It'd be a unit specific rule (like Shock Assault on Marines or certain Warlord Traits).

Per the core rules, there is nothing the grants a bonus attack simply for assaulting.

Some units, particularly Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines have a rule that gives them +1 attack on charges (and when receiving a charge or using Heroic Intervention). Those rules are Shock Assault and Hateful Assault respectively.

In older editions, all units did get +1 attack when charging, but that isn't the case in 8th or soon 9th edition. Unless you have a special rule for it, you don't.

It was a rule in older editions. Now only some specific units has it and it's listed in their datasheets. If it's not there then the unit won't get +1 attack on charges.

So over all, you dont get +1 to charge? because they were pretty adamant that all units got this.

I just played Goff Orks so all my boys, deff dreads, you name it, had +1 attack on charges.

My first opponent yesterday didnt say anything like it, but these 2 guys were sure in their cause.

And im new so what do i know.

Hope, is the first step on the road to disappointment.

In fairness, Shock Assault isn't on some of the units as the rule wasn't standard at the edition launch and some books aged poorly due to the beta rule changes that were finalized.

8th made a mess of the physical printed books because some units had traits/abilities added AFTER print (Bolter Discipline, Hateful Assault, Shock Assault), or were fundamentally changed how printed rules worked (manifesting Smite, drop reserves).

Definitely head over to the warhammer community page and get the FAQ/Update publications... it sucks, but it could clear up some of the confusion if they're using new/updated rules from 3 years of updates/FAQs. Or, just hold on for a few weeks and 9th edition will blast a lot of that away as there will be a single source of truth (until they start the update train... again). Print books suffer the most in the age of streaming updates :( And with their shops still pushing printed books when all of the updates are going to the digital ones... zzz.

I am not sure what rule Orks have that would globally give this out. So it could be players latched onto rules from older editions that are mixing various editions and how things worked then with how they think they work now. I'd say it was an honest mistake. But, per the core rules, you do not receive any additional attacks for charging, but you do get to fight in the "chargers" portion of the fight phase (which gives you priority over all the units that just got charged).

I doubt anyone was doing anything malicious, but sounds like there was definitely some confusion in the rules As long as it is applied equally to everyone, though, it shouldn't upset things TOO much.

What armies were the other guys playing? Orks definitely do not get a +1 bonus on the charge. They get 'Ere We Go which lets them re-roll charge distances, so they're better at making a charge. The Warboss has WAAAGH!, which allows you to charge after Advancing on one turn, so you can surge forward faster than most other armies. Lastly, the Goff kulture is basically Dakka Dakka Dakka for melee attacks: each hit dice that rolls a 6 generates another attack, which you roll to hit with again.

If the other players only play Space Marine factions, I guess I could see where they get confused, since both those armies get +1 attack on the charge for all their own units.

oh yea i dont think it was malicious at all they were good guys. Besides i had most units so it benefitted me the most I used a bunch of Goff Boys so it turned it to an absolute shitstorm of melee hits xD

The waaagh! is here xD

They said it was a universal rule that all just got it.

But they used death guard, and the other used Dark templar.. or Black templar. something templar and they were dark. and melee'ish.

But they said it was just a general over all rule

Yeah, that used to be the rule in older editions, but that hasn't been the case for several years. Not to be confrontational, but the next time it comes up I'd ask them where in the rules it says so. It'll be a good learning opportunity for them.

i think i did say that, but since im new, im also not so adamant to say: show me where in the rulebook it states this!

Cant remember what they said.

But oh well its okay. i just wrote one of them and said it wasnt so. again it benefitted me the most so it wasnt to get me down really.

Sometimes the hardest thing to track are when things get cut from the rules. Especially ones as loosely written as 40k. For 7 editions you got a bonus attack on the charge. Then in 8th you didn’t. But it’s not like there is a line in the rulebook saying “you do not get an extra attack on the charge”. So older players who don’t follow the rumors, or web pages, and just play in their own circles might not even question it. They would need to scrub every possible place In the rules looking for where it might be.

There have been RPGs where my entire group played thing wrong for multiple editions. Not due to any conscious choice, just raw inertia. Then someone sat down and did the legwork, to find out when something was last an actual rule.

Death Guard and Black Templar models will most likely have Shock Assault, it was a bonus rule added to "Make Marines Great Again" circa 2018 or 2019 or so. So it may or may not appear on their data slates. I think Death Guard most likely wouldn't have it, but Black Templar probably should (Death Guard is one of the aging Codices right now, where Black Templar is in a more recent publication).

Orks, however, do not have those rules so would not benefit. Though most of the time, they throw enough attacks at a high enough strength that if they get there... they're going to pummel whatever they get in touch with (even without the extra attack in many cases).

There's a myriad of reasons why they would have done it... maybe they thought Shock/Hateful Assault was a global rule for everyone... or they may have been trying to spice the game up in your favor a little to get you hooked. Regardless, it was an "oops" in your favor Enjoy it for what it was and the awesome story it'll be later down the line!

I asked him on messanger like an hour ago and he said he was mistaken, he thought the rule he had (Hateful assault) was a general thing everyone had with just a different name.

So thats that

Hope, is the first step on the road to disappointment.
