with regards to the modding conversation; I like the idea in principle, but I put the basic highly recommended mods on my New Vegas game, and it broke it; it kept on just dropping straight to desktop or blue-screening, which isn't ideal. Hopefully the modding system for this one will be slightly more rigorous.
NV was never very good for modding, you have to be pretty careful with it. The skyrim modding scene is pretty good (and with the nexus mod manager, it does all the install/uninstall and download work for you). Since this is being built of the skyrim engine, it should be reasonably solid, just do a little research about incompatibilities (it will generally say what specific or general kinds of mods they will be incompatible with in the description) and you should b fine. Also, loading it up with mods doesn't help. When you have 150-200+ on any system that isn't pretty resilient, it can cause some super-long loading times.
I'm pretty excited to find out what people will do. There are some amazing quest mods out there, even mods that add DLC-sized quests and areas to explore (or in the case of Project Brazil, a whole new game). Automatically Appended Next Post: Korinov wrote:

It was the story that really killed it for me. It was so dull and uninteresting. After playing NV, which had very interesting narratives, both in the main story-line and in side-quests, it was a real disappointment.

Really?
I was totally un-invested in the story in NV. Most of the side quests were pretty pants as well. Just played through them and the DLC not knowing what the hell was going on or really nor caring about anyone or anything involved most of the time. I think the first time I played NV I completed the game in about 5 hours without even touching 95% of the game and didn't even realise. Having gone back through it trying to complete every quest before doing the main story line, it is all just so bitty and petty.
I found FO3 involving though.

I didn't at all. I found the characters of NV interesting and unique. There was a lot more depth to the story and the factions. Even the faction that was portrayed as the "bad" faction, the legion, had some positives behind it. The land controlled by the legion is orderly, free of bandits and raiders. Now, they didn't actually have time to finish the legion lands (because bethsesda gave them 18 months, when most games take 2 years at minimum), so it's a bit harder to fins that out, but siding with the legion is by far one of the more interesting paths to take. And there's another thing I liked, it allowed me to choose which path I go on. Do I want to side with the legion, is the bad really worth the good? Or the NCR, a force for good, for democracy, for freedom, but bogged down in bureaucracy, corruption, and a failing economy. Or Mr. House, an old-world force, powerful, but self obsessed, and with weakening chains, not even able to keep his own in check. Or do you want to go it alone, lead the Mojave in to a bright future of your own creation. And that's not even touching on the minor factions. And each companion was well thought out, with their own story-lines and quests behind them, which you can dramatically influence how they end up after the second battle for Hoover Dam.
And, with the exception of honest hearts (I love the characters, and the area was nice, but it was a bit short for my tastes) the DLCs were great. With Dead Money you had a very atmospheric quest-line and area. Extremely linear, but that's OK, because it fit the story-line. The characters were interesting, and the reward was very much worth it. With Old World Blues, it brings you into a land of mad science, with the highly unique (and extremely eccentric) mad scientists, and their creations. And finally, with Lonesome Road, you have the final confrontation with the original courier 6, and brings you back to the story of how you got there. Interesting narrative, interesting place (although I wish it has been a bit bigger), with some great rewards (advance riot armour FTW).

That is... odd. I've never had anything like that. The worst I've had is occasional CTDs when going into a new area, but that happens anyway with NV, and it always manged to auto-save first.

Yeah, it was irritating. I got as far as the powder gangers attacking the gas station with the town helping me, and gave up. It took about ten crashed before I got to that point, and I just couldn't be bothered to deal with that any more. I might try and uninstall and reinstall at some point, but probably not for a while.

I got into NV for the first time recently, during the wait for F4, but ended up with a major problem.
I have been going through Old World Blues. Mad science, strange experiments, and wheels within wheels schemes. what's not to love? However, every time I try and get my brain back, the conversation turns to the things we have seen, and that's where things bug out.
Obviously I have not done enough in the main game, as the conversation gets stuck in a loop about sending Bright and his followers into space, and reactivating Helios One. These are obviously the only things I have done so far that are noteworthy as the conversation goes Bright, Helios, Bright, Helios ad nausium.
Do you actually have to retrieve your brain before leaving the DLC? Because if you do, I may not play it again - especially now I have F4 on my computer to play through.

So you can leave and continue the rest of NV Brainless? I might just try that. I presume you need to just talk to Mobius and get told you can leave, or you have to break one of the forcefields.
However, I'm fully into F4 at the moment, can't wait to actually generate my character tonight. I'm going for a slightly modified version of the one I put up earlier
Str 3 for Armourer - access to base armour mods
Per 3 for Rifleman - increased chance to hit in VATS for 2 handed non-auto
End 2 for Lead Belly - less radiation from food and drink
Cha 2 for Lady Killer/Black Widow - increased damage and dialogue to members of the opposite sex
Int 6 for Science! - access to base energy weapon mods
Agi 6 for Avoidance
Luc 6 for better criticals.
Probably nabbing Science first, then better criticals, then avoidance, rifleman, armourer, LK/BW, then finally Lead Belly. After that will probably spend a few levels increasing Per, Str, And and Cha. I'll see what happens after that depending on what happens in-game.

Did anybody manage to score a bottle of Nuka Cola Quantum from Target? I have the day off today and thought I'd drop by the local store to get one. Turns out I needed to be there when they opened yesterday morning to even have a chance at getting one.
Short story version: Target bought the rights to sell the soda (made by Jones Soda Co.) at the release of FO4. You would think it would be the kind of thing they would have cases of, filling the shelf. Turns out, Target, in its infinite wisdom, only supplied about 12-24 bottles per store. With no official limits per customer, and online ordering allowed. And, supposedly, many bottles were bought up by store employees before customers could get to them.
Yeah, Target failed horribly on that promotion.

Probably, it wouldn't make sense for them to take lethal damage, as they just get knocked down instead of dying, so they would just get stuck there. And, in any case, they have health regen, so they should be fine.

Is it one or the other? Which factions are mutually exclusive? Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, how do you recruit more settlers? I've built the radio beacon, powered it up, made sure we have ample supplies of food water and beds.

Spoiler-less tip: Be sure to return to your home and search the baby's room. Be sure to find a very SPECIAL book.
I found that whilst in The Sims mode, and since it didn't do anything in the pre-War intro I just assumed it was a reference prop.
Guess what got immediately trashed.
EDIT: Checked my workshop on the off-chance the game had saved it. It had. Problem solved. Panic over.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
