So, for a while now I've had this urge to obtain either a) a Games Workshops plastic Bloodthirster (last time I looked I could get one off evilbay for about £50 to £60) or b) a dragon of similar price, size, stature and presence, as my one big model (and likely last model) purchase of the year.

To that end I've been looking for a dragon that looks along the lines of the Game of Thrones and Skyrim dragons (yes I'm aware they're actually wyverns!).

Problem is, I can't find one.

All the models of dragons I've come across (including several Reaper one's) have wings and 4 legs, so proper dragon, not a wyvern. Plus even the largest one I've seen (one by Reaper with some name I can't recall) doesn't seem from the photos of it to be really all that big and imposing like a Games Workshop Bloodthirster is. The actual wyvern models out there that I've seen are equally as woeful.

Is there a model of a dragon as such I seek out there?

I can vouch for the JoA dragon being frickin huge and nice looking. For the price, there is no better dragon if you can handle the size.

Dragons aren't actually defined by their number/types of limbs. That isn't how dragon mythology has worked, nor how mythology works in concept. It's just the hipsters pretending they know what they are talking about who will spew that 'it's a wyvern!' Nonsense.

At any rate, Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures has a large number of Dragon options but given they are the standard four legs/two wing they may not be of interest. A good number of variants for five chromatic and five metallic, which is nice. Pathfinder also produces their own set, which amounts to more variants you could potentially look through.

There is also Azhag the Slaughterer from WHFB if you can get your hands on him.

Anyway. Mierce designs are uninspired and workmanlike and as far as I know they're still laughing at getting away with being thieving gits. Smaug looks good because it's designed by someone who doesn't make gaming minis. Nolzur gets an A for effort by going with the cobra thing rather than shoving some spikez and roof shingles together.

But y'know, that Joan of Arc dragon is lookin' pretty nice. Good sense of weight, organic detail, muscles that don't look like Arnie in a bad lizard mask... I was going to point out the Pegasus model kit of Vermithrax (the besterest four-limbed dragon evar) but it's in kind of a boring pose. Go for that Legendary Dragon instead.

Eh the problem with "dragons" is that the word basically only has a very casual meaning when its used in a generic sense without any specific context.

You only get meaning with context, be it a specific game or story lore or a mythology or historical background. Once you apply context then the word has meaning, definition and can be argued. Otherwise there are some general conventions around. Dragons breath fire is one; dragons have four legs and wings is another; wyverns have two wing forelegs and two rear hindlegs etc.... Of course they are all VERY generic concepts. Heck within the same lore a wyvern and dragon could have the same overall body composition (two wings two legs) and simply differ on size.

Modiphius announced today that an official skyrim dragon will be coming out in December for the Elder Scrolls game. It's a ways off but there is one coming.

Ooh. That Joan of Arc dragon is really nice. And for $70US, that's a really good price given how big it is.

While not miniatures as such, take a look into the McFarlane dragons.
More action figures than miniatures but they are cheap, loads of different styles and the aesthetics are amazing.

I very much enjoyed working on Creature Caster's Emperor Dragon.

Rob Lane used to own Maelstrom Games, a big online retailer like Wayland Games. He ran up a £100K debt on it. There are extra details on how that debt was handled behind the scenes, but the upshot for our end of the retail process was that he advertised a big sale, raked in a lot of money, then shut the operation down and left a lot of customers without their purchases and out of pocket.
Pretty soon after, a new company called Mierce Miniatures popped up. It swore up and down that it had nothing to do with Maelstrom Games, despite being owned by some guy called Rob Lane.

I like that last one, where Paul Sawyer weighs in on the comments. There's a point to be made that he's being a little unforgiving, but feth it. This is a hobby where hordes of people will forgive anything if you dangle shiny things in their faces. I still view Mierce in the same way as their creature designs - superficial and without substance. I don't need their models and would think twice about buying, even if I did like them.

I’ve got one on my desk (and one is with the painters) and it’s a very tasty dragon indeed.

Indeed. A lot of younger fantasy enthusiasts who haven't read Tolkien's expanded works (The Silmarillion, etc) would be surprised that there were not only wingless dragons, but limbless serpentine ones too. And that's only going back to the 1950s

Those delving into the lore may also be surprised that Tolkien's Orcs don't have tusks or cartoonishly overmuscled physiques.

Or that Power Armour in SF actually predates both 40k and Starcraft!
