Not where I should be

This is looking like being one of the best comps yet, guess I better pull my finger out.

Well Here we go.....

Take a CD, and a bit of foam.....

Carve up dat foam a bit....

Get some old sprue, and sand it down...

Glue in place to start making the structure...

Grab some ordinary bits...

Start adding some structure to the frame...

And a large tank...

You may also notice the mass production of barrels....

So that is where I am, Thoughts C&C all welcome.

Solderer broke down and I'm all out of time, I'll have to skip out on the rest of this one, unless I miraculously get the money to fix/replace it.

Not where I should be

Sorry to here that, was really looking forward to seeing your stuff.

OK

Progress, slow but progress.

And yes that is a new method for me of riveting, 1mm steel ball bearings, superglued into divots made easily in card stock.(cereal box)...

By sprinkling a little Bicarb onto the surface it sets the glue quick and adds a nice rusty texture around the rivet. I will be trying to do these neater when I try them on Imperial stuff soon.

Okay I've decided to throw my hat in the ring. Through a series of happenstance I just came across some tubes during the week and thought it was a sign to enter the competition. I'm going to order some foam PVC this week for the base off green stuff world, if anyone has any other good shops that ship to the EU let me know.

Below is what I'm going to use, along with some plasticard tubes I have. Ideas so far was to do a sewer exit but I'm afraid I couldn't do it justice, and the other idea was a massive missile embedded in the ground that hadn't gone off, which I'm thinking could be used for a nice objective piece. We'll see where it goes!

I've never done a real terrain piece (I've haf a few aborted attempts) but between my buddy and I getting huge on board the fantasy skirmish train, and having pretty much perfect pieces of “trash” to work with Im gonna give this a good honest try!

Sad to hear, Xjax1. Fingers crossed but if not hope to see you next time.

Good progress, Cam'.

Good work, Alister92. Good on you for detailing the inside, a man after my own heart.

Welcome Carlovonsexron and Boundless08. Plenty of time left.

Keep it up everyone.

I'm done and submitted. Woo.

Cam, nice to see you.
Wait... are those barrel blanks actually just chopped up hot melt glue sticks?

Xjax1, sorry to hear. Keep us posted.

Alister92, I like the concept.
(I'm having trouble seeing your pictures. I'll try again later.)

boundless08, Those are some big tubes. Did you drink that whiskey yourself?

Fantastic work guys, keep plugging away.

So...
Shelves....

Red cans are gas, green are grogg....

And started on a fire bucket ...some sprue clippings and hot glue....

In the spirit of the competition I am using relatively ordinary materials, card etc. with a small cheat on the checker plate. I could go styrene etc, but I don't feel that is in the spirit of the comp.

@ Cleatus um yup sorry really cheating like crazy, sat here the other day and thought need cylindrical rod, and I could glue on the barrel ends and.......hang on....snip, that will do nicely and silly cheap really.

@ Xjax1, hope it works out bud, really want to see how it goes. Good luck sir.

"cheating like crazy"... Like a fox!

I want to take a moment here and give Cam one of these:

That's genius. No, they're not as detailed as say the Tamiya or GW barrels, but you cannot beat the fact that you could make 100's of them from a simple pack of glue sticks. I've made a few barrels from scratch using rolled paper, and I was considering casting... but this is so simple.

Oh yeah, the rest of the build is cool too. Or Hot. Or whatever the kids say these days. Keep up the good work!

Alright I ordered my foam PVC but got a mail yesterday saying that my order will be delayed, won't be shipped till Friday this week so will be a bit longer before I can start on the base for the sewer pipe but while cutting up the tube the bit I was left over with looked promising to use as a collapsed castle turret or watch tower so I'm going to get cracking on that this weekend

Good to hear, Xjax1.

Nice work, Cam'. No such thing as cheating in modelling, so long as you share the wealth (how it's done). Shortcuts help everyone. There's no right and wrong way of doing things, just combinations of better / easier / cheaper.

Never any wastage when you can use it as building materials, Boundless08.

Got around to working on the destroyed castle turret today. I'm pretty happy with it considering it's my first go at making terrain but I've already taken away some things to do for next time. Firstly I should have cut or damaged all the bricks before putting them on like I did with the impact crater on the tower, it's gonna be a bit more awkward to do it now, and I should measure more! The bricks don't look great the way they're laid out but meh, still looks okay. Next gotta do a platform inside with a ladder, maybe do a rough covering with sand and pva glue on the inside as well to make it rough and then just add some detail.

I've also had another idea and instead of making the sewer outlet with the other half of the whiskey bottle tube I was thinking of making the other half of this old watcher tower, the bit that fell off. Collapsed and destroyed on the ground below. Or I could just buy more whiskey and do both Question: Can I only enter one piece? I'm thinking if I do the two parts of the tower I will have them on separate bases as I think it would be too big on one(maybe not though, we'll see when my pvc arrives) but they are complete piece together?

Anyway, here's the progress

and a bit of damage where in my mind I like to think a troll got drunk and hit his head against the tower. I've got to wear down the cardboard yet but I'm still debating whether to break through and make a hole or just scratch it up a bit

Good progress, Boundless08.

The bricks will look fine with some putty/plaster pressed in to fill their rears and give them depth. Then glue some sand in-between them for grouting and the gaps should be good.

Would you by any chance be able to recommend something for filling that? Again, totally new at this so any brand names or something specific will help. Hoping to get the rest done this weekend and start painting it up next week

I have a huge bag of dental plaster, which is what I would have used. (dental stone is stronger/harder than dental plaster, but I'm determined to use this up before buying dental stone, look for that if you're interested) Check my bell tower build for a similar use of plaster.
You would need to be careful with the interaction of plaster with card as the water content can cause warping.

You could also use any epoxy putty. Green stuff would be the first thought for many, but looking for Kneadatite is cheaper and is the same stuff.
However, I would recommend milliput for this as it's clay-like nature would allow you to stuff it in those gaps easier. It's also cheaper than green stuff type putties.

Speaking of clay-like, air-dry clay might also work, but shrinkage could be a problem that'll need solving with a bit more gap filling later. And again, the water involved could cause problems with card.

Edit: Oh yeah, there's also polyfilla if you have an old tub laying about. Not really the cheap option though.

Not where I should be

It's very messy but you could try Caulk, basically polyfilla in a tube. Or some of that light weight filler you get now adays. But really DrH is on the money, dental plaster/stone. Or Milliput.

Awesome stuff guys, thats coming on really great boundless, especially for a first go at this kinda thing.

Wow, that bell tower is indeed awesome and a great example.

I've actually found a local crafts/hobby shop in Dublin that has loads of stuff. I'm going to pick up some milliput anyway and maybe see if they have anything else you mentioned. I have green stuff alright but it didn't seem the right fit.

Thanks everyone, for the pointers and kind words

boundless08, looking good so far. One entry per-person, please. If you have the two pieces on separate bases we'll count it as one entry.

Plenty of time left if people want to enter. Not too late.

Say, why don't we have a rivet Orkmoticon? What would that even look like? I suppose the dice orkmoticons sorta look like rivets:

the long silence of mine is finally over...somehow the last weeks i could only be in any way productive when i remained silent...

speaking of...:

series of tubes...well...the small plastic bags you carry vegetables and other fresh stuff in at the super market are rolled on sturdy cardboard tubes...
these are the foundations of my walkway / pipeline construction...

i am currently beyond riveting the whole lot... only some additional details and i will start panting...

here is te progress so far...:

cardboard tubes, plywood walkways with a special paper that has already a metric ton of holes...dunno how this caardboard is called tho...but for me it looks like paper mesh^^

and riveted...:

(rivets made by using PVA and a syringe and a 1,2 mm cannula...works like a charm...very easy, quick and reliable...and in the current warm weather quickly cured...we´ll see how paint will works with this tho^^)

cheers, vik
