Hi Everybody! (Feel free to impersonate Dr Nick )

While I was matching up colours for the INSTAR paint range today, I realised that I may be matching up and producing colours from the GW/Citadel range that many painters don't use a lot of, while this won't be so much of a problem with the paint being available in 10ml bottles for those paints that you guys don't use that often (Of any colour I should add!) I feel that I may be producing too large a quantity of these shades which will end up eventually drying out and being wasted.

So my question to you all is to list what colours you use the most of on a fairly regular basis or which colours I should put more emphasis on producing in the lead up to the product launching. I can then compile a list of the most used or most common colours and spend more time getting these colours matched up and produced for launch day.

I should stress that these colours (Any!) will be available in 10ml, 20ml, 50ml and 100ml sizes when the product launches!

Outer Space, Apparently

It's pretty hard to say which colours people use most as even the basic core colours will vary massively between people doing different schemes. Unless you're talking about browns and greys, which can find their way into almost any colour scheme thanks to leather/sigils, you'll have a hard time working out which to start with.

Personally I use a lot of Rhinox Hide for dark brown leather, and Celestra Grey as a base for the pinstripes I apply to my Ork Freebooterz.

I checked out your original thread, by the way. Personally I've only bought about 3 replacement pots of Citadel paint in all my time painting, so quantity has never been an issue. The issue has always been the complexity of colour schemes, which can't really be remedied with a new paint range. Wish you the best of luck regardless in getting it out there and selling

I think a strong option would be to start with the basic armour colours of the major factions from various ranges. ie.

An Ultramarine Blue alternative
A Dark Angel green alternative
A Space Wolf grey alternative
A gold metallic (for those Stormcasts)
A Death Guard green alternative
A Blood Angels Red alternative

etc. The base colours for the popular armies would be a good start.

You could also look at the GW line of sprays and produce bottles to touch up any of those spray cans (which pretty much mirror the list I put up top). People like to spray armies, particularly marines but they need touch up paint for fixes and painting small details and additional stuff.

It'd be interesting to know what you do use as Vallejo and Army painter are next on the matching list.

A gold metallic (for those Stormcasts)

Metallics are a pain in the a$$ to create, but i've had some luck so far but that will be in another post.

Thank you very much!

Top of the list, VMA Metalics 100% the best

after that its German Grey (one of the best dark greys)

VMA Burnt umber. i like it because its translucent

VMC Hull red. a super nice brown red.

VGC Leather brown. pretty classic.

Also my personally favorite off white deck tan, ivory and a surprising good color for highlighting yellow ice yellow.

Leadbelcher. by far.

Waaagh green - because, right now, I'm painting orks. When I'm done I prolly won't use it nearly as much.

My other main stays are from other lines (Like Vallejo black. You simply cannot get a better, well covering, matte black)

I think i'm getting closer with Leadbelcher, just need to try a newer set of variables.

and Waaagh Green has already been matched so will be readily available on launch day

I am looking forward to getting these colours matched as these (if I'm correct) were based upon the original GW colours which I personally preferred using...until I started making my own that is

I predominately use Vallejo paints (VGC and VMA usually) with a few really nice P3 paints which I like.

However, for reds, I can't look past GW (and my Blood Angel Successors get through quite a lot of red).
Khorne Red and Mephiston Red are both great. Love them. Much better than any I've found throughout Vallejo's ranges.

The same could be said of GW's yellows, oranges and bolder greens, although I use them far less often.

And washes... Agrax Earthshade sees a loooot of use, Nuln Oil as well. The other GW washes also see use, but to a lesser extent.

GW-wise, I've also started using a bit of Baneblade Brown and Karak Stone, both of which I like.

I second Leadbelcher, any time I need silver I do a base coat with this first. Rhinox Hide and Mournfang Brown are my standard browns, XV-88 and Zamesi Desert for sandy tones, Waaagh Green and Castellan Green are my go-to base greens, and Khorne Red and Mephiston Reds my "standard reds". Also use Macragge Blue as a base for darker blues and Mechanicus Standard Grey for most grey things.

In terms of volume I've gone through several pots of Waaagh Green, Castellan Green, Mephiston Red and Leadbelcher. Numerous pots of Mournfang Brown, XV-88 and Zamesi Desert, probably because I use them for basing and scenery a lot as well. I'd definitely buy a select few colours in large pots, particularly for scenery purposes.

And like others have also mentioned, brown and black washes are a must.

Good luck with your project!

If you could make an equivalent for the old GW Scab Red you'd be laughing. It's a purplish dark red, but not a burgundy or maroon, the likes of which does not seem to exist in any range.

The darkest of the current GW reds, Khorne, isn't as dark and is much more orange.

Otherwise, as someone who paints a lot of white,

Vallejo Game Colour Stonewall Grey and Ghosty Grey are high on my list of most-used, as is Vallejo Model Colour White, which is the most vibrant white on the market imo.

Interesting, I'll have to keep an eye out for one of these. If anyone has some old dried paints i'd be happy to take them off your hands

Currently I have Mournfang Brown, XV-88, Waaagh Green and Castellen Green matched up, I do need to do some more reds though!

GW-wise, I've also started using a bit of Baneblade Brown and Karak Stone, both of which I like.

Karak Stone is another that is on the list of already matched colours

Thinking in retrospect, if you could ever replicate GW's old Terracotta paint, you'd earn the eternal love of an Au'taal collector.

I have no idea if that was a popular colour though...

Ushabti bone. It's a handy highlight color especially if you're doing historical stuff. The washes are obvious ones. Their metallics are better than any other brand I've tried. Fenrisian Grey is a great highlight color for black too.

Just a small selection

Many of you are listing old GW colours that are not that readily available anymore, if anyone has any old pots of these colours, it doesn't matter if they have dried out and you don't mind sending them to me then I could create a new collection based on colours from the past in the handy dropper bottles which will be featured in an upcoming post.

Washes. if there is one thing i use the moust of it is washes and glazes.
Washes is the fastest and best way to get decent results.
1 layer of pigment heavy basecoat, 1 solid wash and your done. dont even need to undercoat the models.

Allso it is about time some1 make a light grey wash for white shading.

If I can figure it out, I might be able to supply this line but for now the focus is mostly on paint for the moment, but it's an avenue I wish to explore

This is where my paint line comes into its own, model paint in larger quantities than the major brands at competitive prices

I use a lot of Caliban Green. Of course I play Dark Angels so...

I also use a fair amount of Leadbelcher and Zandri Dust, plus some Mephiston Red. And like probably anyone else who uses GW paints, I do go through a fair amount of Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil.

Looks like a mix across the board, all the base colours should be matched up by the end of september/early october, hopefully including the mettalics!

Once the layer paints are matched, it'll be time to launch them

As for the washes, once I figure out how they are constructed, I can get around to matching them up
