Thanks CB.

First warband looks like I’ll only have 8 models.

L to R: wizard, apprentice, thief, treasure hunter, two archers, 2 infantry persons. 500 gold total. If I make the wizard a summoner or necromancer(which he looks like), then I can paint up some skeletons to start the game with and bring the group up to 10.

Also started throwing some contrast paints and some nighthaunt gloom on the randoms.

The big red guy on larger base will be a major demon to compliment the minor demon.

It's fun seeing your work on some Frostgrave stuff. I was so excited when they gave away the rules that I spent Spring Break feverishly sculpting and crafting a war band, the monsters, and terrain I would need for the single player games. I ran out of time as I kept wanting to make more, and still haven't played. I hope you get to enjoy playing a lot.

Also what's this about 2 garbage bags of projects you're sending to the dump? What kind of projects are you talking about? Are you sure there isn't stuff worth selling in there?

Oh it’s all stuff I made a while ago and my skills are better now, so if I need them I can remake them. Mostly CD terrain pieces and supplies I’d never use. Nothing that I could sell or make enough on to justify wasting time. Lots of cardboard that had been damaged from bad storing of it.

I hope to play Frostgrave sometime, but the local game shop didn’t have any players. Oh well it got me painting. 10 models down so far and others are on their way.

Wraith, zombies and ghouls.

Regular and armored skellies.

Was trying to come up with other monster ideas when I had a brainstorm. I could use the heroes from Zombicide Black Plague and characters from Massive Darkness to make my warband. So now I just need to refigure who’s who and make make my band. Possibly the Monty Python Knights led by Tim the Enchanter, and the killer rabbit as a warhound ..

No, I think that free download is done with unfortunately. But July is looking like the second edition is coming out. Plenty of videos about the game, I’m watching a whole series of them on YouTube by GMG games. It’s really inexpensive for the rules PDF £6.92?https://ospreypublishing.com/frostgrave?___store=osprey_rst&___from_store=osprey_usa if your interested.
Link to current video I’m on https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jbg5dn_hFDI&list=PLzrPO7KIAtwXGKQGgaFqc5V1lu2y2gMne&index=7go to their playlist and hit frostgrave, tons of video.

Trying to find a good place for 3D printer filament. Anyone out there got any experience with it?

I just ordered one 1Kg roll from Walmart.com for $20 delivered. By far the cheapest I could find with delivery. Just going with what my Ender3 will be shipped with. 1.75mm PLA.

Also trying to get DakkaDakka to have a 3D printer forum. If you have a feeling either way I started a thread in the nuts and bolts forum and the Mods are considering it and having a nice conversation.

So early morning again. Lots of hobby cleaning (just making the mess slightly more organized). While doing so I dug through my Zombicide Black Plague and Massive Darkness pledges to create a couple Frostgrave Warbands.

First, the gnome and dwarf alliance.

L to R wizard, apprentice, thug (20), thug (20), Templar (100), infantryman (50), infantryman (50), infantryman (50), warhound (10)
No shooting whatsoever . But a full warband.

Second and absolutely ridiculous warband, also with no shooting

In no particular order. The wizard Tim (probably won’t be an enchanter ), 3 Templars (300), 2 knights (200),
——now, the rabbit....will either be a summoned imp, or possibly trim off the two knights to be the apprentice.
——the black knight....could be a summoned construct, which explains why everything can get chopped off.
——the beast....summoned demon.
This would be a truly elite army, but once again, no shooting.

Off to practice painting and making frozen ruin type basing.

Working on ruined bases with snow effect. Not liking the army painter snow.... so glad I wasted time on a spare base with that.

In the mean time I applied astrogranite debris to all the python bases as well as some monster bases. Then washed all those with Drakenhof Nightshade.

I don’t have long beard grey dry paint, so I used wych elf flesh instead on the rock and base for this frost giant that I have repainted for the 3rd time .

I’ve seen some nice snow effect done with PVA, baking soda and white paint. I guess the white paint keeps the baking soda from turning yellow over time. I guess I’ll buy a new box of baking soda for the house when I go to the store next time and appropriate the old box for experiments.

Also watching videos of Rangers of Shadowsdeep. Looks interesting with being able to play solo, but I think I’ll stay with Frostgrave right now because of the terrain possibilities.

One of the great things about FG is that every wargamer can throw together several warbands just using models they have lying around. It's also a good excuse to pull out single models that don't fit with a unit for another game.

Rangers of Shadow Deep uses essentially the same mechanics as Frostgrave, so you can switch back and forth pretty freely. For me, it scratches the D&D itch without needing to get a bunch of gamers in the same place at the same time.

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!

Painting total as of 4/13/2024: 31 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

You know what they say, third time's the charm Giant is looking good. I'm actually to lazy for the baking soda snow and use the rather expensive Citadel Snow stuff, but am happy with that.

Yeah, I’m really liking the Rangers of Shadows Deep videos I’m watching. Always thought a deck of cards could be useful in a game and I think he has a great idea using them a solid random generators.

Yeah, I’ve meant to purchase the GW snow effect, but now all the stores are closed and I don’t like ordering paints through the mail.

Anyway got basing minus the snow done on the completely painted figs, and repainted the black beast of Argh.

Now to finish off the king, bedevere and Chauncey. Also have another giant and werewolf to paint and three ice spiders as well.

I can't point you in any particular direction, I've not yet had to buy any filament.

Two points I have picked up on with filament though:
When storing your filament, keep it in a dry atmosphere. Some / all(?) filament can absorb moisture from the environment and old/moist stuff doesn't go through printers very well and leads to poor prints. I keep what I have in a sealed box with some dry silica gel. I've not noticed a drop in usability of my filament over the years, but I also haven't tested the alternative...

From what I've heard (although with more evidence) from videos on YT, the quality of your filament is important to the prints.
Good filament can produce adequate quality prints on a cheap-o printer, and excellent prints from a good printer.
Bad filament can lead to bad prints from even the best printer.
What constitutes good or bad filament and if cost can be used as a guide, I don't know.
I was left with the feeling of "you have to try a few and see what works" maybe guided by customer feedback.

Thanks guys, the Quest for the Holy Grail has brought the gang to Frostgrave. I will have to make some custom tokens for clues and treasures. Possibly a pile of coconuts with a swallow that is collecting them .

Finished off the bedevere, Chauncey and King Arthur figures. Will go back and possibly do the trim work on their tabards when my fine detail skills feel awake.

Also completed the Blood Rage werewolf (really dislike the sculpt, so rounded blah. Also, also painted up some old 3rd edition Warhammer spiders as frostgrave ice spiders.
.
Still need to do their eyes.

Rangers of Shadows Deep is really striking a chord with me. I’ve watched 8-9 videos now. Same basic rules since it’s by the same game writer, but it’s all about a ranger and his group of adventurers, so magic is really toned down. It can also be played solo or co-operative, the rulebook is being recollected with a new hardbound rulebook out this year. There’s a much wider list of creatures to fight with it as well, but for now I am full going into frostgrave.

Primed a bunch of old terrain. Three of the old Battlemaster towers, most of the terrain from the first hobbit game and 3rd edition Warhammer 40k, buildings.

Done thing s are good things

So like I said, bunch of terrain primed.

And this Giant was repainted for only the second time.

And the ice spiders got their eyes (stegadon scale green). I didn’t want to do black trim on the bases, but they look better on the spiders than the dark grey, so I’ll probably switch them all back to black.

Had to get away from painting table for a bit. Also iPad is about drained. I thought I plugged it in, but forgot and have been listen/watching more videos while I paint.

I played Frostgrave relatively seriously a while back the most recent supplement Perilous Dark introduces solo play rules as well.

He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. These are from CMoN KS Zombicide Black Plague, but there are others that are metal I believe out there with better sculpts. I a man more than happy with these though.

Llamahead wrote:I played Frostgrave relatively seriously a while back the most recent supplement Perilous Dark introduces solo play rules as well.

That’s great to know. The solo play is what I need more than anything.

Spent some time painting this morning before everyone else gets up. Knocked out seven pieces completely (minus snow effect that I’m waiting to see if my local shop has). Really happy with the results.

Also pretty far along with the six columns and the rest of the sarcophagus diorama from the hobbit, just lots I’d books and papers to detail.

One of the core scenarios requires six columns which you must fight to get treasure. I’m thinking about mounting a magnet at the top of all 6 columns and then putting a piece of metal in some treasure chests to put on top. Also thinking of mounting each one to a individual heavier base to help with stability. I just have to get over the fact that they were Kickstarter exclusives.

I don't know if it's still available, but the publisher Osprey Games was giving away the Frostgrave rules, a three episode free solo campaign book called Dark Alchemy, and a free preview of a few missions from Perilous Dark that Llamahead was talking about. You might want to see if you can find it.

Yeah, I snagged all those and it has started this slide down a perilous slope. I just really prefer dead tree format over digital. Looking at ordering all the first edition stuff from Frostgrave . The completionist part of me wants all the things (not counting magazine articles), but what’s holding me back is the silly exchange rate. If I ordered in £ it would cost about $130 after exchange rate, but I have to order in real currency so they want to charge me $166. I know it’s stupid to fight over $36, but there’s times when that’s my budget for a couple months of gaming.

The other bothersome thing is shipping. I would order Rangers of Shadow Deep deluxe edition for $43ish dollars, but not with $20+ shipping on a single book . So far no one stateside has the book that I could see. I have an email in to my LGS to check if they can get it, but since we are still closed due to the virus it will be a while till I hear anything.

Don’t get me started on Ghost Archipelago either . Miniaturemarket has one of the books in stock, a couple others are out of stock, but they dropped the main book because it was on backorder for so long. When I called them to check they hadn’t realized they dropped the core book by accident.

Now that I’m being productive with painting/repainting, I need to go back and get a tally going, I feel like a dork for not having kept track.

Thanks Graven. The sculpt has always been great. My color choices previously were not.

Thanks to Syro and Osprey having issues with downloads at the time. I forgot but got reminded I have Dark Alchemy , I just need to print it out.

Also since I’ve been lazy and haven’t been keeping track of my painting I did a quick count and came up with 69 models so far that I’m sure of along with Glottkin. Many have been in the past week or two. I’ll did through my own thread here a bit later to see if there are others that I’ve forgotten, but I’m good with that number as of now. I also have a bunch unfinished (did all the skin on the nurgle guys and have some more terrain base coated), but I should finish a few more here shortly. The race is on.

Edit: just went and ordered all the Frostgrave Books, guess I’m all in now.

Osprey is doing a 30% off print books for the month. Couldn’t pass that up. Ebooks are I think 40%.

7 more pieces done.

That’s 76 plus the Glottkin. Not sure how many he counts as...he’s big.

Edit again: didn’t realize my Khorne guys started off the year, I’ll need to adjust my count up a bit when I go downstairs next.

That’s but what this big push is for also. Painting up the warband, terrain and beasts so I can play when the book starts get here. First week of my 13 week furlough is done, twelve to go . Hopefully I’ll be back before then, but I’m not planning on it.

We are celebrating mother’s day here in the US on Sunday, today the nursing home for my wife’s grandmother has invited all family to come and do a car parade around the building. Decorate the car with “Happy Mothers Day” or whatever and they will assist all the people to their windows to see the outpouring of love. Might not be as good as a hug or face to face, but we all know it’s to keep them protected. Afterwards we will be driving by our moms house to do much the same.

Got emails last night letting me know my Ender3 should arrive this week. Also have an extra roll of filament coming as well. Hopefully the Frostgrave books won’t be too far behind, but I also ordered the PDFs of the small expansions that didn’t have physical books (sellsword, Perilous dark, Arcane Locations, Hunt for the Golem) so that’s enough Content to keep me busy till the books arrive.

In the mean time I have enough quick projects to drive me batty .

8 hero quest bats, from the same box of critters as the spiders I showed recently.

And more Hobbit and Dungeon Saga Quest for the Dwarf Kings toilet paper.

I’ll also be figuring out another warband using Green Horde and Black Plague miniatures.

13 Khorne guys (counting the juggernaut riders as two models) brings me to 89 for the year. I’ve been more productive than I thought. I plan on crushing 400 by the end of year as this furlough is allowing me lots of paint time.

Peace out, stay safe.
