It's an arbitrary number yes, but we're getting close!

Welcome to the DakkaDakka Gallery - 995785 Images and Counting!

At over 150 images a day we're not far from that milestone of one million gallery images.

I've been the gallery mod since... oh dear... let's just say several years OK. And reviewed the lion's share of these images and they never fail to impress me with the quality, work and originality I see every day. I can't say how much money this job has cost me when I was inspired by someone's work.

Of those (almost) million images I think this Falcon by Kiril Kanaev/The Yellow One" is the current winner with almost 5000 votes and a nearly perfect score.

But honestly this Crisis Suit by atropos907 may take the crown, fewer votes but a stunning conversion.

But my personal favorite is this sculpted figure of Haviland Tuf by Nakatan. Not only is it amazing but it got me to read the Tuf series of novels to see what inspired such devotion.

The novels are good too.

So let's take a minute to appreciate all the incredible work that has gone into the Dakka Gallery since it opened in 2006 with our founder Russ Wakelin's preview of the Starship Troopers drop ships (which I don't think ever came out )

What are your favorites?

I should spend more time voting on images. The gallery is full of great stuff.

Here's a question Kid. As contributors and users of the Dakka Gallery is there something we could be doing better that would make your job easier or the gallery a better resource?
More votes? better tagging? Image titles? What's the thing that would make a real difference?
I can imagine a million images might be a pain in the throne to curate.

Thanks for asking!

Tags are certainly the most useful thing to add both for searches on Dakka and for search engines. I don't know how many times I've been looking for some information or ideas and google had brought me back here with the image I was looking for.

It's more of an art than a science, but usually I like to put game/manufacturer, faction and whatever unique point I see about the image. Basically what might people be looking for whens searching.

WIP shots are also really useful, even if you don't want to expose them for votes they're good for anyone wanting to see how a model was done or what it looked like raw.

Ok thanks. I'll try to remember that when voting in the future. Actually with the amount of pictures I've uploaded myself I should try to better at tagging my own images too. I'll have to sit down some time and make an effort.

Thanks for all your work keeping the Dakka Gallery awesome. Come to think of it it was someone else talking about getting lost down a rabbit hole of Dakka Gallery voting that pointed me to Dakka in the first place, and loving it that made me want to know more and ultimately become a log time Dakkanaut.

I always get excited when someone comments on my artwork I have in the gallery. Much of it was drawn specifically to be posted here.

Once a month or so I’ll take 10-15 minutes to just wander through some random images and leave some votes and tags It’s quite relaxing and I figure every little helps in terms of improving the database. Plus occasionally you stumble on something really amazing or inspiring.

I've gone through the galleries a lot and tried to vote some time, but i admit that i haven't tagged anything. I'll try doing it more often!

Any which way it's an impressive milestone so well done to... everyone. All the peoples and their pictures.

I make it a point to try and tag at least four or five other pictures after posting my own or voting for something that shows up on the front page.

I find it funny how often I see family members stuff front and center when loading the page up though!

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Uploading my stuff is easily one of my favorite parts of this site, and for at least a few days after I've put something up, I go back to check on the veiws and votes. It's always really fun to see comments, what's getting a lot of attention etc (for the life of me I'll never understand why my most viewed image is a Dark Eldar Kabalite with an unfinished base, but there we go...). One of the best things about this community, and one that I think doesn't get talked about very often is just how positive the modelling side is - People being gakky and snobby about less-than-amazing paint jobs isn't really a thing. Most people are full of tips and positive criticism, and I think that's really great. As someone who was new to the hobby when they started posting here, I really appreciated the P&M crowd, and I'm proud to say that to this day everyone seems as supportive as ever. It never fails to make my day to see a new vote, or comment or some sudden extra veiws!

Special shoutout to the Mods, and to anyone who regularly peruses the Gallery - I try to, when I can! - but super super special shoutout to KidKyoto, your effort is pretty plain, and your enthusiasm for stangers work is as admirable as it is heartwarming. Thanks for doing what ya do!

Pretty impressive milestone! I always spend a few minutes looking through the random galleries every time I log in. Even stuff that's non-40k related. I love seeing people's creativity which now seems to be absent in a lot of the Geedubs showcase stuff and things like WhiteDwarf.

Agreed it's such a great resource. And a great way to spend 10 mins each time you visit the forum.

My only desire for change is some way of viewing only pictures of completed/painted minis. I seem to get a lot of photos of the back of a leg (often blurred) on a sprue. I know these are just WIP pics from someone's blog though and it's not too onerous to just move to the next one.

Also - where is the picture of the warbikes riding upside down on the ceiling when you need it?

I remember when the Gallery started, it was great to finally host pictures onsite instead of linking to photobucket. There was a big push in the beginning to vote on a bunch of images because nothing had ratings.

I'll shamelessly plug my highest rated image:

There sort of is, but it relies on users marking the 'Disable voting' box when they upload their WIP pics.

Generally I turn off stuff that is clearly not to be voted on, but when there's a figure there, even the most generic, I leave it turned on.

So yeah I'd ask people to turn off images that are just for reference. An unpainted but assembled model... maybe. Unpainted and converted certainly. But please do turn off any pictures of bits, paints, workspaces etc.

Done.

By the way: is there any way to filter for "only untagged images"? Now and then I'm in the mood to help tag a bunch of stuff to improve the gallery, and it would be a pretty cool feature if I could filter explicitly for those.

Ah yes I do tag mine like that.

Has anyone seen the upside down ork bikers recently?

I know it's stupid and really just where someone uploaded and upside down photo but I find it so funny for some reason.

Some very nice looking minis!

Yes unfortunately mine have not got too many votes.. Showing some of my own here, I refuse to believe that there are not 5 Bill Hicks fans on Dakka who won't vote on this one!

Would it be possible to have voting disabled be the default and require uploaders to choose to enable voting on their pictures? @Kid_Kyoto

I'm pretty sure 99% of WIP pictures up for voting is not pictures that people want rated, but just that they didn't notice the option. It would motivate me at least to do more rating of pics, if I could avoid getting so much unpainted and clearly unfinished stuff popping up.

I try to remember to click off the vote for most of my WIP, but sometimes forget. Same with the “I own this”. I don’t re-post stuff from elsewhere; everything I upload is a pic I took.

I remember this question being brought up before? Forget how long ago.

I used to try to keep my number of votes around the level of pics I uploaded. Just to try to pay back all the votes I (theoretically) got. Fell behind on that, I should get back to it.
