I really dislike the idea of the artist proof figures as alternate sculpts. Means more figures to collect but this time they only have relatively small yet noticeable differences.

The toys are pretty chunky and well made. However, mine have not been in the hands of little people, so not sure how resilient they are to boisterous handling?

Joy Toy figures do some amazing Mecha types and figures too.

The Joytoys figures are finally the larger scale man-dollies that I didn't know I've always wanted to play with. Unfortunately the pricing looks like it's going to be... high.

As far as I know, there was an early bird price of something like $125 for all eight back in June - which would have been amazing, frankly.

Now, domestic Chinese pricing works out at US$108 for four, but they up the price for export to $149. I don't feel like that's an affordable price point at all and I really hope it's not what we're going to see on the weekend.

Does anyone have any hints of what prices GW is going to put them up at?

Wow - they're up on the New Zealand site at a completely ludicrous NZ$280 (US$197). I'd be importing them from China for that price if I still wanted them... it's beyond lunacy.

Glad to see that McFarlane is branching out a bit, and there were a few Bandai representing different chapters...

Still, I would probably fork over the $240 for the Bandai's new Captain if he was something cool like Black Templars, Space Wolves, or Imperial Fists (Three of my personal favorites). Or something really cool like Thousand Sons or Death Guard. I just can't justify spending that much on a chapter I could care less about. What I really don't get is while someone could argue its for mass market appeal, these initial releases are on low advertising made-to-order 1 week only runs. Only serious Warhammer 40k fans are even going to find out about it. So WHY is GW pushing Ultramarines so hard?

I have Bandai's Imperial Fists intercessor and I love it. Would love to have my W40K action figure collection grow, but I'm not going to throw down serious cash for lame Ultramarines, and now Joy Toy's Ultramarines AND some 1-off infiltrators. Hard pass. Joy Toy makes some good looking figures (I don't own any personally), but would definitely pick up some INTERESTING figures. On that note the Joy Toy approach seems more fitting for something like Kasrkin Squad or maybe a command HQ. Continuing o, if they were releasing two different types of squads why not make one imperium and the other chaos or xenos?

All I'm saying is that I'm pretty disappointed with the direction GW is pushing the premium end of W40k action figures. McFarlane is for the masses - heck I see them at Target. Good, I'm glad that exists. So with these premium made to order runs please ditch the generic.

The visible audience (be they Dakkaites, YT commenters, FB group members or even your local club scene) is only the vocal minority. The whole audience is much bigger and, generally, far more conventional in their opinions and tastes. Ultramarines are very popular with the audience as a whole, as are marines as a whole, even though the visible (to us) audience finds them boring.

They are also the poster-boy army for the game; one of the easier armies to get into to start playing and human.

Basically all things that make them an easy first port of call for many people getting into the hobby.

Joy Toy are only making two squads because significant parts of the tooling are reused between both sets. There are circa 5 sprues involved in a squad, and it looks like about three of them can be shared between the two sets, so they're getting two full production runs for the tooling cost of seven sprues, rather than ten.

If they made one Xenos unit and one Space Marine one then they would have had to pay for ten sprues. These are pretty fundamental toy economics. No toy line launches any more (I say any more, this has broadly been the case since the 70s) without working out how to reuse as much mould tooling as possible as that's the most expensive fixed cost of production.

I think there's a valid question of if they'd have sold more by making the two squads different chapters, since that's just paint, but they appear to have erred on the side that people would rather have a whole squad (ish).

EXCEPT that in the case of Bandai and Joy Toy they are very limited run made-to-order products with virtually no advertising. The window to order them has only been ONE WEEK. Either you happened to look at the news page on the right day or you signed up for a GW newsletter (and read it). It's a narrow audience. Like I said in my post above - I'm fine with the McFarlane figures of the world starting out generic Ultramarines. Why then are the Joy Toy and Bandai figures, which are high cost limited audience also generic?

The people find out about these premium figures AND are willing to fork over the cash aren't 'just getting into the hobby'.

Ultramarines are the brand. They are the default appearance for Marines on the fronts of every non-chapter-specific box there is. It has how GW has presented brand unity for decades now.

These being Ultramarines should not surprise anyone.

New Bandai Chibi Space Marine advent Calendar to pre-order next week:



I...don't really know what to think about this? I'm sure it's nice to have them in different chapter colours, but I really hope this isn't the only advent Calendar this year (it's a licensed thing so maybe its not?). The Black Library art print Calenders for the past 2 years are great and have plenty of unique and interesting twists put on the prints to make them a bit more special and i was hoping there would be another one of those or something similar. In comparison this seems a little lazy and uninspired - implied to be the same figure 24 times, just different colours. At the very least it could have had the other 4 figures included with alternate schemes too.

Considering a single one of them was £3, I'd expect this to be in the £60 - 70 price range really. That makes it even worse if that's the case.

I HATE chibi-style figures. If this had been, say, the Space Marine hero Advent Calendar, I'd be more likely to pick it up. This, no thanks.

As someone with little knowledge of chibi I have a question. These Marines look off to me, or "bad" if you will. Doesn't their extreme width with the large shoulder pads and gun go against the idea of chibi style emphasizing the head over anything else? Is this done more frequently than I realize or are these chibi Marines an outlier?
