I am trying to decide if I like fallout 4 or not. I get the impression that is is way more focused on combat now, but I don't know why?

Not sure if it's focused much more on combat, as much as the combat has been refined and stands out more, bringing standard FPS gameplay as more of a legitimate option.

I've actually seen more options for stealth and hacking so far, which is nice.

Smooth talkers and community building are also legit options, and crafters have a wealth of things to play with.

I love how FPS it is now. I was never a fan of VATS and now I only use it to detect mines, and it doesn't hurt my gameplay. I'm actually really looking forward to starting a new character with a gamestyle I haven't tried. As you said, there are so many very fleshed out options that I doubt you'll be forced to play the same way twice.

Yeah, I only use VATS if it's my only way to survive a situation... and for bloatflies and bloodbugs because I just hate those things.

Also, just got an Assassins minigun (+50% dmg vs humans) and a freezing combat shotgun.

Guess I can retire my explosive 10mm and bleeding double barreled shotgun now.

Also, for anyone who likes sneak attack crits. Get the laser rifle sold in diamond city. The weapon shop has it, does 2x dmg on enemies with full health, couple that with a 2,5x sneak attack and you can 1 shot most things for a while.

So, if I never ever played a fallout game before, will I know what's going on or would I be better off starting with an earlier game?

1950s lasted for a lot longer. Nuclear War Apocalypse. You're all caught up.

That's the nice thing about these games. You don't NEED to know anything. You'll get more if you do, like the Children of Atom Church or the Brotherhood of Steel's history, or the Chinese invasion of Anchorage, or where Super Mutants come from, or how deranged Vault-Tec really is... but honestly, that's all just background. You don't NEED to know anything beyond what is right in front of you because it's a whole new city with a whole new set of interactions. The Atom church is now just enemies instead of a group of crazies in the middle of town worshipping an Atom Bomb (from Fallout 3). There are even dialogue paths that question everything since it is your character's first interaction with the Wasteland anyway. Ghouls and Super Mutants are new to him/her just like they would be to you. Want background on them, click that dialogue option and you're set.

There are nods to other games, but they are by no means sequential. Start with whichever one you want. They share no storyline other than the world setting, which all of them explain sufficiently.

To be fair, most of the lore can just be found on wiki's anyway.

on the forum. Obviously

So...is it like FNV in that there is dialogue and plot, or is it more like Borderlands; light on plot and dialogue with lots of guns. Because going by this thread, it seems more like the latter.

Nope, the gunplay just happens to be really good. I'd say the plot and dialogue is better then FNV.

There is SO MUCH dialogue and multiple plotlines to follow, God knows how many sidequests, so much immersion and atmosphere.

The gunplay is much improved, but it's certainly not at the expense of anything else.

Cool.. so is it more open ended like Skyrim with lots of different major quest lines, or more like the witcher 3 where you follow one big story but there's some side gigs along the way?

There's knda one main storyline, but you could consider the faction storylines main plots, so there's about 5-6 of them, as well as the hundreds of sidequests.

I would hesitate to call the FPS parts of the game good; average but at least its better than FO3 but would be my assessment.

Plot wise a lot of the game is pretty light and unremarkable. I have only started on the main quest line though (I've just done the 'memories' bit) and it seems at least interesting (so its already better than FO3). Side quests are almost universally generic (go X and kill Y....), I haven't discovered a generally interesting one yet.

The main selling point in the game, like all games of its ilk, is exploration.

Yes. Each Fallout game contains historical references to past events, factions and player characters in previous Fallout games, but every game is a self contained story with a new character. You can quite easily play Fallout 2 without playing the original and follow it well enough. But there'll be lots of references, npcs are always talking about the exploits of "The Vault Dweller". If you want more detail, you'd have to play the original game and experience those events live.

Does the game really need that much in terms of hardware?
I had a look at the requirements, and they seem pretty high for what it gives you.

It's badly optimized. A lot of people get random FPS drops and low FPS despite having a high-end machine.

While I am enjoying the game so far, I am extremely unlucky when it comes to the special weapons that the legendary NPCs drop. I have about a dozen in my stash at the Red Rocket, but none of them besides the one Paladin Danse gave me is of any real use to me. Ooo, an ability to do lots of extra damage to an enemy while they're at full health....on a flamethrower. Ooo, a nice piece of armor...that reduces damage received while I am sprinting. And so on. Other people seem to get all the cool ones, but apparently RNGesus doesn't like me.

I got a shotgun which does 50% extra limb damage.

Sawed the barrel off and named it Kneecapper

I'm so hyped to play this once my download is done. I was kinda excited for it, but now that it's within my grasp the excitement is really hitting me. I want to do either a sniper that's a little bit of a smooth talker, or a guy that's dumb as a brick, but hits like one too. . I did the latter for Fallout One, and had a ton of fun with fist fighting rad scorpions in the wasteland. Might do the former, just because I think it'd be cool to have the dog with me, like a spotter of sorts, instead of "Bite mean man, doggy!"

Great for role players.

Rolling pin + Pre-war dress + 1950's hairstyle = post-apocalyptic Desperate Housewife.

Come to think of it...I want a frigging rolling pin now. Where can I find one?

The only good one I got so far was my first: Once you reach 20% or less Health, you enter in "Legendary Slow-mo".

Yes, my pistolier / sniper becomes Max Payne once she gets low enough on health. It's perfect
