Hi! I just got into epic armageddon! I tried a game and like the rules. My minis are from vanguard.

Here are some flesh tearers and angels of porphyr I painted.

Welcome! Welcome!

Those are some lovely little marines, an incredible level of detail you have achieved with them.

Are you painting up a full force for both chapters?

Thank you! I was thinking of getting all the minis for the "get started" scenarios, so there is quite a lot of work to do

I really like the lore for armageddon, so i'm trying to stick to those chapters who were there. I might do some mixed forces though, like having excorcists and flesh tearers make up one side.

It's really good to have a project/target like that as it gives you a defined scope for what you want to achieve. Mine is 'paint Space Marine Legion and Ork Horde' which means I am just keeping going with no end goal in sight

I have just finished a couple of characters (Techmarine and Apothecary) for my Crusade-era World Eaters. These are a mix of minis from Vanguard ranges, as well as a few classic GW plastics mixed in. The Techmarine is accompanied by some Androids (from the old mixed plastic sprue I think). I know the colourings aren't correct for their Rhinos (or for the marines themselves actually) but I wanted a way for them to be identifiable on the tabletop.

They look sweet. Did you make the little banners yourself? What materials were used?

Thanks man - yes the banners were just some small bits of thick printing paper with an old Epic banner pole - although I also use paper clips - paint and then varnish to keep sealed, then with a decal (I think from FW 30k range) on top.

Foil from bottle etiquettes or paste tubes is another traditional material, which is relatively easy to shape however you wish.

I have looked at all the pictures in this thread and come to the conclusion that I have been wasting my hobby time. After this HH army is done I'm going Epic and never looking back.

Who wants to trade toys? LOL!

Well, it will definitely be easier on the bank account.

Especially when you can get all those big shiny FW superheavies in epic scale for fractions of the cost. i think my macharius's from vanguard were like $10 each.

Luckily, joining that club is very easy

So what armies will you be doing?

Welcome to the one true path, Hairesy!

And only 9000 points on your painting table? Well, that might be OK just for starters!

Well I suppose I'll be looking to replicate my personal favorite Chapter, the Lamenters, of which I have a few points in 40k. That should be a good start, I've always enjoyed the Badab War so I it would be great if I could do another BW Chapter, one that my Lamenters could fight, say Minotaurs or Novamarines. Then perhaps I'll branch out into Chaos, always been a big World Eaters fan as well. Also don't mind Biel Tan either.

Seems as though the sky is the limit when the models are so small! Hopefully the wife agrees...

Well you have options, as you go through the old post you can see many of the finished armies myself and others have posted, rather you wish for 30K or 40K armies you can pretty well do whatever your heat desires. i built every 40K army i ever wanted in epic scale, that i would never have had the time or money to do in full scale.

I was particularly intrigued by the fellow playing 40K rules with his 6mm figures. Seems like a great way to play with your minis while you build up the points level.

That would probably be me

We use the index 8th ed rules. it is super simple-no facings, no terrain interaction other than giving +1 to armor saves or blocking LOS. and there are only 3 stratagems that are available to all factions. we just halve all the ranges for movement and weapons ranges.

The detachment system at the start of 8th makes building an epic scale army however you want much easier than using the actual old epic rules (our guard player could not build his current force under the epic rules). it also gives the units a bit more flavor than the old epic rules.

It takes about 2 hours to play an equivalent 10K point game at this scale with those rules. it also gives real meaning to the usefulness of transports. things like the thunderhawk transporter, valkyrie lifter, the orca tau transport etc... become incredibly useful where in a normal 28mm game the table is too small for them to have any real impact other than as display models.

28mm 40K games have often been describes as a small section of the front lines where your forces are fighting as part of a larger battle. epic gives you the opportunity to be the entire battleline instead of just a section.

I have owned a couple different flyers since 6th and always found them to be too big. Even on a 6x4 table they don't seem to have enough room.

Where should I look for minis? I'd prefer not to get them from overseas though. Canada Post is absolute crap and not likely to get better any time soon. What ought I keep an eye out for if I happen to find a decent game shop?

There are a whole bunch of different Epic rules Hairesy, I would definitely check some of them out as by many opinions they are some of the best rulesets that GW has ever released.

As well as being able to get hold of the original Space Marine or Titan Legion rules, here are a few listed below. This is from a new Epic player guide which is linked in my sig (and people are probably getting sick of me plugging )

Armageddon (also called 'NetEpic' and 'NetEpic Armageddon' - the currently live & ongoing development of the 4th edition of the game) http://epic-uk.co.uk/wp/rules/ or https://www.net-armageddon.org/rules.html
NetEpic Gold (a 'finalised', and very nicely presented, version of 1st/2nd edition Epic Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine) http://www.netepic.org/netepic.html
Epic 40,000 (based on GW's 3rd edition of the game - the very fast/streamlined, but short-lived, one) https://app.box.com/s/u2lp17fjol5izgcihdcwz4liulm7v8mr
Imperius Dominatus From the creators of NetEpic Gold, Horus Heresy/30k ruleset. Rules and army lists freely downloadable from the website. Plans to release alien factions (everything from 40k and Epic historically)

There are a lot of different opinions on which system is superior, but what is undeniable is that each gives a different play experience. Armageddon (at least in the UK) is a really popular tournament game - it's a very 'tight' system of rules and very tactical. If you play it you will totally see what I mean, I would say it's a 'proper' wargame, for anyone that has played historicals or games of that nature. You have to use combined arms, really think about combinations of attack and defense, cross-fires etc.
I personally prefer NetEpic Gold because it's a community-revised version of Epic Space Marine 2nd edition (game from early 90s - probably GWs most popular and highest selling Epic game) which I loved, and some of the armies (Orks and Chaos in particular) are a lot more fun to play. It also gives more of a feel of a commander looking down on a mass battle and planning a strategy as you have to give orders at the start of a turn and then are stuck with them, so you have to try and predict what your opponent is doing - I really like that side of it.
Epic 40,000 was described by Jervis Johnson as the best version of the game. It's the one I have least experience of but is meant to be very fast and smooth to play.

The great thing of course is that with some very minor variations you can use the same miniature collection for all of them, and see which you like the most!

I live on the west coast of the US and i have had zero problems with vanguard miniatures. even based in the UK he gets my stuff to me within a week.

They have guard, eldar, orks, machanicus, space marines(including chaos) some large nids like the hierophant in 15mm

https://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/product-category/defeat-in-detail-6mm/

The other big company is onslaught miniatures based in the USA

They have sisters, guard, tau, dark eldar, all the rest of the nids, kroot, chaos and even squats

https://www.onslaughtmini.com/11-6mm-sci-fi

Your other option is to look around for the 3d print services like scourge scenics for guard, space marine and ork vehicles.

https://www.scourgescenics.co.uk/shop/product-category/6mm

the only place i know of that has a large collection of necron stuff is trolls under the bridge.

https://www.trolls.cz/

damn they have a nice monolith mini now....must resist the urge

some of the other guys here like sherrypie and pacific can point you towards more of the 3d print stuff than i can.

I found at least with Epic it is much easier to sneak stuff in through the door, and a lot of stuff can arrive safely in a small Jiffy bag, which arouses a lot less suspicion

I'm glad i married a gamer. my wife doesn't care what i get, or how long i spend at the FLGS on game night. of course, i self regulate and spend more time on terrain now than building armies.

I am at the point i think i have enough stuff to keep me busy between the 10+ games i play to the point many of them have not seen the table in a while. lately classic battletech, warmachine and DUST have been in heavy rotation, infinity and heavy gear less so. although i am feeling the urge for some castles in the sky or epic 40K.

Those look really great Albertorius. Will you be adding any crew to them or anything like that?

Those ones at the back are carrying some very large looking firepower! I would say a high chance the one on the right especially might do a 360 in the air if it fires

So i got a training game in for epic 40K using the index 8th ed rules at half ranges-

My opponent decided to try out my necrons. i went with the arch rivals the eldar. the war in heaven continues.

We were right around 300PL or 6K game of necrons VS eldar (iyanden).

With 4 superheavies on both sides it turned into a very bloody mess. the eldar made the necrons pay for it but, in the end they came up a bit short. both sides lost their HQs (the revenant exploding got one of the lords), the eldar lost all of their superheavies, and most of their heavy tank support. on the flip side the necrons lost 2 of 4 pylons but also most of their sizable air force. starting with 12 and ending with just 3.

The entire game lasted 5 turns and about 2 hours.
