One person I know has created no less than seven email accounts AND PO boxes for his extended family purely for the purpose of getting as many boxes as possible to resell later...
eBay's 40k section is sure going to be interesting to watch after it releases!

They could find themselves out of pocket if it's not as limited as some people seem to think. I suspect some of the individual models will be in high demand but others much less so. A fairly large number of people buying the box will not want half of the models in it, which will affect prices if the market gets flooded with people happy to just recoup some of their purchase price.

In case you hadn't noticed, there's a minor disruption going on called COVID-19 which is going to make it tricky to "ramp up production" of anything right now.
Go back under your bridge, please.

"GW limits sales to cut off scalpers" really can't be interpreted as anything but a good thing.
No real player needs six of these boxes, the only ones buying that many are trying to resell them.

Can confirm my local non- gw store, which is extremely small given our town is less than 8K people is getting 24 boxes.

It has space marines in it... what makes you think this is going to be uber elite special edition?
This thing is going to be on the shelves sitting at MSRP waiting to be bought for awhile after release. You should be able to find it for like a year. They're not going to short sell it... they'd lose WAY too much money on that.
It has Space Marines...

I think it will fly off the shelves.
The issue is that its a ludicrous deal.
So you get:
Primaris Captain - £20
Primaris Lieutenant - £20
Primaris Chaplain - £20
Judicar - £20
Bladeguard Ancient - £20
Bladeguard Veterans - £25
Eradicators - £30
Assault Intercessors - £35
Outriders.- £30.
=£220.
Overlord - 20
Royal Warden - 20
Plasmancer - 15
Cryptothralls - 20
Skorpekh Lord - 25
Skorpekh Destroyers - 30
Plasmacyte - 15
Catopek Reanimator - 30
2 Squads of Necrons+Scarabs if its like the old box - 60
=£235. (Prices might be a bit off with this one.)
Special Edition Rulebook. Lets say £35 like a regular one.
Total: £490.
Now okay, Maybe the Ancient comes with the Veterans so knock it down a few quid. Maybe the Necron Characters won't be as expensive (i.e. say you get the plasmancer and plasmacyte together for £20 or something) so you can knock off another £10-20 there. Primaris Characters could actually be even more expensive but hopefully wouldn't be.
But even with those cuts you only get down to say £450~.
And supposedly this is available for £120.
Which means this represents a faintly ludicrous 70%-75% saving if you valued all the contents. (FWIW it might be worth doing this calculation for the previous starter, but I'm lazy.)
So yes, Scalpers are going to try their hand. Because there is a potentially ludicrous mark up once these boxes are consumed, and people have to acquire the models at RRP.
But the downside for GW, is that if they release too many of this kit, no one on earth is going to ever buy any of the independent kits, with their massively higher RRP, because ebay etc will be awash with these models for years to come at a fraction of the price. I mean as said - buy the box, keep the half you like, sell the rest for literally the £120 you paid for it, and you are effectively getting half an army for free, while giving someone a massive saving versus what they'd end up paying if they bought the kits at RRP.
You compare it to the Lumineth Box they did (that doesn't appear to be selling) and you basically get some free dice. Not surprising people are not falling over that one.

I think the cost economy was trash on BotP, though. Like the savings was in the 30% range vs this being in the 50s?
I mean it can say all sorts of things about Space Marine preference, but... I mean... they're not going to build a ton of angst, use it as the flagship for an edition release, and then short print it to make it some ultra rare collector's item.
They're literally stealing money from themselves.
They are going to produce it, and it is probably why we see A LOT of stuff on the website going out of stock. Reduced capacity from COVID + ramp up on Indomitus production has everything else sidelined.

I don't agree with this take. I think it's very likely that however much of this was going to be produced has already been done, and it's very likely shipped out to a lot of distributors already. It's very likely they still haven't gotten back to 100% capacity on their factory yet, and are behind is why we are seeing so much out of stock.
We are are also very likely to see a starter set come out shortly after this which will be the flagship product for the edition. It won't contain as much value, but it'll likely be available.
All evidence points to this being a limited run. Some stores have even run out of their pre-order allocation according to the N&R thread. Don't expect this to stick around in any measure.

I'm still waiting on an email to my FLGS, I really want to support them but they haven't put anything out there one way or another about pre-ordering.
I also have one secured through an online retailer.
If I get both that's great, if I get just the one box that's ok too.

My FLGS already received a message saying that further pre-ordering is not possible.
I don't know when the pre-order went up exactly, but it felt like it was only available for a very limited time.
All reserved boxes for customers could be ordered and then some more, so no problem here. The demand seems very high.

It seems like some FLGS used up all the pre order units, and stores in non priority places get 2 box per store. Still better then no box though, would be hard to play the game without the full rule book.
Shops can't even order them illegaly from germany, because they have no units to sell.

Well, the official pre-order window doesn't start until Saturday, though I imagine ad hoc reservation lists were a thing.
What GW are probably saying there is that the FLGS can't request any more copies than they already have.

what I know from my FLGS is that he need to tell how many copies he wants, than they tell him how many he gets and/or if he can order more later
in this case he had to place his order, therefore let people place pre-orders so he knows how many copies he need
and reservations already exceeded the maximum amount of boxes he will get from GW and was told that there won't be more
so he sold out 4 days before the official pre-order started

Sorry, I expressed myself poorly.
My FLGS (not a Warhammer store) could put in their (shop) pre-order for the stuff today starting somewhen in the morning.
Shortly after a message was sent out to them that no further items could be pre-ordered and that they should not accept additional pre-orders from customers on Saturday.

I’m heading to Element early doors to grab one.
I may then get a second from my local GW. Currently undecided, but pre-order to release crosses over with payday, so I’ll certainly be able to afford it.
However, I’m not entirely sure this will be scalped quite so heavily. From what we’ve seen of unboxings, these look to be full production kits, rather than box specific (such as Deffkoptas, the Gravis Captain and so on). So there’s nothing in them, barring the rule book, we won’t be able to pick up further down the line. So even if scalping sods do try to create false scarcity, there’s less reason to rely on them.

Some of the models - like the new four legged necron walker- are likely "exclusive" as pushfit designs much like the redemptors from the Sisters of Battle set. However the general release of those models will likely have more parts, more options and be in general more valued for those options.
Of course its expected that those pushfit designs will get bundled into getting started sets so, yeah there's nothing in this box that is a true "limited" product. Though one might end up waiting a year to get some content.
But things like the rulebook and such won't be limited - if they are then like most GW limited edition manuals it will just be a different hardback cover rather than anything inside the book itself.

I don't think they've ever said anything is exclusive to this set, just that the combination of contents is exclusive.

I registered interest in a box
I did the same with Dark Sphere. I think I registered fairly early, so I bloody hope I get one.
I tell you what I would really like to see for the GW pre-order - instead of being allowed to order three copies, on day one, you can only order one box per person. If there any left, you can order multiple copies on subsequent days. Admittedy, you'd still get some people ordering multiples by getting one per family member, but there is still a practical limit to that. And ordering one for your seven family members is much better than ordering three each for your seven family members!

some of the actual models will be exclusive to either this set or a future start collecting/starter set, as they are one the same sprues as other stuff. if they have individual prices it will be for a different future model

This math only works if you would have bought the contents separately - most of us wouldn't. In reality buying Indomitus means spending £125 instead of £200-ish if you collect one of the armies present or £125 instead of £0 if you don't (value of Core book not taken into account).
That being said, Indomitus is still heck of a good deal if you want the contents and good deal even if you want only half of the contents. My point was that comparing to real retail price of the contents may be misleading.
I don't collect Primarines or Necrons but I am going to buy Indomitus because it is a huge box of pretty models for good price. I will likely buy some reinforcements for one or both armies which means that I will end up spending hundreds of pounds more than I would have without Indomitus. I am the target audience.

You are asuming competitive market, his is more close to a monopoly. Also doing a pricier box first, then releasing an other smaller cheaper box is a kind of a price discrimination.

All the "why don't GW just make MORE OF THE THING" crew seem to be overlooking that 1. they don't have infinite manufacturing capacity, especially at the moment; 2. warehouse space to store excess inventory costs money; 3. if everyone who wants this gets one, they reduce the market for the separate kits down the line. Sure, it's a mild bummer to miss out on some toys you wanted, but I'm sure the content hose will spray out something else new and exciting in due course.
