I would go with the dirty white to create come contrast. Purple will blend with the black metallic that makes up a lot of the armour.
My two cents,

He is a cutie isn’t he! Glowing green eyes might change your mind though! I might need to do something else next as another black project might be a bit much… but I was testing potential black recipes earlier, so you never know.

Yeah, I think you’re right Cap, dirty white would give plenty of contrast. I did think Crimson would be cool, but once the green is on it might be a few too many colours. White it is!
Mrs gobert is away in London, so I had a free evening to paint once clubs were done and kids were in bed. Nothing much to report, just another coat of yellow and then some Zandri dust on the bone, horns and barnacles
It was quite slog in the end as those barnacles were everywhere and most of the other areas needed 2-3 coats for full coverage. The test mini even joined the party as he needed another coat of yellow on his base.
I spotted quite a few bits that should be pink or Boltgun metal or copper, so I need to do those next as I think I’m pretty much at the wash stage now. If you look at spots like the grenadiers ones you can see some of the tougher touch ups that I need to do. If I stick with stippling I’ll need to be careful now the surrounding areas are painted. I guess these guys will need a varnish once they’re done to stop more paint rubbing off
Than I for looking

Thanks Tommygun1918, I think they’re progressing nicely too, and the grimdark has just entered the building. I don’t have Ghillie Dew, but I’m thinking of sulphur wastes, so it might be a good purchase for the greenish patches.
I’ve been making busy in these guys but forgot to take step by step pics. Basically all of the none black section got a Ratling Grime was. The copper/brass areas got some Nihalakh Oxide. The pits and breaks in the armour as well as the Boltgun Metal areas got a wash of Vallejo Game Effects Dry Rust, including some streaks with adry brush. That was followed by watered down Vallejo Game Effects Rust. I then picked out some of the piping and flys that I missed before doing another highlight on some of the pinker Nurglings and cables, including the test Marine. I then dry brushed some Brassy Brass to give a bit more shine those areas. The bone and horns then got a first highlight of Zandri Dust mixed with some Ratling Grime. Getting us to here:
I’ll finish up the bone next and then probably the pustules, wood and leathers. The green glow will be the finishing touches on any liquids, lenses and smoke/flames.
Through the week I spent a bit of time sorting out some of my pile and figured that I would build the last couple of Necrons I have.
Illuminor Szeras and a Psychomancer, both were bought because of their magic effects. The life essence being removed and the digi-skull were just too cool to resist! I have to say that they were both really quite fiddly to assemble but super fun at the same time… kinda tempts my to but some Canoptek Wraiths and Spiders to paint with them
Thanks for looking

Only now noticed that you managed to finish your Volkus terrain. Fantastic job mate! If you had took the time to add a bit of superdetailing, those terrain pieces could easily go for a diorama all on their own. Superbly done!

Thanks tauist, it was a great set to paint up and the scheme I loosely followed was fun and turned out great!
Tek wrote:I've been trying to cook up a black / dark purple scheme for my Death Guard and I can't quite get it right. Your scheme looks great!
Thanks Tek, and welcome to my plog. Feel free to steal the recipe, I think I put the steps down earlier, but it was just an Army painter Purple stippled on followed by a mid grey stipple/dry brush. I also did a bit of Ratling Grime on the lower half of panels to darken them down a bit.
So I’m away for work tonight and rather than bringing the full Kill Team I brought a one man Kill Team! Inspired by my Kill Team group chat, I decided to paint up an Eversor that I planned to be part of my Blackstone Fortress collection. We’re thinking of home brewing some rules for him to play as a lone operative, wreaking havoc on some unsuspecting Kill Team. I’ve decided to stick close to the box art in terms of colours, but going more green than blue with his black bodysuit. In one evening I’ve managed to paint the suit, his ‘armour’/back pack and his skulls (though I missed one on his thigh armour. Pretty pleased with him so far, what do you guys think? (Apologies for the poor pic, his gun and half pipe makes him a pita to picture!)

Thanks Cap, he’s a fun little model
I got a bit of painting in this week and switched back to the Plague Marines. I started on their bases and thought I’d try a how they looked with some Speed Paints over the sand. I ended up liking the result on the test mini so rolled it out on the others. The whole base got a coat of yellow speed paint, then I did spots of orange speed paint and mixed up a very thin incubi darkness and a Vallejo turquoise. I did all 3 colours whilst they were still wet to encourage them to bleed in to one another. I’m not sure they exactly match Olthannon’s bases and certainly they don’t match the Sulphur Thermal Springs they were inspired from, but I think they look cool. After that the bases got a Chaos black rim and the horns got a few more highlights ending on ushabti bone. The bandages started off like the bones, but went to pallid wych flesh instead.
I need to to think how to paint all of the maggots, probably a flesh/red wash, maybe some pink? Once that’s done I think it’s the Plaguecasters chin, boils and the green goo and glows.
I’m already thinking ahead to the next members of the army I’m wondering whether I change the colours on the tentacles/nurglings for each different squad. I quite fancy blue through green to yellow but wonder if that will be too close to the green glow which will be ubiquitous. If anyone has suggestions for Nurgling colour combos, please suggest. I also think I need to source some extra nurglings for every Marine… anyone know some good sources/stls?
Thanks for looking

Thanks Tommy, they’re really getting quite nasty now. The wash on the maggots blends in with the base a little too much, but is quite nasty looking… I even painted the 2 that are hiding in the Plaguecasters boot
I didn’t get as much done last night as I hoped, mainly tidying up the maggots, and puss filled spots. I used a yellow-brown to neaten them both up. The puss got a wash of old citadel red wash and the maggots got a mix of red and flesh wash with a drop of pink. The latter ended up quite close to the orange I used on the rust, but looks quite maggoty. After that I made a start on the various green bits, like eye lenses and goop
Even with just the first emerald green layer I’m liking how the gang already look more complete! I had a complete brain fart when I sat down to do these bits and forgot what I had left to do. Thankfully my last post reminded me, but I still need to do the plaguecasters face! As another reminder, there’s another bit I need to paint; the couple of tactical rocks on some bases.
Thanks for looking Automatically Appended Next Post: seems I’m spamming and double posting today. Just a quick one to show that the whole gang now got their green bits done
I even did a little bit of Death Guard Green on one of the tabards’ nurgle symbols. Will need to do that for all the others like the champions shoulder pad
Thanks for looking… I might even triple post later if I decide to paint later

Thanks mate, the purple hue is very much a first highlight on the black armour. It was stippled on in a bit of a volumetric style before a grey to make it read a bit more black.
I got a little bit more done, getting the first highlight on the goop and lenses.
I really need to find an alternative for this green, its coverage is crap and it dries almost instantly, but it’s a great colour when you get it right. Mrs gobert is away this week, so I’ll probably get a bit of painting in and maybe get them finished.

The end is nigh! At least for painting these Plague Marines. I would’ve probably finished them by now but I decided to paint some tokens that I printed the other day The gloop and lenses and eyes are pretty much done having had there bile Yellow highlights done this morning. Whilst I had some of that on the palette I added a load of thinner and flow improver to make a wash for all of the ribbed bits inside the fleshy cables plus the Champions Plasma Pistol. I think the green really pulls the whole thing together and most of them are done apart from touching up some bits where the paint rubbed off and their pustules. I reckon this guy (Morslug is his name) might be my favourite. The dripping goo and the glee of his Nurgling works really well. He’s also probably the most complete with only minor touch ups needed I thought the standard marine (Gurg the Foul) would be my favourite, as his helmet is cool, but he’s missing the goop. He needs quite a lot of touch ups and his nurgle symbol on his loin cloth highlighting. The Grenadier (Kholerus) is cool too, his helmet seems to have worked out well. Champion Gangrus’ Plasma looks pretty effective for what is just a wash over a base colour. I’ll probably add a white ink to the bottom edge to push the glow even more. He also needs quite a few touch ups, that primer I used was quite shiny and paint hasn’t stuck to it very well at all. Icon bearer Clotticus isn’t much to write home about, his nurglings are a bit dull, but I like how he’s standing on one of them. I’ll have to get a pic of the deformation under his boot before I glue him down. These two have the most left to do with their smoke/flames only having a mid tone base layer so far. I’ll hopefully do that next painting session. Thanks for looking!

Thanks Ragsta, I’m dead chuffed how the basing works with the rest of the scheme, and of course the purple nurgles
Well, I’m calling them done… aside from a coat of matte varnish in an attempt to stop paint rubbing off them as soon as I look at them! I’ve not taken a group shot or any scenes yet, so you’ll have to make do with desktop shots for now.
First up is the Test Marine and Gurg the Foul
Next are Kholerus and Morslug
Clotticus and Scabboth
And lastly here’s Pustus the vile and Gangrus
I also took a few pics of the flames I finished. Scabboths flaming flails were pretty tricky to paint and seemingly harder to photograph with one of them out of focus
And here’s Pustus’ flames
Overall, I’m pleased how they’ve turned out and they were relatively rapidly painted for me… oh, bugger, I missed some maggots on Pustus’ backpack . Anyways, you’ll be seeing plenty more of Plague Marines this year I reckon. Next up will be my Eversor Assassin as I’m away with work tomorrow night, so I’ll do a little hotel room painting if I get the chance. I think I might then go back to the Space Hulk Terminators for a bit, though I’ll probably leave the streaking grime until my next day off work.
Thanks for looking!

As promised, here are some better pics of the Plague Marines
They had their coat of varnish, and I was a little worried about frosting as the humidity was 70%, but I sprayed outside and brought them inside straight away, with zero frosting. So I guess that’s an ok humidity to varnish with colour forge matte varnish.
Now for the individual Marines, starting with the Plague Marine Champion; Gangrus
I think I should’ve painted the circles on his gauntlet green like all of the others’?
I tried a minor bit of OSL on his maw, not super happy but it conveys the effect a bit
His cape certainly looks raggedy, but I wonder if a cross hatch would’ve looked better? I also see that I missed the glow on the ribbed bits of his fleshy cables
It looks like I missed the teeth on his shoulder pad too and the Nurgling has lost some paint in his maggots and horn. I love how I only spot these things when I post on dakka!
There’s a higher shot to show his shoulder pad a bit more. I’m looking forward to playing this guy, with all his regeneration of wounds and nasty Poison/Toxic combo. I hope they give out some nice surprises to the Nemesis Claw and avenge the Bloodeds defeats
Next up is Clotticus the icon bearer
I was just thinking that I hadn’t missed anything on him, and spotted the fly on his pistol holster
I quite like the amount of pink on him, helps him stand out nicely
Another gauntlet that might look better with green circles
I love the cheekiness of the Nurgling poking through the icon, especially as the bit he poked out is in the floor!
Looks like missed a pic of his right hand side, so no Nurgling side cheeks for you today today today . Clotticus is another auto-take as he allows The Contagion strat ploy to be free that makes health enemy operatives act like they’re injured when close to my guys
The Malignant Plaguecaster Pustus the Vile is next on the stand
I’m quite pleased how his flies turned out, the front one is particularly nasty looking imho. I do wonder whether I should’ve gone for another colour for all of the wings, but not enough to change them.
His shoulder pad is a bit bland, I kinda think I should’ve freehanded something on it?
The maggots on this guys are grim, the ones on his staff’s shaft are particularly nasty for some reason
Quite pleased with the glow on the flames too
I think yellow for his belly wound was a good choice, looks like a nasty infection. And true to form, it looks like I forgot to finish his face . In game he has some cool attacks, but he also has a really good healing ability with a decent chance of regenerating 7 wounds! That’s as many as most of my Blooded have in total!
Here’s Scabboth, the fighter with his flail, that has probably the funnest Nurgling hanging off the end of a chain that’s lost its spiked ball. He’s having so much fun spreading his filth!
Just look how happy the little guy is!
I love the sense of speed he has
The goop dripping from his backpack is nice
Scabboth is probably going to see a bit of Kill Team action. As a fighter he needs to get in close and would do some serious damage to hordes… except most of the gaming group are elites. I’ll probably still take him though
The Bloodeds Brimstone Grenadier has given me a soft spot for Grenadiers, so I’ve got high hopes for Kholerus
I like his Nurgling, another happy little fellow, but I think his helmet is my least favourite of the whole set
I love how nasty the spots on his leg look, ready to burst and spread Nurgles filth
More lovely goop drips
I somehow remembered to paint that pipe on the side of his helmet, it was bugging me every step of the way, but I got it in the end!
So whilst I have that soft spot for grenadiers, I’m not as convinced Kholerus is an auto include. His blight Grenades are decent, but it’s no diabolyk grenade.
Penultimate Space Marine Hero is Gurg the Foul (probably the best name of the bunch)
Love his classic helmet and the glow turned out pretty neat
In game Gurg is pretty decent, I think it’ll be a toss up between bringing him, Kholerus or Morslug. Gurg has a greater range, but Morslug should dish out some solid damage. The Blight Grenades seem pretty handy too. Either way I’ll be using the Poisonous Rounds.
Before the last Space Marine Heroes minis, here’s my Test Plague Marine Warrior
I love his two sword pose, really menacing I feel
He doesn’t have much pink on him, hence why I took this pic
I do love the belly maw, it a great aesthetic. This lad won’t see any Kill Team action, but I’m hoping to get at least a game of big 40k at some point this year so with some luck he’ll get to kill something
Finally we come to my favourite; Morslug
I love how the little guy is peeking round, reaching up to fondle the goop
He really does have his eyes on the prize
Such cool mini, but as I noted his limited range means he might not see the table too often. Could be quite handy against the Nemesis Claw or other teams which like to get up close and personal.
I’m not quite done with pics though. I got some of my Killzone Volkus terrain out and took a few more pics
And that’s all I have. I’ll try to think on and take pics when they see their first game. If you guys have any thoughts on whether to stick with the pink flesh for the rest of the Army or to mix it up for each squad, please chip in with ideas
I did make some progress on the Eversor. All I managed was to paint the silver bits and I forgot to take pics.
I think my next main project will be to get the Space Hulk Terminators ready for their streaking grime.
Thanks for looking

I managed to make some progress on the Terminators, but the level of detail on them is nuts! I keep seeing bits that I missed, or painted the wrong colour! I’m still not convinced that I’ve gotten all of their blood drops. Confusingly the OG schem had quite a few drops and lenses painted different colours. I’m thinking I’ll leave gems and lenses as a simple base colour before I do the streaking grime, then highlight them afterwards for even more shine!
I want to put another highlight on the parchments and some stripes on the yellow cables and then I’m ready for streaming grime. I think the librarian and the storm bolter sergeant need their tassels/tabards highlighting too. I also need to wait for some make up sponges arrive as I ruined cotton buds last time where as sponges worked better with oils. I think I should probably also add writing to scrolls and parchment bender the grime.
Th and for looking

I feel like I just painted some Iron Warriors! The box art has painted many of the exposed cables on the Terminators in Hazard Stripes, so that’s how I spent most of my evening.
I think they look decent on the most part, and some even look pretty good. I also spent a good while looking for unpainted cables and things. I think I’ve now got all of the gems and cables, but spotted a few bits of gold that I missed; Sgt Lorenzo’s brooch that keeps his cape attached and someone else has a trinket hanging from an arm cable. After that I think I need to tidy up a bit on Calistarius’ white side of his cape and highlight the red side. Lorenzo needs the black side of his cape highlighting. Scipio needs the red side of his shoulder pad highlighting. Noctis needs his red eagle highlighting. Dead guys skull needs highlighting. Goriel needs his Genestealer bits airbrushing. Then I’m ready to get the streaking grime out! I also need to have a think about Calistarius’ shoulder pad as he’s the only one without sculpted heraldry. The rules book shows that he has some, but it might be a bit beyond my skills. I’ll probably give it a try and if it doesn’t work out im sure I have some Blood Angels transfers that I can use. I should also add some scripture to the parchments too…
Thanks for looking

The nurgly boys turned out fabulously. Quality stuff. Those Terminators will definitely reflect all the time and care you're putting into them.

I really love your Nurgle scheme! The pastel pink and neon green really pop agains the black armor. But if you're thinking about trying different colors for the fleshy bits, I say go for it. I'd suggest other pastel colors like light blue or orange maybe?

The nurgle marines look great but loving what you are doing with the Space Hulk terminators. They have some great detail and you are doing them justice! Can’t wait to see how they end up!

Absolutely loving the DG. Your scheme is great, the lilac nurglings and mutations, the green slime. It ties the whole scheme together. I don't envy you painting all that trim and all those details! What a lot of work has gone into this force.
