Subject: Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge 5: July 2015: Sneaky!
Welcome to July's Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge. For those who aren't familliar, this is a no-prize-related challenge open to any and all painters and hobbyists. Anyone can enter, from a newcomer to the hobby with your first box of minis to a multiple-time Golden Demon champion, and the winner each month will be decided by community poll, not just on the paintwork but on the effort, creativity and awesomeness of the finished piece!
For this month, the theme is: Sneaky
For example, this includes:
Any kind of model described in its rules or background as stealthy, sneaky or subtle
Any model with weapons or equipment suited to stealth, such as a camouflage cloak, knife or sniper rifle ect.
Any model in a crouchinh/crawling pose
Just a heads up, the rules for Proof Pictures have been updated/clarified to prevent confusion. See below for details.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or baedcoated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be elligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins Wednesday 1st July and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st July. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Okay, will I manage to finish this time, to a standard I like, and without forgetting some small but essential thing? personally, I doubt it

PROOF
Not that I know anything about WWII (problems of being a Spaniard, as we didn't enter WWII in our history classes we get double ration of Civil War misery and Post-War misery) but those guys sure look sweet, and they will be wearing camo so I'd say they fit the contest, but if they don't I also have a Sniper Team that will.

Something a little different for me this month. I'm running a narrative X-wing campaign, and I need a couple of sneaky models for scenarios.
For the Imperial's, Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator. The Scimitar. It's fitted with a cloaking device, a la the Phantom.
(Actually a Revel pocketkit model at the same scale as X-wing)
Proof pics -
The rebels, to give them a fighting chance, will be getting a stealth-X reconnaissance ship. This will just be a repaint of a standard X-wing.
Assuming I get the time to straighten out the guns, and get them primed, and then painted, some or all of these guys are going to be my entry for this month. If the weather doesn’t line up with my desire to break out the rattle can and prime, I might fall back to an old metal SM scout sarge that’s already in the paint queue. But frankly, I need to get more Eldar finished, so would like to bang out the squad of pointy eared sneaks.
Would a Deathwatch Captain count? He won't be particularly blinged out, but will be in a running pose. AFAIK the Deathwatch's operations tend to involve being pretty stealthy.
Deciding if I want to finish my Broodlord and a few Genestealers, or go with another Mawloc. Might go with the Genestealers cause they will be easier to finish.

If not I'll try to think of something else.
Certainly. Considering DW are basically SM black ops, he fits fine!

@buttery - It is tough isn't it? I voted stealthy and have a safety plan of space marine scouts which I would love to do something cool with the snipers with Gilli (I think that's right) suits, but am wondering about finally starting to paint some Tau and some XV-25s so could do the normal red and black Farsight scheme I want. But as this is a challenge, try new techniques etc, I'm wondering about trying an effect I've seen involving a spreading camo shield effect. Hence my hesitancy to choose. I will research and decide over next few days.
On a side note to everyone, the 15th League of Extraordinary riveters has judge started here on Dakka. Brief is to make a terrain piece in the theme of Trapdoor. Come join in (maybe make something you can utilise for a future dio???)

I agree, I'm painting up only 2nd edition Tyranids because I love the new stuff, but never paint my original minis. They would be feasible to field as a current force and I have bent slightly and bought two brood lords, but everything else is from back in the day

I'm in with my Dark Angels Sniper Scouts. Here's my proof:
Okay, the pic did not come out well, but all it needs to be is proof that the guys are unpainted, right?
And yes, I just got my Reclusiam Edition Dark Angels codex in the mail today (finally!) and I just had to get it in the shot somehow!
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

I didn't mean that as a complaint by any means, I was just curious! I voted for something else (can't remember what) because my only "stealthy" figures would be Gaunts Ghosts and I simply don't know if I have time to paint that command set in a month... Alongside the 75 other Tanith id feel obliged to do at the same time.
"My diorama base is made of stacked unpainted lead and the tears of fatigue."
I was starting to put together a load of bits to make a squad of the Tanith first and only before I entered Mays competition. Stealth seems like a good excuse to revisit them and get them all together.
I'm in Norway next week but will hopefully get a proof pick up before then

Oh whoops did my tone seem defensive, wasn't meant to be. I was agreeing, stealth seemed like a good idea at the time to paint up some of what I've got in the cupboard, but now can't decide how to go about doing it

I know it's only a small one, but will not have much time this month. So I will be doing a Yu Jing ninja, and hopefully making it a little more interesting than just painting it black!

Literally every one of these painting comps has been something I have in parts on my desk, and every time something has managed to completely derail me.
IS THIS THE ONE I FINALLY GET FINISHED? I am doing some urbancam ultramarine scouts in a land speeder storm - but I did just have a new box of awesome land on my desk thanks to BC, so will probably get side tracked again...

Would I be able to enter this model for this month's painting challenge?
I ask because I do not intend to prime and completely re-paint the model - and it has come base-coated in more than one colour.
I intend to repaint everything but the shirt and skin - because I do not have a skin-coloured paint as good as the paint on the model, and my painting skills aren't up to the task of re-painting the bat-symbol and eyes. However, I do intend to repaint the lower body, belt, and gloves, and wash and highlight everything.
Also, does anyone mind if I post step-by-step WIPs for advice as I paint? I feel like I've hit a block, and my painting isn't improving all that much - of course, it could just be a process that takes a few years, instead of a few months!
