The tricky part of Xenos is the alien world. Isn’t the geometry/planes of it technically impossible? How do you actually recreate that for us to understand?

Other than that, sounds amazing.

Karl Urban would be spectacular as Eisenhorn. Especially since he could cheerfully act his pants off until his face gets stuck, then go full Dredd.

The only problem is then you need someone to out-copface him playing Godwin Fischig.

Honestly, if they were going to do ANY 40k property as a TV show, Eisenhorn is probably the best one to pick. Has a small-ish cast of recurring characters, and is at least somewhat familiar to audiences who aren't into 40k. The procedural cop drama format would work pretty well with him. Would be a hell of a lot more accessible than something about Space Marines or something.

Nope, by far the best would be Cain. Not only the comedic undertones fit the TV much better than grimdumb, Cain is far more down to earth character. With inquisitiors, you need to explain how 'magic' and other stuff works and delve into things that might make good horror show, but isn't really suited to mainstream TV. Cain, on the other hand, war movies sell well, protagonist is much more relatable (and fun), and all you need to explain about the setting is that there's evil magic and Jurgen is good at stopping it, without needing to deal with why or how. Cain also has simple supporting cast of four recurring humans, not weird freaks from inquisitorial band, that can be shown on TV in much simpler and more relatable way.

Then there are footnotes, which can be made as in-universe propaganda reels in between the scenes. General Sulla memoirs anyone?

I agree with this. Solid writing would be the most important part in my opinion.

It is amazing what TV can do these days so if the budget is decent. I think my greatest fear is that the budget will be very low.

You mean, like it was "solid" in Ultramarines, where Abnett managed to mess up the only part that didn't relied on budget to work and did worse job than seriously underpaid animator team doing their part for pennies? Yup, I sure have confidence in him getting to repeat that...

Cain is good for people who're already in on the joke. He doesn't work for normies because they won't get the archetypes and tropes of the setting that Cain, Amberly etc are sending up.

I'll take "grimdumb" over randumb any day, a show that actually bothers to worldbuild out the setting for normie audiences at least won't breed a generation of 40K "fans" in the way that Critical Roll et al have created "fans" of D&D who treat it as a vacuous meme-factory.

Hell no. Genre shows need to stop giving jobs to people who hold genre shows and their fans in complete contempt. And to ensure there's no misunderstanding, there's a difference between an actor who's not a genre fan themselves and didn't know about a certain IP before they got a part related to it but who then seeks to understand said IP to do the best job they can, and the kind of actor who will proudly declare that they don't give a feth about the IP or even actively hope to annoy existing fans(the "if it's not controversial, it's not true art" school of pretentious berkery). That tosser is the latter.

There are so many good sci fi, fantasy and superhero films recently that the possible list of cast is pretty big. Tom Hardy could probably give one of the parts a good go. The pilot dude for instance. Hes got pilot history at least from Dunkirk... and that spitfire from Dunkirk.must have had some kind of anti gravity going on to pull that stunt off

One thing I do hope is that they allow the show's design team to add to the setting. Keep oversight, sure, but I hope GW don't demand they only depict vehicles etc that are presently sold as kits.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

the pilot guy is noted as being a black guy, he's proably a little older too, Edris Ilba might be a good role.

that said I hope they don't waste the budget on A list actors as that'd be a waste. Ravennor IMHO would be best a young charismatic individual... who mostly does voice work

Wasn't Eisenhorn active like 700 years before the current setting? Means no Tyranids and no Primaris. Don't know if that's important to GW. There's a ton of other stuff to cover, and Chaos is a fantastic foil.

He gets turned into a quadriplegic. Close enough. Besides, you can't deny Sean Bean's voice coming out of a weaponized psychic hover chair wouldn't be awesome.

Other than that, sounds amazing.

Yes, its technically impossible. But easy enough to mimic by having a lot of optical illusions and distorted vistas.

Plus as I recall there were a few lines that the characters spoke aloud that really drove home some specific aspects of the wrongness of the place. One that sticks out was one of them saying something about the angles not adding up to 360 degrees on the hexagons.

Does that mean if a marine turns up, he’s going to be really short and horribly proportioned?

I’m cautiously optimistic about this, but not prepared to get excited at this early stage. I’ve seen too many books I love turned into bad films and TV to be anything else. Still, I think the best start they could give the project is to hire Dan Abnett to write the screenplay.

I see this thread is following the usual script for these things.

Lots of people excited. Calls for the casting of Patrick Stewart, Karl Urban and/or Vin Diesel (because they are the only actors in the world apparently). Then the thread will die down as no more information will be coming for a very long time. A TV show being in development means it’ll be coming some time between a couple of years and never.

If it does actually get made, I’m bracing myself for the inevitable wailing and gnashing of teeth that will ensue because it doesn’t meet some people’s ideas of how a 40k TV show should look or feel.

Sure, the announcement is interesting, maybe even good news, but no more than that for now. Nothing more to see.

Dan Abnett wrote Ultramarines. So having him on board is no guarantee at all of a good final product.

Although he is at least intimately acquainted with the characters already

Despite my reluctance to see this winding up well, this is one of the better choices for a show. As Dan always likes to rightly put it, this is domestic 40k and one of the better entry series out there as it's more than just bolter porn and ceramite wankery.

Xenos in particular takes you a lot of awesome places over the course of the story. Though I could see them do one of his earlier cases (Master Immus' Transgression and Regia Occulta), or something like Missing in Action (takes place in between Xenos and Malleus) as a pilot, as these are self-contained and can serve as excellent introductionary tales to what an Inquisitor does and how Eisenhorn himself ticks.

All I can say is, Mark Strong please. He did an amazing job narrating the horrible Xenos game, not to mention, he also did a great job voicing captain Titus of the Space Marine game. Hell, have him play old Eisenhorn and do narration, have another actor play younger Gregor.
