Necromunda ships with textured underhive bases and GW is now selling textured 40k and AoS plastic bases (inconveniently packaged with 2 different sizes in the box, thanks guys). Renedra is making them as well.

Since I HATE making flocking bases (flocking bases, I have those flocking bases) I'm in love with these.

Anyone think that textured bases will become the norm? After all if you don't like the pattern it's just as easy to cover up a textured base with flock or whatever as it is to cover a blank one.

I think maybe for certain games, but the major GW games won't change as plain bases allow people to make there own up far more easily compared to bases like Necromunda and Shadespire where sculpted/textured bases make sense.

it does seem more people are moving away from flock towards tufts for main basing schemes or at least that it what i see.

I prefer plain bases as it allows me to choose what basing scheme I want. With GW texture paints it's real easy too.

Textured bases are already rather common. It doesn't seem like a growing trend at all. GW just recently jumped in with their plastics and their overpriced bases.

Resin bases have always been around for the longest time.

There has been a recent influx of laser-cut MDF base toppers.

Even CMON's gummy PVC base inserts have been rather decent had they not completely abandoned their store and made the product virtually unavailable.

Plastic bases have been less common, but some like Champs Industries have been making them for over a decade. Wyrd has recently gotten into it as well, but they cost a lot. GW has had some textured bases on a few of their models, namely the old Eldar War Walker.

If it was the norm, how could they charge you extra for it later? It'll be more commonly available, but it'll remain a premium item.

If I didn’t already so utter hate basing in the first place, I’d replace all my current model bases with the thinnest clear acrylic bases I could find.

Well imagine the time saved trying to make your own textured industrial bases. some of the city ones from GW you could do super quick but others less so.

the mark up is non existent compared to 3rd party resin bases. (you could proabably save a buck if you made your own resin bases which isnt a hard project to do)

also personally love them because of the 3mm wide center post for magnets.

the double boxs does suck though but some armies dont use certain sized bases.

Edit: also as for being the norm.. i dont think so it will always be a side option id hope for those that dont want to do generic sand and flock, 3rd party resin, or diy resin casting bases.

for the broadest reach im sure outside of specialist games it will be plain black bases in the boxes.

I've only seen one set of textures bases from Renedra--I think they're flagstones? I'm buying them up almost as fast as my FLGS can get them in. I hate basing, and I need to buy round bases for my fantasy minis anyway since I hate square bases.

The Champ bases seem a bit pricier than the Renedra bases, but might be worth buying for a limited project. GW's bases are too expensive to buy even when they are plain, so I don't see their textured bases becoming very common unless they are included in kits.

We make 2 things, 25mm industrial bases, 25mm urban bases. And that's it. Any size order, no discounts or packs. I love it.

Reminds my of my favorite bar in New York, they serve 2 drinks, ale dark and ale light.

Outside of themed sets, or game specific basing, I hope that they do not become the norm in kits. What basing would you include in a generic kit like Tactical Marines, Eldar Guardians, Ork Boyz, etc. that would go with most gamers's terrain at home?

Blank bases have a wider applicability and are easier to customize to match what you have at home.

Base every unit on a pile of their own dead.

Or rubble. One of those two.

Textured bases are my new favorite thing in the world.

Desubot can you confirm if the Champ bases take plastic glue?

Hear hear! I do that with my Infinity and Judge Dredd minis. I'm tempted to do it with my Silver Tower and Blackstone Fortress minis, as that way they don't obscure the art on the board sections, but then I'd need to start doing all my 40k and Aos minis too ... At least most of the 40k mins made in the last decade have big enough feet that I'd not need to pin them to the bases.

That'd be awesome, although it's likely another step away from modular kits towards single-pose ones. They seem to be moving that way, regardless - might as well get bases out of it

Love the bases on the Warhammer Underworlds sprues!

Iv only used them for old metal munda and some infinity stuff so not sure about plastic glue. it seems to be styrine or abs. i will try to dig them out and give it a shot with some tamya plastic glue.

I emailed them and Champ says they're styrene, put in an order for 100 for $30+$3 shipping.

High hopes.

Nah, as long as a company has to sell tons of models in different ranges, normal bases will be the standard sold in the box with the kit.

That being said, textured bases have been around a long time, and GW is, if anything, late to the party.

I don't think they'll become the norm for the likes of GW as there are too many armies in the range. In addition, I wouldn't like being given textured bases, I'd rather make my own.

I'm having fun with poker chips anyhow, they're textured without the need for flock!

I do as well and would pay top dollar for sets of bases that are themed like they are. Sewers for Skaven, woods for SCE Vanguard and such. I know they already exist in some form from other vendors, but I prefer to keep it kosher with accessories on my models. I'd be all over a Shattered Dominion style (of which I bought plenty and am saving for a special occasion) set of bases that had a different "realm" theme, rather than the "Azyr/Sigmar Iconography" theme.

But at the same time, I hope to god that they(WHU) are not the future. A lot of those models and (I believe) some of the recent SCE/Nighthaunt easy to build kits have come with bases where they are partially integrated into the textures of the base. Example: Most of the Fyreslayers in Shadespire have their feet built into the base. Great for one-off sets, but not that great for customization, without extensive modification.

I hope that design doesn't become more widespread.

Suspect they may become "normal" for single sprue character models where there is space on the sprue, but otherwise not, though I would expect to see possibly more of them sold as basing packs and to feature more and more in photographs

At least they haven't gone that horrifying clear base route.
God that looks cheap and tacky.

Unfortunately GW seem to be doing everything they can to stop customization and conversion.
So expect more of this.
More monopose.
And more pseudo multipose like necromunda.

Yup, oh my. That page looks like no one updated it for about 15 years (I wrote more complicated and prettier WWW pages in high school...), they fail to mention the size of the bases anywhere on product and shop pages only mentioning it in passing on main page, some pages are missing, and I also like how they try to pretend they have any variety showing a picture of 10 bases rotated everywhere to hide the fact only 4 were unique. And no 33 mm bases? Are they stuck in 2008 their footer suggests? The market for them is now bigger than for 25 mm ones

Yup, GW offering good 20-40 plastic, textured bases for the price of 5 resin ones is suuure overpriced

70 plastic bases or ~13 of closest resin equivalent, gee, the latter sure sounds like a great deal, doesn't it? You might argue GW is expensive, but next to laughable prices of virtually all resin , they look like saints...

LOL I know how you feel, but they replied to my email right away. I should have them in a day or two and will say more then.

I'd imagine they made one mold years ago and that['s the whole business.
