Epic game day at the club, four tables of Epic: Armageddon. Eldar, Death Guard, hellforged monstrosities, screaming mutants, Imperial Fists and a Guard's armoured battalion (my force) bashed it out through the day.

Also took a WIP family photo of Selen II's tankers, even if many of them still languish without their proper highlights...

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Beautiful work with that army as always Sherrypie! It must be great playing across that sort of terrain.

Some photos from a small EA game. During the Great Crusade, the Dyun-Kel Craftworld launches a surprise attack on a world recently 'brought into compliance' by the World Eaters. For their own enigmatic reason, their target was a World Eater commander who was travelling with a diplomatic delegation through a train yard. Given only moments to respond after learning of the assault, a small tactical detachment garrisons the train yard.

The game objective was very simple: Control of the World Eater train & commander by the end of turn 4. All troops expendable. Multiple forward Aeldari units were available from turn 1, while only a small marine garrison was in position to defend. Each turn other units would arrive from reserve (3+ for Eldar, 4+ for marines, getting easier each turn).

Forward recon elements of the Aeldari arrive quickly, a Falcon detachment keeping the marine assault troops pinned behind some monorails. Despite itching to assault, marine command knows this would be almost suicidal. Their orders: hold position until reinforcements arrive.

An Aspect Warrior formation, comprised of Howling Banshees and Singing Blades, assaults the garrison. Despite some quite shocking dice rolling resulting in a few of their number being lost, the overwhelming assault and Falcon tank support wipes out the defenders to a man.

Reinforcements arrive. The assault troops, being pinned for a few turns and seeing their brothers in arms gunned down, finally rev their chain blades and leap in to assault. But, the wily alien commander realised what the marine did not, that the Grav Tanks could hover frustratingly just out of reach. Outnumbered, hit by more scatter laser fire while they attempted to fire pistols and throw grenades at tanks, the remains of the assault detachment were wiped out.

Nearby and hidden in a copse of trees, a World Eaters recon unit dispassionately report in enemy troop movements.

The cavalry arrive! Firstly, a tactical detachment, whose close range assault is more than adequate to bring down the rest of the Falcon units.

Terminators teleport in and a Land Raider squadron arrives from the north. Caught in the crossfire, the Aeldari suffer heavy losses. Finally, a unit of Berserkers charge in howling, and hack the remains of the unit apart as they try to withdraw. Kaela Mensha Kaine weeps with the loss of so many souls to the barbarians.

Devastators appear on the treeline, whilst Fire Dragons cover the Eldar retreat.

A little Easter Egg under the spoiler..
Spoiler:

After the Aeldari have withdrawn, Marine command realises that several Berserker marines have not appeared for role-call. Having had this happen before with the newly indentured Berserker units, members of the Legion Field Police units are deployed into local inhabited areas...

I'm making a start in earnest to get some terrain made up and painted by the end of the year for a small display, eventually to take me to a full board.

I used the TMG terrain which has been fine, but it definitely needs a bit of pizazz so I have a manufactorum set next to liven it up a bit with scatter and some cranes.

I made a decent chunk of buildings from the kickstarter campaign, with some pieces left over to make ramps etc. I decided to make a centrepiece building. It measures just over 12 inches, and is just over 6 inches deep. It is tall enough to hide a Warlord, so it'll work well for AT too. I made one other static piece (the ruin) and plan to bulk out the rubble with texture paste etc.

My attempt earlier this week to take out tyranids, using alternating teleporting terminators and drop pod marines.

After 3 turns of minor phyric gains, my marines forces were depleted, and the tyranids had full bellies and few losses. The critters clawed their way to an easy win while my 4 terminator formations and 2 tactical was reduced to empty discarded tin cans.

My strategy will go back to the drawing board.

All makes me want to see Epic return fully fledged.

I can even make some kind of argument that Marines in a 40K version should be folded in as a Detachment for Imperial Guard.

See….1,000 Marines isn’t many. And we know that the Guard are the resilient and flexible backbone of His forces. Massive Marine armies make sense in Heresy Era, but not 40K.

May not go down well with Marine players, but I think it would look more “right”. It would also allow just a few squads to be Turbo Nutters.

Could even extend this logic to Guard being The Imperial Faction, with everyone else (Sisters, Marines, Custards et al) being elite Detachments.

Mechanicus though have the numbers to be an entirely independent force.

Thing is even in Legions Imperialis youre typically not fielding more than a couple hundred marines even in larger games, which is perfectly in line with 40k level astartes deployments.

Just showing off my ever growing Emperor’s Children. The color scheme is meant to imply their recent corruption rather than looking like ‘evil’ loyalists.

I still buy the larger GW kits as their ability to capture detail still really shines, but all the smaller stuff is 3d printed by me. I can’t go back now that I can edit files with legion icons, and customized models.

Looking forward to reorganizing the force, now that we are emerging from the beta test phase if Legions Imperialis.

They look good, but I thought the convention was that deep purple was pre-corruption EC, and the more pinkish they get, the more corrupted they are. With that interpretation, yours look fairly far along already.

I also saw an official explanation that was the Heresy proceeded, the Emperors Children proved unable to procure white pigment for their shoulderpads, but that is so silly an idea that I have decided to ignore it for my own EC...

Never underestimate the scarcity of titanium dioxide, even on a galactic level.

I'd rather GW left the game in the communities hands. Epic armageddon (the only edition I've tried) is already fully fledged and playable, and I appreciate the slower update cycles the community has compared to GW edition churn.

GW revisiting “full” Epic doesn’t take that away though. Those who are happiest playing a given edition (official or fan) can and will do so.

But for everyone else? The models become readily available. Sure, I could 3d print them, but that would involve buying a 3d Printer, figuring it out and finding STLs I like.

Which isn’t something I’m terribly interested in doing, when I’d far rather just nip down my FLGS or pop online and order whatever I want to add.

While I appreciate plastic models, as the material is easier to work with for funky conversions, that's not a fair comparison. You don't need to print stuff yourself nor fiddle with the files. It's not much extra work these days to just go "hm, I like that design, let me find a 3d printing service that will handle it and mail me 4000 copies of whatever it was I needed". Or as is often the case, have hobby buddies who will do the same without the ordering part.

“Recent corruption” doesn’t mean no corruption. They have begun altering their armor and engaging in debauchery, but they aren’t covered in mutations nor has the Legion broken up into splinter warbands. So, yes, I stand by my interpretation of the theme. I also noted early on that dark purple armor in this scale does not transfer well at all to the tabletop. No matter how well i painted it, it failed to pop. The lavender went a long way in that regard, relegating the purple to the recessed armor plates and shoulders.

I'm not sure, I worry about the flood of cease and desists the gw lawyers will start putting on 3rd party manufacturers, if GW revisits that scale.

Got through a fair chunk of bases over the bank holiday weekend in preparation to move onto my Space Marine army that's been in my pile of shame since release. My Solar Aux are nearly done, just oils to go for the majority.

I finished up a couple of Warhounds in addition. First time popping titans on LI bases and for as much as I like them, they seem to warp!

Some amazing work there Tyranid Horde and some amazing Emperor's Kids there Rivetbull! That scheme works really well with them, I love it when that sort of thought is put into an army concept.

Re. the full Epic 40k returning, I think it's probably a moot point unfortunately. GW's money men will look at the amount of Legions stock still sat on shelves (which has been my experience of it recently unfortunately) and put it down to a fault of the scale rather than it being due to them not marketing the game and making a game that is inaccessible. And even if they did go ahead with it, I don't know how they would manage the mass of SKUs that such a game would create (you have to think back to Epic 2nd and 3rd editions, more or less a full third of a GW shop wall was covered with Epic games). Although, I will caveat that I was completely wrong about Squats returning, so..

In the meantime, I gave a friend an intro game of Armageddon with his Dark Mechanicum (using Iron Warriors rules, at least until the EpicGT rules group get that army list done). Using Defiler rules for the smaller walkers and Decimator (I think?) rules for the larger ones, those things are nasty! My infantry-heavy force got very much decimated (or whatever the opposite word is, when you lose 90% instead of just 10%). The Kratos were the only thing that performed admirably, driving back a Warhound, but in the end it was a narrow loss for the Night Lords on objectives.

Great photos Pacific! I see some vanguard terrain in there, do you mind sending some more pics of it if you can? I've got a bunch of my own I need inspo for.

In the meantime, nearing the end of my Solar Aux pile of shame, although I have just purchased 2 support boxes for £20 and some dracosans...

These dudes need oils and some more weathering to call them good! (pic is a bit washed out, the yellow is much richer.

Had my first game with the Open Engine War cards. They're fun and not as fiddly as I feared, although I think I will still prefer proper narrative missions.

Here's Legio Danica facing off against the pearlescent Legio Iris:

The outcome was in jeopardy all the way to the end - if the Legio Iris Reaver on the left had been destroyed in the final round, then I would have won:

Alas, I did not. But I was playing with a friend who's had rotten luck for a while, so I was glad to see him win for once.

The deck is great, yeah. There are some extra fiddly ones, like the table that crumbles away at random, but generally they are reasonably straightforward to use.

The neat bit is of course how easily one can combine various existing missions, effect lists and scenario generators for thousands of different but sensible matches.
