Point me to a single guide I mentioned that is any way wrong? Even the two taking a dig at BL's HH series are true.

I never said you were wrong :p

I was simply pointing out that there is a difference between constructive criticism and sarcastic jabs

Absolutely. Assuming that the company I was doing it for was genuinely interested in turning their image around, the challenge of actually making that stick would be kind of awesome to take on.

But that would be going into it knowing full well that initial attempts to engage with the community were going to be met with the cynicism that the company had just spent the last decade fostering. One attempt to encourage communication isn't going to suddenly erase the ill-will generated by their previous actions.

Spot on.

When you have years and years of not interacting with your customer base in any way whatsoever, not listening to any feedback (or perhaps more importantly, coming across that you don't give a damn) then the first work of this type is going to be the equivalent of lancing a particularly nasty, pus-filled zit as all of that pent-up consternation comes through at once.

But, it's a door that surely had to be opened at some point. Hopefully it will herald the start of a new move to interact with customers

Which has not one single thing to do with this thread or its immediate detour off the nearest cliff that it took.

This seems to be the channel for their painting guides. So, they are having their own separate one from the GW/BL one like last year.

Not that the one last year was particularly good, but, y'know.

Didn't you hear? Games Workshop is going to be voted the best Tabletop Gaming company, for their great rules writing, solid community interaction, and affordable models!

Glad to see Emma doing well -- she's a good painter indeed, her harlequin stuff especially is very nice.

best of luck to her/them.

Um.. WHAT? Kid_K's commentary is some of the best on this, or any, thread. You may or may not agree with him, but little from him is "garbage." Only reason i clicked on this thread again was to see if anyone could compete with his or Insaniak's hilarious comments.

The sarcasm is strong in this thread

To be honest I see nothing negative to point out here, its a normal company interaction with its clients and could provide good results.

I actually like GW tutorials.

Not really. He does raise a valid point, though. While it's fun to give GW a verbal bashing now and again, a thread like this is hardly worth the effort.

I think it's QUITE worth the effort. A company that routinely ignores and abuses its customers wants US to generate content FOR THEM. They're just asking to be trolled by doing that. Maybe if they can affect a thick skin and take the harsh (though humorous criticism) with grace, maybe they can begin to win back some of the goodwill they've squandered over the years. And their next such effort won't engender such hostility.

But expecting people who you have done nothing but poop on for years to be super sweet and give you their labor for free with a cheery smile is ludicrous. People WANT to do this kind of thing - they WANT to be involved. It's on GW for crushing that in some extremely disrespectful ways over the years. It's on THEM to rebuild our trust.

This could be a step in that direction, and I hope it is. But I'm afraid that it's just them being lazy, and farming out content, rather than actively engaging a community they've done nothing but marginalize and ridicule for years.

I am partial to agree with angelofvengeance. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of threads on this very forum where GW gets a verbal bashing after bashing (deserved and otherwise). Do we really think that the ONE thread that may contain a glimmer of hope that they might be changing their ways....is THAT the place to bash them? I am inclined to think not.

As I said previously, and may have been misunderstood, I am not saying the harsh criticism is undeserved, nor do I think they should not expect it. But if this is really GW maybe taking a step in the right direction, there are more effective ways of framing our criticism than sarcastic jabs that may be easily dismissed as the 'vocal minority' we've heard so much about.

Plus I can't help but shed a tear for the guys and girls actually manning that e-mail account

Right, because all of the smaller game companies, who actually do market research and pay attention to their customers, who are experiencing unprecedented growth, are clearly setting themselves up for failure.

Do their tutorials really even matter? I guess the GW painting style isn't a bad place to start if you're a newbie and want a very simple approach to painting, but it's not like GW's official tutorials are the only place to get that kind of information.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Seriously though to play devil's advocate: GW deserves a lot of the criticism it gets but have we stopped to consider that they ignore us because when they take a tiny, small baby step in the right direction like this, we (the community in general) break that baby foot?

What they need to do is reopen their Facebook and Twitter pages.

If other companies can ride out their digital gak storms so can GW.
GW need to get with the program, learn to take critisism and become a better company.
