Their coming together nicely zahnib, the red on the cloaks is really good!

Thanks guys! I'm pretty happy with the reds, though I can't help but think there may be a simpler way for me to achieve the effect using washes or something similar. But I'm enjoying my current method and its relative slowness.

I've been trying to decide whether to paint the base rims in traditional studio brown or to leave them black. What do y'all think?

I personally prefer black. I think that Brown would look odd with the black base. If you wanted something different maybe a mid-Grey?

Hmmm, I've been thinking black as well, kind of goes with the urban basing theme. Though maybe the brown would give a bit of colour?

zahnib,

Well I like the studio brown for the bases (but I am a bit biased when it comes to Sisters painted in the Order of our Martyred Lady as you can see from my Sister's Log ).

My two cents,

@Captain Brown the brown base rims look great on your (very impressive) sisters force. It works well with the dark earth and grass. I'm a little worried that it'll look out of place with the cityfight-style basing theme I'm going for. I should really just do a test mini. Also welcome to the blog

Progress! I'm still working on the same small batch of sisters, but they are nearing completion. As slow as the batch-painting method has felt it is nice when you get to the final stages and all of a sudden you've got close to a full squad done! You may have noticed the conspicuous lack of bare-headed sisters in my squad, I am still trying to find a good technique for skin so have left those for later.

Until next time,

Coming right along. I get you on the batch painting. Feels like it takes forever, but then BOOM: squad.

@youwasock yes! Its great! I'm thinking maybe I'll do small batches of 5-6 infantry with character in between batches to keep things fresh

@Viterbi and @finol23, thank you both and welcome to the blog!

Another small update. Tried out some muzzle burn on the two sisters with flamers and I'm pretty happy with how it looks! I've also cleaned up the metal and have moved onto the whites! Homestretch now! A whispy fibre also seems to have snuck in on the rightmost sister, time to do some vacuuming I think

Until next time,

Those sisters are rockin! The scorch marks on the flamers came out really well, but those reds!

Thanks everyone!

@gobert I'm quite proud of my reds, haha, though the backs of the miniatures are where they look best, lots of nice deep folds. I'll post some pictures when I've got them all finished up

@Viterbi I followed Duncan's recipe though made do with the paints I had. So I painted the metal parts like normal including highlights, then washed the quarter closest to the end of the barrel with blue ink (I still have a pot of the old Citadel blue ink). Next, I did a purple wash on the second quarter. For this I mixed in a little Blood Red with my blue ink as my purple dried up long ago Finally I washed the third quarter with Seraphim Sepia, leaving the fourth quarter bare.

@youwashock thank you! I've been scouring eBay for some heavy flamer/multi-melta sisters so I can do more!

Soooooo jealous of that FW city fight terrain. That stuff's the dogs bollocks. Too bad it's rarer then hens teeth and worth it's weight in gold.

The sisters are humming along nicely too! Any plans on getting some of the new gals?

Thanks zahnib, will try this out in the near future, I may even have all of the washes here that Duncan used.

Yeah it’s such a bummer that they discontinued it! Such awesome terrain pieces. I have though of making casts so that if people want copies I can help them out as the originals are so hard to come by but I haven’t done any casting before so don’t have the gear. I watched eBay pretty consistently for a few years to hunt down as much cityfight terrain as I could! The administratum entrance was the holy grail for me so I was very excited when I managed to get my hands on one!

I’m not sure if I’ll be picking up any new sisters. I’m unsure how they look wide by side, the new models seem quite a bit bigger and more proportional, similar to the Primaris which I think look a bit odd mixed in with old space marines. But the models are beautiful! I do want to get Canoness Veridyan but I’m not sure how she sits size wise. In terms of vehicles I prefer the old style designs so won’t be picking any of those up.

No worries, let me know how you go! It’s super simple and looks pretty rad I think!

Thanks for stopping by guys

How haven't I commented here already..? Wonderful minis in here, you've got a really good looking Ultra force (loving the Venerable Dread's banner and the bigger urban bases), and likewise I'm liking your Sisters.

My two cents on the basing: I know you're probably set on the gray rubble, but I think bone/white/sandstone rubble could work really well with the Order of Our Martyred Lady, a bit like in the studio version of the Triumph of Saint Katherine. It would provide more contrast to the black armor, and make it look even more black.

Thanks mcmattila, and welcome to the blog! That's a really good suggestion on the basing, I'm currently not quite happy with it as it is all looking a bit dark. I've even been considering going for the standard studio dirt and grass tufts but maybe sandstone rubble is the way to go!

Yippee! My first batch of sisters has been completed! It was really nice to have them all come to completion at once, I think I'll stick with batch painting for the remaining squads. As you'll notice this isn't a full squad and I've actually omitted one of the sisters as she didn't fit in the arrangement for the photo! You may have also noticed in some of my WIP shots that not all of the sisters had their backpacks attached. I thought maybe it would be easier to paint these separately but this was not the case! I've since primed and attached all of the backpacks to my remaining sisters, though sadly two are missing theirs If anyone has some spare backpacks lying around let me know!

In the midst of finishing off the above miniatures I purchased some heavy support: 2 sisters with heavy flamers, 2 sisters with multi-meltas and 1 sister with heavy bolter. These I think I will organise into a Retributor squad, I'm pretty sure I have a spare superior to lead them. I'm looking forward to painting the flame and melta weapons!

Thank you for all the words of encouragement and thanks for looking!
Until next time,

Pretty squad of sisters. Their white masks all look smooth, which is impressive in and of its own, but more so as you started from black underneath! The heat damage on the flamer is cool too

Yeah the old sculpts are great! The new plastic ones are definitely a bit better proportioned but they're missing that old 2nd ed. charm.

Thanks, white is tough! Luckily it is only a small portion of their armour. I was really happy with how the heat damage turned out!

Tis a nice indeed, now onto the next! Thank you, I'm quite happy with how the reds turned out.

That is a very uniform squad. Love it.
It's strange too, because normally i'd look at a unit like this and think that it needs a bold spot colour to help them stand out (e.g: hazard striped flamer fuel canister). But when I look at these girls, I don't think they need it. All the other colours are even and balance each other nicely.

Bonus points for drilling out those metal barrels. Not an easy task when doing one or two let alone a whole bunch.

Thanks Snrub! I feel perhaps the bases need a rework, its all a bit dark with the sister's dark armour and the dark city-fight theme. Haha, and yes drilling out gun barrels are a must!

Thanks howie, they are nice to paint. My old pot of Red Gore is running dry and I'm trying to find a replacement. Does anyone have experience with Vallejo Gory Red, I've read that's very similar to the old Citadel Red Gore.
