As far as CP what are you using it on? We can blow through CP fast, but at 1k points, and with your load out you shouldn't need that much CP. Also, at 1k your force should be dominating with or without CP.
Maybe explain your play style a bit more and that would help? As far as CP regen, there are inquisitors, or Bobby G. But those require separate detachments and aren't always worth it.

The Red Hobbit wrote:Good morning everyone,
I started collecting and painting Custodes during lockdown and have been fortunate enough to play a few games with them in person the last few weeks. I predominantly play 1000pts in my local area.
I've been having a blast with Custodes but this is definitely the most CP hungry army I have played. Any recommendations on ways to recover CP? I normally run Indomitable Constitution but I've been considering using Strategic Mastermind. I've heard Inquisitors and Assassins have CP recovery abilities but I haven't looked too far into those options.
My army is as follows:
Shadowkeepers Custodes (<1000pts)
HQ (-1CP)
Shield Captain on Dawn Eagle Jet Bike
Auric Aquilas, Lockwarden, Indomitable Constitution
Troops
3x Custodian Guard Squad x3 with Storm Shields and Sentinel Blades
Elites
2x Contemptor Achillus Dreadnoughts. Wargear loadouts pushes me up to 993 pts.
That's a cool list. Regarding CP: like you said, Custodes are very CP hungry and you especially feel that at 1000p games. Assassins are more of a style pick nowadays though, they hardly ever make their points back. The only assassin that has seen some fringe competitive play was the Culexus assassin because it has a fight last stratagem that can be really clutch in certain matchups. Even in friendly games, assassins hardly ever feel like they are worth their 100 points.
Assassins can generate CP when they themselves kill an enemy character, but that is easier said than done. Unless you like the models and plan on trying them out as style picks, don't invest in assassins. At least wait until they got some form of updated rules for 9th edition.
Strategic mastermind is the only way a pure custodes list has to recover CP. It can be a feelbad trait when those 5+ just don't want to show up, but most of the time you should generate at least one extra CP with it. Is it better than Indomitable Constitution? In my opinion it depends. In a 1000p game? Probably not, a bike captain with indomitable constitution is virtually unkillable at 1000p and a real menace. At 2000p strategic mastermind becomes an interesting option in my opinion.

Awesome, thanks for the help! My Shield Captain on a Jetbike has actually died in every game I've played him in, but I do have him act very boldly and spearhead most assaults. He's had some unfortunate encounters with C'Tan, Drazhar, the Swarmlord, and Leman Russ divisions so far. I know Superior creation can be very valuable but I really enjoy the Shadowkeepers trait so I've been sticking with that. I've considered the 2CP Blood Games Stratagem that gives a reroll per turn which I would used for Saves, seems quite valuable but it hurts losing 2 CP especially in the 1000pt games I've been playing.

Tbh, a bike captain with 2+/3++/5++ 9W and VotBG is now an auto-take in all my games because he's just great to tie any unit you don't like down. Doesn't matter if he dies as long as you get a few turns of distraction out of him.

That's purely a rumor of a rumor. The images from Warhammer community don't really fill me with any great hope concerning December either. It looks like Emperors Children and another Space Marine Legion, Imperial Fists? Nothing about what they have released screams Custodes.
As far as a LT for Custodes goes, I think it is a dumb idea. Unless is comes with some amazing ability unlike what is already in the game, IE Anti-horde or Anti- MW spam, it serves zero purpose.

What makes you think that? GW already said the December release was a Xenos faction (likely Tyranids) and some Imperial faction (either Guard or Custodes, likely Guard).

I don't think personally these look anything like either Custodes or IG, or Nids. Too cyborgish to me...just my take. Which is what made me think Fulgrim.
Also, all the religious iconography in the Imperial one, makes me think Sisters, or Word Bearers, or Dark Angels. 2 of which have codexes. We know it's an imperial Faction, so what other imperial factions that haven't been released yet are into religious icons and worshiping the Emperor? Not the Custodes.
And the rumor on B&C about the Custodes LT was referencing a rumor that has been going around here. A Custodian that can take a SS and a PF. Ala what 30k already has. People are making rumors that 30k is coming to 40k. I don't see that happening.
As for xenos factions, Orks are coming in September, and then they haven't told us ANYTHING about October. My guess is any of the remaining xenos factions, except Eldar. I think Eldar will get a big fanfare. Could be Tau, or GSC, or Nids.
I have nothing but my own eyes on this. But I will put a pack of unboxed Wardens on the claim that December is EC and a "Not Custodes" imperial force.

Those pictures aren't the factions, they are the generic placeholder art for an Imperium faction and a Xenos faction. The art itself won't tell you anything about who it is specifically.

If they just call it a lieutenant, I'm gonna lose my gak, cause that would be so unfitting. But I agree, right now it's just a rumor.
If it is true I hope that character will be our equivalent of a judiciar, as in having a fight last ability. We desperately need one of those.
Edit: another topic entirely, but I've just recently seen a battle report of the new kill team where one of the players was bringing custodes and oh my.....we really do feel like custodes in the new kill team. Super tough and super deadly, but only about 3-4 models.

Yeah, in Kill team we really marry up with the fluff. Save Primarchs and named DEs like Lilith, there are very few that can match Custodes in small team combat.

Our kill team forces are two "fire teams", each of which is either 2 custodes guard OR 5 sisters of silence. I think you can mix and match the weapons of the sisters.
Ironically, this means that a custodes fire team can often outnumber most astartes kill teams, which are 4-6 strong depending on which type

Theres no quick and easy way to get them. They used to be sold in a box of 10 for a discount, but once that went away they got just a tad bit too pricey for most people to even look at.
i own 5 of the witchseekers, which are unplayable in 40k, but pretty snazzy for killteam.

I'm sure someone will do one if we ever get a Codex, but it's largely unchanged from 8th, if at all.
Telemons are still Auto-include, Tanks are kinda meh now. Allarus are the top Terminators for the cost, and SC on Bike is still our best HQ. Shield and Sword are still our top troop choice.
Most winning lists have been some form of those in combination.

All true, I'd just also add venatari to the list. Imo they are a strong contender for current best custodes unit, maybe tied with the telemon. They are just so flexible and good against....almost anything really.
Oh and I personally couldn't decide on whether allarus or aquilon are the best terminators. Allarus have more stratagem support, aquilon generally hit harder.
Trajann also shouldn't be overlooked. He's in a lot of lists simply because of the free strat once per game is such a powerful ability, especially for custodes (the rerolls 1s to hit and wound aura is nice too).

Rumors of the 30k expansion put its release in November. I think that is a good sign that we will be getting access to at least the new Contemptor weapons loadouts. At least better than if it came out after our codex. Some areas are a "codex only, no FW" mindset, so I welcome the idea of twin autocannons. We really lack in the ranged firepower department, and although not a stellar option, it's at least an option we currently do not have.

We already have a unit with twin ACs, it's called a Caladius Tank, and it's basically useless.
Now if you gave Custodes access to the Contemptors with the dual Grav Flux Bombards, I'm right there.

The arguably best loadout for a Dread in the meta right now is double Volkite. If we get anything, we should want those (unless they nerf it, haha).

I actually love using the twin-illiastus loadout on my tanks, but the -1 damage everywhere does hurt it.
It still puts out 14 medium strength and very acurate shots with AP.
Its an insane marine killer, and quite good against drukahri and admech.

Whatever they decide to give us in the form of Contemptors, I don't ever see it unseating the mini-knight that is our Telemon. FW at least cared enough to give it Custodian level stats and rules. Look to December to see if GW nerfs it into stupidity.

Even if we get our codex in december. The telemon id likely not even going to be in it. I'm pretty sure GW won't change the FW compendium much for the foreseeable future. A new codex won't change the telemon, because I'd be very, very surprised to see any FW options appear in our actual codex.
