Thanks, they seem to be getting there. Blocking out all that black seemed to take forever, but gives a nice base for the other colours

So this morning I did the Christmas food shop and picked up Kill Team: Brutal & Cunning on the way. I’ve got to say, it’s a pretty weighty box for to say half of it is Ratlings! I was intrigued what the new terrain was like and how it fitted with the rest of the Volkus set, so I got building the first sprue;

I’ve got to say, it’s pretty neat! It meshes well with the Strongholds and the bunker with the walls, but best of all is the bits of wall that can be blown open! It’s already neat touch that’s pretty well done, though Ive heard that the Blooded will need a Melta to get through. I’m wanting Volkus to be quite transportable, so after building the bunker I decided to magnetise all of the walls. That means I’ll have to have an inside and outside to keep the magnets aligned. I think that could work pretty well and will go for a beige-ish white on the inside and probably the same blue-grey that I did for the Fortress. I got some Dirt Down moss effect which will probably also play a part.

This afternoon and evening I got back on with the Blood Angels Terminators. It was quite fun trying to replicate the heraldry on them and the white came out looking fairly decent. After that I did a few more touch ups before I got stuck in to the metallics.

The back row has had its Boltgun Metal applied, but I’m now thinking that I will change up a few things. The box art has quite a few gold chains and scrolls, but I might do them all in silver. That said the sergeant has some fancy scrolls that might be better in gold.

I’m away tomorrow taking the MIL to the SIL and getting to see their family which will be nice. When I’m back I will hopefully get a bit of time to finish up the metallics before Santa comes.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks blockade, it’s easier to get hobby done when you don’t have to worry about work!

I made some good progress today. The kids had some salt dough decorations that they wanted to paint so I offered to supervise! That allowed me to smash out all of the Boltgun Metal on the Terminators.

It’s funny how some colours really help a model look better. It needs a highlight of silver, but they’re really getting there now. I’ll do the gold next I think for a bit more of a feel for the finished look. Still loads to do mind, but I seem to have found my mojo with them now.

All that said, I also signed up for a Kill Team event at the new FLGS on the High Street in mid January. I could do with adding a few more options for the Blooded, so a new chieftain might make a show soon. I also seem to have picked up a commission for some Xenomorphs, so they should probably jump the queue as well. I do fancy painting up the Volkus Terrain so I have a quicker set up and pack away at my Kill Team group. I’ll keep going with the Terminators for now, but I might change course soon if progress slows

Thanks for looking and if I don’t post beforehand, Merry Christmas Dakka!

Yeah, I hope so, the dead ones at the feet of my Genestealers looked good, so hopefully these guys look just as gnarly!

Well the gold was quite a slog last night, so much so that I didn’t quite finish it. Part of the issue was deciding where to put the gold to match their heraldry. The main issue was that the Retributor Armour was a pain to work with. I added a load of thinner and flow improver and it got better, but I think it still needs some more to be as useable as my Boltgun Metal. Anyway, here’s where I got to

Here’s some pics showing off their Heraldry on their right shoulder pads.

With all of the gold I’m thinking they have a similar vibe to Meph’s Blood Angels from back in the day, which I’m really digging!

Not sure when I’ll get some time to paint and post next as tonight will be present wrapping and drinks either Mrs gobert. Hopefully I’ll get some time in Boxing Day between packing for travels.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Yeah, I’m still not decided on the Wrekkas, they are pretty cool and look like they could be fun to play. Let’s see how I get on with clearing the Kill Teams backlog

Back from visiting my family I took to the loft to do some hobby stuff. My Brutal & Cunning terrain is all magnetised and should be ready to prime tomorrow if the weather is decent. That took a fair while so I only managed to finish the gold on the Terminators

I think I’ll switch focus tomorrow to the Blooded reinforcements and maybe the Volkus terrain.

Thanks for looking and I hope Santa added to your grey piles!

It’s been a busy hobby day today. This morning I got the Brutal & Cunning terrain finished and ready for priming by filling some of the magnet holes with sprue goo. It’s pretty effective, I just was a bit impatient so it pulled off in a few areas. Might pass as battle damage I reckon. I then went in a priming spree, starting with the Xenomorphs, then the B&C terrain, the Blooded extras that I’ve built, and finishing off with the crates and doors from B&C. So much priming given the terrain had Black, Grey & White zeniths, that my trigger finger was feeling it

After a ridiculous amount of shaking the Colour shift paint, I embarked on a few testers for the commission that I picked up. The chap wanted them in the blue and I thought I’d see what a fully blue one looked like. I set off with a dry brush, but that gave dull results. A good over brushing gave better and then a few touch ups got them pretty close to the original. I think the original might not have used paint that was quite so well mixed so is a little more silvery. That or the gloss ardcoat sent it silvery

I still have a couple of days left after the New Year before I have to go back to work so given how quick these guys are I should be able to get them finished and in the post.

Keeping the hobby butterfly theme going I also slapped some paint on some Traitor Guard to give me nearly all of the options for Blooded Chieftains.

I figured only a Chieftain would get away with trousers like that in a Traitor Guard unit! The zenithal prime and a quick white dry brush helped the minis take the contrast and speed paints well. I have a tournament in 12 Jan 25 so should be able to get them finished before then.

Whilst waiting for paints to dry I also got started on the parchment painting for the Space Hulk Terminators, and boy was there a lot! You’d think that some of them were Angry Marines the volume of purity seals on them. So much so that I only did half of them before calling it a night

I also kept spotting bits of heraldry that I need to fix up before they get their grime on. I decided that their ropes would be the same colour as the parchment and loin cloths but I might change it for something a bit whiter.

It’s now morning and I’m off to GW to spend some of the vouchers that Mrs gobert got me for Christmas. I’m hoping to pick up a box of Ogryns for the Ratlings to hang out with plus a few paints I have in mind for the Volkus terrain.

Cheers,

Happy New Year Cap! Gotta keep fighting the long painting war

Whilst I was away visiting family I thought it’d be a good time to put together the annual Year in review post. Though with losing signal on my phone causing dakka to refresh it’s about the third time I’ve written some of it! I should try to remember and use notes instead of typing in dakka itself.

January got off to a good start with a squad of Terminators being finished for the Void Panthers

Together with a bunch of other Terminators that I’d built

My 3d Printer got to work finishing printing a Harbinger of Damnation board for Kill Teams

The month concluded with a good bit of progress on a bunch of Aliens: Another Glorious Day In The Corps minis

It wasn’t long in to February that the Aliens:AGDITC minis were finished off

I then plugged away at the Harbinger of Damnation board, which also saw my first game of Kill Team. That game resulted in a Victory for the Void Panthers

March got off the ground with a bunch of 3d printed icons for the Void Panthers Terminators

Then I painted up Librarian Natorian as a bit of a treat following the slog of the Harbinger of Damnation

Keeping the good momentum going I painted up some Poxwalkers for my fledgling Death Guard force

Ripley then got her Power Loader on

Before the Void Panthers gained a squad of Tactical Marines

With a Demi-Company in sight I made a start of a Devastator Squad

And cobbled together a squad of scouts from my now extensive bits box

April got off to a bang with some eM4 Orcs that I donated to theCrowes son for his DnD games (they might also make a cameo in the mining game too!)

With a Demi-Company on the horizon I got started on a Devastator squad

And put together a bunch of friends for them

May got off to a fun start with another game of Kill Team

Quickly followed by the Devastator Squad Boltgun Marines

And their mates with big guns

To celebrate a Demi Company I got the built and painted Panthers out for a few pics

June meant I needed to pack away the Marines, but got a snap or two of the painted Demi Company

And one with all of the Void Panthers painted to date

To celebrate the milestone I painted up Chaplain Germanus

And splurged on a bunch of Kill Teams

The High Elves got a fancy backdrop for their display shelf

My 3d printer got to work printing out a White Dwarf and youthful gobert inspired Strongpoint Fortress

With the month wrapping up with the Blooded Kill Team getting finished

I enjoyed painting them so much I even bought some nu-Cadians to turn in to more Traitor Guard

Turning their removed arms in to Blooded tokens

I then finished up the month by doing some work on a bunch of Heavy Weapons Marines

July starts off with a 3-way game of Kill Team

And a works trip game too

The 2nd Company of the Void Panthers had some reinforcements built

As did the 1st

I didn’t quite get the batch of Heavy Weapons finished

As this little gift to myself arrived

August saw a decent bit of outdoor painting

With a few Special and Heavy Weapon Void Panthers being finished in the sunshine

Then a bunch of new pillars for the Harbinger of Damnation Kill Team Board

And I very nearly finished off the Space Hulk Genestealers

September saw the Brood all finished, thanks to a great and quick scheme from @rgb.miniatures over on instagram and YouTube

I smashed out a handful of Necron Warriors I got cheap on eBay ages ago

And gave the Plasma toting Void Panthers a glow up

I then finished a few additions to the Blooded Kill Team with some Nu-Cadians turned Traitor

That gave me a full roster for my first Kill Team Tournament which I walked away from with 2w 0d 2l

1st game was a victory against Grey Knights

2nd was a loss to Kommandos

3rd was another loss to Strike Force Justian, but the Corpseman got to stab Captain Justian in the eye with his Stimm Needle and kill him!

Game 4 was a really fun one against the Exaction team that resulted in victory

Next I got started with a sort out and my 3d printer helping organise my paint drawer

Plus the crazy notion to paint all of my Space Hulk Terminators in one batch!

October began with my now massive bits collection getting sorted in to some new drawers

And I finally got around to recycling a bunch of sprues I’d hung on to

All of which was to make some space for Kill Team: Hivestorm.

And I quickly got on with painting up the Universal Equipment

I then kept procrastinating over the Space Hulk Terminators and started painting up the White Dwarf Strongpoint Fortress

November started with the White Dwarf Stongpoint Fortress being finished off

I kept the 3d printing going and painted up the inside of a Valravn gunship

This thing was massive when it was fully built

I then painted up some 3d printed measuring gauges for Kill Team

I also painted the Hivestorm gauges, but never took photos
The month closed with me cutting up a bunch of Poxwalkers to avoid duplicates

December has had less of that completion vibe (but that should get my mini count off to a good start again next year!). That said the Fortress saw battle with a 3-way Kill Team game

I built up Provisionally Prepared as preparation for Brutal & Cunning

When that arrived I got stuck in building the terrain

And edged closer to finishing the Space Hulk Terminators

Overall a really productive year. The numbers were dominated by terrain and I only managed to paint 86 miniatures, but 443 individual pieces speaks for itself I think!
Void Panthers = 27
Necrons = 8
Death Guard = 10
Blooded/Traitor Guard = 18
Harbinger of Damnation = 278
KT Universal Equipment = 28
White Dwarf Strongpoint Fortress = 23
KT Measurement Gauges = 6
Space Hulk Genestealers = 23

I have quite a few in progress to boost next years numbers, so hopefully it will be as fruitful!

Happy New Year fellow dakkanaughts!

Thanks Olthannon, there were lots of fun projects for sure! The Blood Angels terminators are certainly turning in to a fun project too

Well, 2 days in to 2025 I have 2 completed minis! The Traitor Chieftains are to give me a few more options including the optimal Power Sword chieftain. The Bolter chieftain is a little less optimal but might be handy to have someone to dish out damage at range since all of the other options are limited to 6 inches

Nothing special on these guys painting wise but I think the banner came out nice with mixing some pink in to the purple for the highlights. I do have one important question, Black or White background

I also did a bit more on the Space Hulk Terminators, getting pretty much all of their base colours blocked in, which took a long time as I kept missing purity seals as these guys are basically Angry Marines!

I think I got all of the seals now . I’ve got a few more base colours to go and then I’ll do some highlights before they get their grime on.

And being the sensible chap that I am I started another project! As signposted previously I got in to the Volkus terrain. Nothing fancy yet, just a base coat of Space Wolves Grey contrast on the outside and Rakarth Flesh on the inside. The former didn’t last very long and ended up being really dark. I’m much happier with the Fang mixed with Gravelord Grey Speed Paint and a bunch of thinner that I used on the Barricade walls from Brutal & Cunning.

I’ll get the sponge out next and get some nice textures on the walls.

Thanks for looking

Your stuff is looking amazing. The purple on your Void Panthers really pops, and I love the bases on the Blooded Kill team as well. Mixing the new cadian kit with the remaining pieces from the Blooded Sprue and a few mechanicus bits really brings the rag tag set up together. Add in a few GSC pieces and you can kitbash to your heart's content!

Thanks Blockage, purple seems to be my favourite colour . I’ve not got any GSC bits but I just won a low ball on a Death Guard army that included a few Chaos Renegades, so they’ll get thrown in the mix on the next batch. Maybe I should look in to GSC if Foilrak is right and the store anniversary Genestealer is a precursor to a new Space Hulk edition

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Another Glorious Day on Christmas Leave, and another project on the go. Though this is likely to be a quick one. A guy approached me on Instagram a few weeks back asking i would sell him my Blue Xenomorphs that i painted at the end of 2023. I wanted to keep them so offered to paint him a set on commission, and to my surprise he said yes and posted me a box of Aliens! With being away with work and Christmas commitments it took a while to get going but they’re now built and primed so I got started. I found a few other Aliens to test the scheme which he wanted modifying to be all blue, and honestly I think it looks better than what I did the first time around

And here are the test minis that I did

And as I had a few others I decided to paint them up too

They look pretty cool in grey, but I might give them a wash/filter before they get a gloss coat.

Thanks for looking

Morning all! 2025 has gotten off to a great start as I have finished the Xenomorphs. The Blue guys turned out surprisingly well and I think I prefer them to the old ones that were a bit more OSL like.

Another tweak was the silver/blue base rims, I’m not so sure on those, but the customer wanted it so that’s what I did.
Shortly after those, the 4 test aliens were finished

These guys were a bit of a mish-mash, some having Nuln oil wash, I think one might even have been half and half! Still they’re done, but this time with a black rim including the top of the rim which is a step up from the rest as I left their rim tops Boltgun metal. I might have to fix that

The grey/black guys from last time are also now finished. The heavy Nuln Oil wash really helped them a lot and they’re definitely my favourite aliens now.

I used a bit of the old citadel space wolves grey to do the final highlight and it gave a bit of a blue tint to their skin that I like. One thing I did do for them all was that they got a coat of varnish through the airbrush. One thing I need to watch out for in the future though is that the Ardcoat seems to develop a skin when left in the cup. I might have to pick up some alternative as I’m planning oil washes in the not too distant future.

Keeping the hobby ADHD going, I also flitted back to the Volkus terrain. I had hoped to get it down by this Sunday, but that ain’t happening. I have however made good progress on the outside walls. I set of sponging them but I needed such a small sponge I was taking ages, so i switched to stippling.

After the first layer there is still quite a difference between the Brutal & Cunning set that got a layer paint base colour and the Volkus stuff that got Contrast. By the 3rd layer though the difference was minimal

It’s still there but much reduced. I’ll do the inside next. Stippling with Rakarth Flesh then Pallid Wych Flesh to get a texture before adding some white to the wych flesh for a dry brush to bring out the details. I’ll get the underside of the floors out to do the same. Then it’ll be about a million years of picking out metallics!

Tomorrow I have a Kill Team tournament at the new game store that opened recently about 1 mile from my house. It’s going to be hectic as each game is timed to be 1:45 and with the blooded being such a numerous team they take ages. Had a practice game on Thursday where I tried to maximise the various buffs and I did quite well. I just need to not be massively gung ho or leave people out in the open. Even the ogryn can’t handle that! Oh and I just remembered that I need to splatter blood on the Melta dude as he melted a couple of Night Lords!

That’s all for now, thanks for looking

Let’s build a campfire, sing a few songs. With all those Xenos, it’s probably the best bet as they’re facing quite an uphill struggle! I’m really enjoying the terrain so far, hopefully that continues with the metallics

I managed to sneak in a couple of hours of painting this afternoon between family time and chores. Got the inside all stippled and dry brushed

It’s a bit more subtle than the outside Space Wolves Grey-ish colours

As you can see, but I guess the base colour was a lot lighter. I’m excited to see how the oil wash is going to look.

I even got the airbrush out and threw a dirty red brown (saddle brown from Vallejo) down in random ish areas to give some more variety.

I kinda wish that I’d done all of the steel work first as it looks like a good rust starting point. Never mind, I might add some more when Ive done the steels. I’m tempted to add another colour, but I might have gone a bit strong on the brown. Will definitely do steels next. Wish me luck!

Loving the finish on the outside of those structures! To me eye its looking like exactly the right amount of contrast between the tones. These are going to look neat.

Olthannon wrote:Great stuff Gobert, love that blue on the xenos.

Thanks Olthannon, they came out better than I was expecting, just hope they make it to their destination as Royal Mail are showing it’s still at the local sorting office

Well it’s been a busy couple of weeks or so of hobby. The tournament was a bit of a bust, W0,D1,L3. First game was against my usual opponent(@coleface40k), but I let his Nemesis Claw in too close and got absolutely smashed. Next game was against Kommandos where things went much better, but I still lost thanks to that surveillance grot whizzing about the board. That was probably the most fun game of the lot, plenty going on and it wasn’t over before it started. Next was the wooden spoon fight against a fellow Blooded player, that ended in a draw which I felt I should’ve won, but kept forgetting my buffs and Blooded tokens. Game 4 was against Legionaries, and a player that knew his team inside and out. Unsurprisingly that turned out to be a real flop and I got tabled. There were a few highlights and I got a few clarifications on rules that should help me in the futures. I think it’s fair to say that the Elite teams really have an advantage with their 3APL and the Astartea shoot/fight twice ability makes things really tough. I’ve bought a sheet of the legit Blooded tokens so I should have a fighting chance of remembering buffs a little more. The last player I played also laid out all of his cards and used tokens to help him remember what was what, so I should try that next time as well. Saying that we have a few new players this week at our little work club so we’ll probably be playing a paired down rule set again.

On the hobby desk has been the Volkus terrain. I’ve been loosely following an Vince V terrain Hobby Cheating video so against my judgement I decided to do the oil wash before blocking in all of the steel and other colours. I think that was a mistake in hindsight but I’m committed now. The oil wash itself went pretty smooothly, though some bits just didn’t want to rub off, perhaps I waited too long (only about an hour) before sponging them down.

Overall it looks very grim dark, but as noted above I have lost most of the texture. The red-brown I airbrushed though gives a nice variation in tone and I think I like the inside colour even more than the outside now.

Post the messy oil wash I battled the stink and slapped on some Dark Gunmetal on most of the bracing similar to the Kill Team Barricades I did last year. I also made a start on a few bits that will be Boltgun metal like fallen bits of floor and the tanks.

They’re looking pretty good now and I’m looking forward to rusting them up. I quite fancy doing a resin pour in the open tank and want something funny to put inside, but as I’m thinking of adding some moss on the walls it might be fun to put a small tree in there (any good recommendations?)

I’ve also been distracted by my new Death Guard project. Not sure if I already mentioned but I won a low bid on a small Death Guard army over Christmas, giving me the Combat Patrol plus a few terminators, characters and some vehicles. I think it gets me close to 2000 points though with a new codex coming I might need a few more bits. Handily I quite fancy a Great Unclean One and some Plague Bearers so it might work out ok. In any case, I got a butt load more Poxwalkers, 26 I think but they were all duplicates, so I repeated my earlier project of chopping them up and rebuilding. I went even more extreme this time and barely a limb was left attached. In fact some were just a torso at one point, getting new legs, arms and heads. I’ve nearly finished them so thought I’d share a pic of the rag tag bunch

I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun with a hobby knife before… but that could be down to the copious amounts of sprue goo and poly cement I inhaled! either way, great fun and gave lots of variety from 10-15 models. I think I’ll probably magnetise my Blackstone Fortress walkers so they can join in with the larger force. The Death Guard will probably share top priority with the Void Panthers over the coming year. The question is whether I change the scheme to be different to the BSF Death Guard or not. Here’s a small reminder of what they looked like

Thanks for looking

You do go to town on those walker conversions. A great part of the hobby. Definitely keep that scheme for the DG. It's killer.
