Thanks Kid_Kyoto, I’ve not measured but it hangs over the edge of a Kill Team board, so I’d say about 23-24 inches. I’m hoping the little gaming group we started at work can have a battle royale on it before Christmas

Yeah, the number of times that I do that is not even funny any more! I’m sure you’ll get it to just as good a standard, can’t wait to see the results! Did you keep the teams?
youwashock wrote:Wash or no, it looks great. Can't wait to see your minis milling about.

Cheers youwashock! I’ll be sure to populate it when I finish it off.

I didn’t get much of a chance to do any painting over the weekend, but I did manage to print off the missing doors and hinges. They seem to fit pretty well and are ready for mounting now. The recipe is the same as the Kill Team terrain and the rest of the Fortress; Vallejo dark gunmetal, with Vallejo game effects dry rust, then the orange rust in the recesses. Slight difference on the doors was that I cover the whole thing in dry rust before wiping off excess with a make up sponge. It seemed to work pretty well. I also used Vallejo copper on the skulls with some Nihilakh oxide verdigris. The lights by the door also got some white in the recesses.

Theres barely anything left to do. Hopefully I can get the doors mounted and finished off in the week and maybe even throw some fluorescent paint at the lights. I might even use the airbrush for that as I bought a pair of laptop and monitor arms to get some more space on my desk with the aim of making it less hassle to set up my spray booth.

Also I got a new phone, so the pics might be a bit better, or more likely a bit off whilst I get used to it!

Thanks for looking

PS - what should I put on the door plates? NSEW, ABCD, 1234 or 2468 (my current favourite as there are 8 outposts)

That was the perfect idea. I even went to town and did the diagonals as well!

As well as sticking some decals on the doors and gun ports I stuck the doors in place. As the doorways had been cut and shortened to fit inside the bridges I found they not every door would fit in every opening. Luckily a bit of sanding to get the hinges to sit right and they all found a home. The hinges then needed a bit of tidying and rust adding to the joints

Here you can see both inside and outside of the doors, including the fact that I forgot to add white undercoat to the inside lights!

And a slightly lower shot giving a bit of a view of the decals underneath the gun ports.

Slowly getting there!

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Kid, it’s a real blast from the past for me. I remember building it out of cereal boxes and playing a game of 2nd Edition 40k with my brother. My Catachan Jungle Fighters vs his Space Wolves. Then one of his mate came over and joined in with my Orks who raced their bikes past the fortress shooting at whatever they could! Hopefully the Royale Rumble I’m hoping to organise will be equally memorable!

Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:Beautiful work!

Thanks Gwyn, it’s been a real labour of love

So I finished the fortress this weekend. The lights took a few coats of fluorescent paint and whilst they’re not my best OSL I’m calling them good enough. Here’s the fortress all complete

At youwashocks suggestion I also put some minis on the board. Here’s the Traitor Guard assaulting a Void Panther held Strongpoint Fortress

Plus a few closer pics

This lad is a bit brave, charging a charging Space Marine!

The Tactical Marines of squad Sevastus begin the push to repel the Traitors

The Traitor Guard bring up their flag bearer whilst avoid Panther Devastators rain fire on their enemies

A lone Space Marine attempts to flank the Traitor Guard

This one shows the lights quite nicely

The Void Panthers Devastators command the central tower of their Strongpoint Fortress

And I thought this was a fun little pic

There’s a few more pics in the gallery if you want to see any more pics

Next I’ll probably do some more work on the Space Hulk Terminators. I’ll probably keep breaking my rule of not starting a new project until I’ve finished the current one though. I might do a few Void Panthers, but I also ordered the Provisionally Prepared Ratlings, who will probably jump the queue ready for Brutal and Cunning. I was tempted by the Dark Angels Battleforce to add to my pile of grey Primaris, but my usual shops had all sold out.

Thanks for looking

Syro_ wrote:That beauty is massive!

Yeah, it’s huge, just how I remember the one I built as a kid!

Speaking of massive, my printer had been busy printing a ride for my Traitor Guard. A Chimera didn’t seem sensible to bring to a Blackstone Fortress l, but a Valkyrie makes sense right? Rather than buy one I found a great proxy from nfeyma. His Valravn seemed perfect so I got printing. I soon realised this was much bigger than I expected but I love how it’s turning out! The print is a little rough in places but I can live with it. I’m thinking some sponging like on the fortress will sort it out. I had planned for all the doors to be openable, but I had a few issues that meant the clean up shrank some doors tooo much, the hinges were a bit ropey and the less that’s said about the rear ramp the better! That didn’t put me off painting the inside though and I went a bit crazy with the Fluorescent paints through the airbrush!

Sadly the paint doesn’t glow in the dark

Whilst this was a fun and quick littlw project that’s now fully certified for the Society of Hidden Paint the big challenge is to paint the outside as this thing is MASSIVE!

Spot the tiny Space Marine for scale! As it’s for my Blooded it’ll be mostly greys, and I’m thinking some kind of camo pattern, maybe with purple thrown in. Purple might also be a unit marking stripe too. I’d like to chaos it up a bit as well so might print out some chaos stars and/or the Blooded icon.

Speaking of icons, I have also been printing new measuring gauges for Kill Team. I actually printed one for each of the factions represented in our Kill Team Thursday grouping. I finally got around to painting my factions and a general one

This was another project where I played around with the airbrush. Some colours went on nicely, the Red on the Blooded, the dark purple of the Blooded. The light purple has always suffered with rapid drying even with a brush and it had tip dry after every spray. I’m sure a good bit of it was my poor technique. The orange was certainly my poor technique, I think over thinning and not moving enough so I got some horrible spider webbing. I think they turned out reasonably well.

I’ve not forgotten the Space Hulk Terminators, but they’re just a bit daunting having so many highly detailed minis. They might be my project that comes with me when I travel for work

Thanks for looking

Warboss_Waaazag wrote:Beautiful transport interior. Great job!

Thanks and Warboss and now it’s sealed away for ever!

I’m really going off the rails now with even more projects coming up. Instead of doing a bit on the Blood Angels Terminators I decided to hack up some Poxwalkers duplicates that I won on eBay. I got themas part of a bundle with some Death Guard Chosen of Mortarion and Tainted Cohort which I only picked up for the Malignant Plague Caster as I seem to have lost the Space Marine Heroes Series 3 version. He was probably thrown out with the supposedly empty boxes along with the duplicate warrior . So obviously to ease my pain I bought more minis! here’s what the whole gang looks like with their body duplicates

I think that I’ve managed to make them different enough by the odd arm/hewd/weapon swap. I probably should’ve been more brutal in changing some of the poses of the two-handed weapon guys. Maybe if I get some more on the sprue that will be an easier task. I’ll get some primer on them next and see if I need to do some more gap filling. So far it’s just been done with a runny sprue goo that covers most of my sins and gives some interesting shapes, perfect for Poxwalkers some close up side by sides in the spoilers

Spoiler:

This guy had a tentacle donated by a chaos space marine terminator that I think was donated by Ragsta

Axe head donated by 2nd Ed Boxset Ork

In the side on view you can see his Bloodletter leg, again donated by Ragsta I believe

Just a new head and weapon I think I might’ve trimmed a tentacle and turned a horn too

This guy now has 2 melee weapons and a new head

This guy got his coat cut up and a spare head from Space Marine Heroes Series 3 which is maybe a little on the large side but Nurgle. I also rotated his tentacle and gave him the bionic arm from the set

This guy is a bit same, I should probably trim a few tentacles and maybe swap his other arm

Another samey walker, but I like how he strapped a hammer on to his gun barrel!

This one I like! Another SMH3 head that’s an ok size for him, a new arm and a weapon swap. I think the SMH3 head walkers are my favourites right now

I like how the hook axe turned out on this lad. I think it was from an old Ork axe that I clipped down to match the hook on the back.

Head and weapon swap for this guy, plus I turned his 3rd arm around to change the silhouette a bit

Not sure what I’ll paint tonight, probably should do some work on the Terminators. Let’s see what the mood brings me

Thanks for looking

Thanks, they were tricky but fun to chop up. Last night didn’t have any terminator action as I just wasn’t in the mood to paint but tonight saw some progress.
Warboss_Waaazag wrote:These are brilliant. I don't know why I never thought to do similar with my own poxwalkers. Guess now I'll just have to buy more and try my hand at it with those.

Sounds like a plan! I think I’d have had more variety had they not been already built, but I’m happy. I did manage to prime them (and my Valravn ) yesterday, so they’ve joined the growing Death Guard pile in my primed drawer.

Not massive progress, but i managed to get most of the Blood Angels Terminators an Evil Sunz Scarlet layer. It’s deliberately a bit rough and patchy as I want them grim dark to match my Genestealers.

Looking at it I think some of them might need to do another highlight with Evil Sunz before I add some proper highlights with Fire Dragon Bright. Will probably do a mix of that and Evil Sunz as the first highlight, then a pure one before I put a red wash over the top as a filter. Whilst there’s still a hell of a long way to go, I actually quite enjoyed painting them tonight, so maybe they’ll step up a gear and progress a bit quicker now.

Thanks for looking

A bit of a random update today. First up, the Fortress saw battle for the first time. The original trio from our Kill Team group got together for a Christmas game down the pub (Chance & Counters in Bristol). I volunteered to be in the middle with my Blooded and the other 2 let me take a couple of extra bodies to make up for it. Here’s the deployment

I planned to dominate the approaches by putting all of my shoots things on the tower and wearing the other teams down with charging assaults, keeping the Brimstone Grenadier inside the tower to suicide anyone that got too close. Well that plan lasted my first activation, where I chose to fire the grenade launcher at the scout rocket launcher who missed. That revealed him to the rocket launcher who took out the enforcer, grenade launcher and comms man. A bloody revenge mission ensued for most of the rest of the first TP as my team wore itself down against the scouts. When the squats eventually joined the fight (they’re pretty slow! ) it was left to the Grenadier to do what he does best in TP2. He took out a few squats, but the squats saw the scouts as their main opposition and embarked on settling a grudge! Some stellar work from the Melta gunner and corpseman (who’d retreated to the tower) miraculously helped me wipe out the scouts in TP4. Somehow my Butcher and Trench Sweeper managed to slow the squats enough to ensure they only held 3 towers at the end.

Having tactically chosen to level up my kill op score by picking soft targets on each side, that lone Melta Gunner in the tower gave me a final VP and helped me win by a point from the squats! What looked like being a quick defeat somehow turned in to victory! Great fun was had by all and the game turned on a couple of dice rolls. Not sure if I’ll get to play before the new year, so it was fun to finish with a bang!

Next hobby update is a tenuous link to Kill Team in that my pre-order for Provisionally Prepared arrived… and I quickly built them up!

They were such a cool model to not pick up and they look super cool in person. I need to check them next to Rein & Raus from BSF as they seem tinier than I remember those lads being.

With the final F1 race of the season I took to making some progress on the Space Hulk Terminators whilst watching it. Not the most enthralling of races so I made decent progress and got the reds finished.

Having stippled the Evil Sunz Scarlet layers on I switched to the sponge for a mix of Army Painter Fanatics Pure Red (perhaps closer to Wazdakka Red than Evil Sunz Scarlet which was disappointing) and Fire Dragon Bright. Then a lighter application of Fire Dragon Bright by sponge. I finished up the evening by getting the airbrush out and covering the armour with a Red wash. Last night I did also start blocking in the black areas including a black undercoat for the metallics but didn’t get a picture. I’m away for work this week and they came with me. I had planned to bring my USB magnifying light, but silly old me left it in the drawer at home.

Thanks, their Armour came out really nice. It’s a bit on the bright side but some streaking time will knock it back really nicely with any luck!
youwashock wrote:Congrats on breaking in the fortress with a win!

Yeah, it was good to get a win and just a really fun game. And thanks, I’m quite enjoying this sponging of armour, it’s fast and effective.

Having finished the armour in the last post I’ve been painting all the non-red bits black ready for other colours. Today was the first day of my Christmas holidays and I finished that step, then moved on to highlighting the bits they will remain black as well as the blue armour on the Librarian. As I was stippling and sponging I tried masking off the nice red armour with some blue tack

It seemed to work pretty well and left me with only a few touch ups to do on both colours.

The black doesn’t look like it needs a filter, but the blue is a bit bright and could do with a bit of knocking back. Not sure whether to give it a filter like I did the red or just wait for the streaking grime to do its thing. Next I’ll make a start on the white bits of armour that some of them have. I’ll probably need to stipple with a decent brush for those bits as they’re pretty small areas for the most part. Then it’ll be seemingly endless metallics on all of their embellishments.

Thanks for looking!

PS : I’m off to pick up Brutal & Cunning tomorrow for some Ratling action. I’m not sure what to do with the Wrekka Krew though. I’ll see if the store has some Ogryns to bolster the Ratlings too
