Did some more work on my Magewrath Throne (aka now to be known as "Skullz")

^^ the base ala pink insulation foam, great stuff

^^ how it looks initially with the skullz on it; also painted the base brown after using gesso to prime it, not very exciting shot tho lol

And here's the start of my son's Frostgrave terrain/diorama/display base for his warband:

^^ it's going to be a ruined Library, I've yet to make the books, bookcases etc.

And here's my first attempt at making flock, quite pleased with how it came out, there's a bit of uncoloured sawdust still in it, but not too bad:

Some fantastic looking Necrons and Luna Wolves! I love that pattern of dread as well it looks sharp with the rest of the SM you got there!

I will be following this show!

Cheers!

Thanks

I am working on making vegetation (vines) for my terrain atm, but I realized I'd also forgotten to post the pics of the minis I think I'm doing for the Wyrd IP (to go with the Frostgrave Terrain above, and my son's warband).

So 'ere they are ^_^

arms are actually on now, figures are primed... just really need to get paint on 'em.

They are Darksword miniatures, by the by, from their anthropomorphic collection. Great service from them, very quick! Also excellent sculpts and not very much flash/mold lines.

Nice work on the Luna Wolves and terrain. Needs more paint though

More WIP on my skull tower (Magewrath throne piece): painting is really done, but I'm working on adding vegetation atm (because apparently I can't just keep anything simple lol)

First time I've tried to do trees ... not totally happy with them, but they are starting to look better (will get pic up, of current state, when flocking is dry)

Also did a test fit so to speak of stuff for my son's Frostgrave terrain/display board and his warband, it's based on a ruined library:

working on the base for my Manufactorum now! The kit itself is complete but I want to add a modular sort of base. The main piece will have a crater, inside the back building, the edge of the whole pink foam will be beveled down to make the Manufactorum stand on a hill of sorts. The front piece of the manufactorum, which isn't attached, will be able to be removed from the base, either for access or to give us more terrain options.

some of my WIP stuffs:

My son's Triarch ^^ (and it's driving me nuts it has the improper number of legs but oh well)

Started hubby's Perdita crew last night ^^ omg such little parts, so glad my tiny tiny drills came in, already lost an arm off perdita just taking this shot!

^^ Not really looking forward to putting Nino together lol Still, I'm consoling myself that it's not more gremlins!!

Did this up really quickly, don't like the blue. I'm going to repaint it in green I think, which will go better with the gold I think. First time I used rub n buff on the top bit, was interesting.

Aaaaaand per usual I may have gone a bit overboard...

spent last night constructing 11 more boyz from ebay bits and spare parts, plus a few gretchin and some nobz from leftover bits of a box of the new ironjawz. Got some pretty good mileage from that box tbh even tho it was expensive. Also, I have a couple of weirdly shaped legs I got from some bitz exchange, they look like they'd make good riders, so I may try to make a couple more bikes to add to my 3 ebay purchases.

Scraped more paint off my ork trukk bitz and chucked them back into the simple green to try to get the rest off. Someone took "red paint" a little too seriously and had an ungodly amount of red paint and super glue on these. Tooth brush be damned I'm about to get a wire brush ><

I've found those kind of things to be hit and miss. I have a few; one is rubbish (may be a duff pot as it doesn't seem to dry properly and makes no difference when buffed), one is ok, and one is brilliant. All Humbrol. *shrugs*

Best results come from a really smooth basecoat, smooth application of the paint, being patient to leave it long enough that you don't rub it off, and then a good buffing.

Yeah... patience... haha oh dear, that was a fun time indeed, although at least it does come off your hands eventually, I really should have worn gloves, I'm notoriously bad about getting paint/glue/stuff all over me.

Any advice on sealing btw? I usually use a liquitex matte varnish but I'm wondering if it'll take any of the rub n buff off, if I get it wet?

Also, I forgot to post these:

^^ It's painted anyway, but I can't help looking at it and wanting to add stuff to it, so I think I'll be putting moss on the rocks and a few other things likely.

Also, painted. But I'm adding a base to it, to make a crater, and allow me to keep one of the pieces of the building on the base, while still removing the other, in case we want to set it up differently. Plus, rubble. It needs rubble.

Otherwise, I'm just working on basecoating my orks, hubby's Guild stuff for Malifaux and probably a half dozen other projects so I don't get bored lol

As is often said; "Don't wear anything while painting, that you don't mind getting paint on"

It will depend on the type of paint you are using. I've found with my Humbrol Metalcote paints (the rub'n'buff type) can be removed easily if I try and brush a varnish over them. The solvent in my paints/varnish will dissolve the Metalcote, even once as dry as they will ever get.

However, you shouldn't have a problem if either your rub'n'buff or varnish is water-based:
Acrylics tend to cure to a point that they can't be re-solvated and/or a water-based varnish is not going to dissolve a solvent-based rub'n'buff.

However, the varnish will affect the finish (as they do to any paint), and not just as a matt vs. gloss, they will darken them slightly.

Spraying on the varnish is probably the best bet anyway.
Although, it can also be argued that leaving the rub'n'buff paint unsealed is best. So long as it's thick enough and tough enough to not be worn off completely, it's only going to get shiner the more "wear" it gets. thereby looking even more realistic.

Sorry lost this thread a bit! I get quite sidetracked easily, as is probably readily apparent.

Those trees are the Citadel Wood kit - which I believe they've now called something slightly different due to the new tree stuff in AoS Sylvanth? I can't spell it sorry!

I really wanted to do each leaf invidually but realized that wasn't feasible, for one thing, and for another, autumn leaves don't tend to be a single colour anyway! So I decided to base a dark green or brown and then use yellow, a more rusty red (it's a vallejo colour red leather I think) and try to keep them random. I just kind of held the end of the paint brush and bopped the top of the foliage with it, to help it stay random lol Although I did do a few places deliberately as well to break up accidental patterns. Because humans love their patterns, even unconsciously. And I overlapped the colours a bit as well, as like I said most autumn leaves have more than one colour. Obviously not all of them, which is why I left a lot the green/brown as well.

From a distance it looks really good, which is pretty much the range of the picture I think. Up close it starts to break down, but that's par for the course really.

also @Dr H - I kind of like that idea of leaving the rub n buff to become more shiny as it's handled. I actually think I will do that! At least so long and until it's looking too shiny or whatever, but that could take a good long time. It isn't in an area you really handle a lot I think.

Couple more shots of projects in motion:

And, "Bob" my new HPA - really really love this model, it's just so grotesque and horrific it's cute!! He's going to be an (AoS) friend for Pretty Boy, my other HPA.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Forgot my hubby's Perdita crew (Malifaux, Guild faction) - they're basecoated, eyes aren't done or any fine details, colours are going to be purple and green, with some black and highlighting up to a good bit lighter lilac and light green eventually. Which may take a really long time as we're actually using the models for a game currently lol

Thanks EDC! really hankering to work on him some more but need to try to finish up some of my Ork boyz first - help keeps me motivated then to get through them.

Here they are in their current basecoated state, seems a bit slow atm, but I'm plugging away - soon I'll be cleaning up and highlighting. And probably triple checking for mold lines >< already found a couple I missed. Again. Grrr Death to Moldlines!!!

Thanks I'm trying! Got a child heading off to college after this year, likely, and since I hate playing with unpainted plastic trying to get both our forces done so we can enjoy what time we have before Life happens.

Got the first boys done, including bases - going for a seashore theme, to fit with the pirate idea. It came out ok, I think. A couple things I wish had gone better. I only had one base leak its watereffects so that was good at least. I wish GW didn't use beveled bases, it would make the whole taping it up thing a lot easier. Going to try to add a few extra bits for stuff like the Nobz (driftwood maybe etc).

have a group picture as well but it hasn't uploaded yet

Bob is almost done, need to do details etc, the final touches on metals and such. Skin is finished, although I may go through and touch up a bit. Base is almost done, just needs a bit more work then done.

Little teaser, so to speak, working on what is ending up a Warlord Litter:
