Sadly the new chaos warriors seem one of the losers in the new book. The change to two weapon warriors (reroll all misses) make them much more desirable than shields, and several of those shields are very much moulded onto the body

Plus honestly? I'm not sure if warriors are a good way to go in general. For the point cost, trying to combine hammer and anvil in a slow unit may not be a thing this book does well.

There are a lot of cheaper, faster options that bring attacks and cheaper tank units (Iron Golems spring to mind). They don't combine everything in one package, but for points and utility, I think some serious analysis needs to be done.

FYI, the new versions of warscrolls seem to be up on the store in the downloads section for each thing. (Barring the stuff that isn't in the store yet)

Vigo. Spain.

A shame you can't give marks to those monsters.

And also a Shame that all the options I have built, Varanguard with lances, Knights with Lances and Chaos Warriors with sword and shield are now the clearly worse options

Sword and board is still really good. The main counter to units with 4+ rerollable saves is MWs, shields cancel a third of them. Dual weapons at re-roll 1s weren't worth taking, doubly so since it is so easy for StD's to be getting that from something else already.

Interested in seeing all the rules for the Despoilers. I have a lot of of WHFB Monsters & DPs lying around, could be a fun & easy project for me if the crunch is enjoyable to play with.

It still hurts me greatly with how many points Archaon is now. I’m not sure he’s worth that much at all, even with the rule rewords and things.

I’d wait and see.
He’s always been a huge force multiplier on top of being a beat stick.
I’d say there will be a lot of synergy with rules in the new book that also works with him, so they may have factored that in to it already.

It looks like he's pointed with the assumption you take him in the Everchosen sub-faction, where he is notably stronger. Which is really the most fair way to do it.

Played against a game yesterday with an opponent that had a bunch of sword and board warriors.

They are an incredible anvil unit now. With Oraculur visions they are VERY hard to shift. They don't deal a lot of damage, but are probably one of the best anvil units in the game now.

Sorcerer lord on Manticore is also nuts now. The new spell is great, and the Manticore is a beast in combat now.

Why do I want to play a host of Nurgle (Varanguard) knights with armoured sergeants-at-arms (warriors with shields) and men-at-arms (barbs) again? With a brother-sister duo of sorc on steed and champ on steed as the leaders?! Where my 1000 points list doesn't work anymore points-wise and the sorc has gone poof?

Ordered a SC, a box of Unmade (for my pirate/Viking/reaver Nurglers) and a box of Splintered Fangs. I doubt that they'll get here this year - or before hard Brexit, yikes - so I might have to buy another SC locally for ten €€€ more and...use the other as a gift?

PS: Manticore, good?! I might have to convert one now, those damn ugly (Trish?) sculpts :/

Looking for a Skaven Doomwheel banner to repair my Nurgle knights.

The new rules for it actually make it pretty decent.
But I agree on the sculpt, it really isn’t great by any standards lol.
I’m pretty sure the beasts of war one is still about, which looks far better IMO.

As opposed to anvil & pillow?

Speaking of big monsters like the manticore, whatever happened to the chimera?

The model still exists and they still sell it on the webstore, but as far as I can tell, it didn't end up in any of the chaos books. Is it effectively warcry only now, due to lack of points anywhere?

The Chimera is a Beasts of Chaos unit these days.

Yeah, I wasn't sure that was current, since it doesn't actually show up in the Beasts section of the website.

Thanks though- I tracked down a video that showed the table of contents and its there.

For some reason GW keeps this "creatures of Chaos" tab in the chaos listings even though the models in it are either in Slaves to Darkness or Beasts of Chaos.

And yeah the Chimera appears missing - I think possibly because whoever did the tags likely put it in Warcry and forgot about its regular listing (we've had that before - I honestly think whoever does tags for the website isn't a gamer or at least doesn't know the system that well or gets odd requests from management)

Yeah, and the chimera isn't in there, either.

The only list it shows up in is Warcry's 'chaotic beasts' (which aren't entirely, as the arachnarok, hydra and terrorgheist are in there) so either that or a search is the only way to find it.

GW has a few odds and ends they need to tidy up in the webstore. It isn't the first time I've come across things that don't show up where they should.

The webstore is kinda bad and has been since kirby gave the multi million dollar job designing it to his wife with her gym trainer experience.

Yeah though its honestly hard to tell if its the software or the staff updating it where the problem is. Slambo is also missing and yet is still for sale if you search for him.

And yeah that whole website fiasco was shocking how much they paid for it. Then again at least they have a store cart whilst Epic Store still has a cart on their "sometime in the future" list for development and last I checked hasn't even got Wishlists yet (all super basic things you can get off any bog standard storefront software on the market). So money isn't everything

I’m sure I’d seen them mention that the 40k open day was the last preview of the year.
Though I suppose that could have meant last 40k one and not overall, but..

You do realize that the New Year Open Day occurs next year?

Hence me agreeing with you, but thanks for the attitude anyway

GW posted an article about making a StD army out of a warcry collection... It is literally taking one of everything and tossing in minimum battleline with a couple characters. The list is awful.

It's more a showcase of what you CAN do, rather than what you SHOULD do.

Most people will probably just do blocks of their favorite Warbands and fill out the rest of the list with Warriors, Knights, and/or Chariots.

I could see myself doing a whole Iron Golem themed list so long as the Cultist bands aren't 0-1 choices.

I was thinking about how viable an Iron Golem list would be. Especially thematically. Gorebeast chariots would look good with them (the gorebeast has similar eyeslots, the Fomoroid has the eyepatch (and helmet on his side), etc. Too bad the helmets are generally attached to the torsos, since it would be cool to have the new Chaos Warriors with their helmets. Its still viable, put an expensive buy, just to cut them up for heads.

Iron Golems actually have a save worth having - a lot of the other warbands have a very poor save. Of all the bands I'd say Iron Golems will generally be very popular.

Iron Golems have an obvious role, but others get weirder.

Untamed Beasts and Corvus Cabal are competing for the fast skirmish slot (which honestly is probably better filled by Furies or Marauder Horsemen)

Splintered Fang is solely dice fishing for Mortal Wounds

Unmade are trying to be big units and bog people down and trap them against multiple Nightmare Sickles, since its basically the only cultist weapon worth a fig.

Cypher lords and the new band are kinda meh. They don't bring much, and Cypher's sole trick is a coin flip that may not even happen.

And the big shadow over all of them is marauders are unexpectedly really good: well priced, battleline, and bring more attacks and a slightly better save (except golems), and have ridiculous charge shenanigans (minimum 8" charge always), and can be marked (Which can interact well with various traits for generals, especially in the 'five generals' armies).

Shame the marauder models haven't been replaced.

---

Golems and maybe Fangs and Unmade are the only ones I'd expect to see regularly, because they're the only ones that bring something hard to replicate at a low price point.

Honestly I was all for expecting GW to remove Marauders and replace them with flavoured Warbands. It made perfect sense - so it actually confuses me that GW now has 8 warbands of "not as good as marauders" models which are all both

1) Really superior sculpts

2) Marketed to gamers as the entry way products to chaos through Warcry.

They didn't go LCTB, so they're sticking around (for good or for ill).

The kit is dated, but great for kitbashing.
