I know fun is subjective. But I'm looking for a fun army to play with my friends, then can compete someone competitively.

I feel like I'm falling out of love with 40k and struggling to choose an army I enjoy. I've got a large imperial guard army that I don't play anymore, so I'm trying to find an army to fill that void.

Any suggestions would really help. Any playstyle and theme, as long as I can read into them.

Firstly how competitive are we talking here? Super WAAC meta-lists or do you just want an even balance of wins and losses?
I don't want to give recommendations until I know what kind of environment you play in.

SoB , DE or Ad Mecha are very fun to play with. Strong enough to carry less optimal options to a degree.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Yeah, can we get more details? We're happy to help give advice, but we don't want to lead you astray.

amazing how you always equate "fun" with "win".

I'd say a really fun army to play is Harlequins, and they are quite competitive.

You have great movement, reasonable shooting, excellent melee, and they have some unique ways to interact with an opponent. Can really open up painting opportunities (don't have to do diamonds), and well....they're clowns, so of course they are fun.

I've found Deathwatch to be quite fun. Teleporting some flamer Aggressors behind enemy lines to barbecue some squishy troops is hella fun and DW open up loads of modelling opportunity due to the mixed Chapter system. Switching Chapter tactics on a unit can lead to some fun times as well. 10 Assault Intercessors suddenly getting the Flesh Tearers rules is a scary thing.

Okey tell me this. What is easier to achive. Fun with the DE or Ad mecha codex or fun with the GSC codex right now. Also good pick of an army. Harlis were the top army up until the DE and AD mecha craziness became a thing.

I support Admech, DE and Sisters- not just because they're strong but because they have the best Crusade content, which could be something you do for the fun games with your circle of friends. I find that the extra layer of watching and guiding how your units grow over time to be the perfect remedy for that "Samey" feeling that any game can get if you play it long enough and often enough.

And using any of these armies, you're also going to be okay in competitive games.

Also: keep in mind that there is likely a new IG dex not far off, which might rekindle some of the enthusiasm for what you already have, and it will include Crusade option too.

And then there's Kill Team on the way, so there's that. Plastic Kriegers to slot into your existing 40k army plus a whole other game.

Taking a break is an option.

If you're feeling burnt out on 40K, go do something else for a while.

Or try a new game. Your 40K stuff will still be there when you're ready to go back.

It entirely depends on the people you play with. Maybe I'm just blessed with playing buddies who are just decent people, but if one of our group would want to play GSC, every other player who plays DE or admech would tone down their list so that everybody can have fun. It's also an opportunity to try new lists and/or fun lists.

It's different for tournaments or course, but I would argue you can have fun in the hobby without playing tournaments.

My recommendation is as always: pick the faction whose models you enjoy painting and looking at.

Ok so don't shoot me when I say this - but go with generic space marines. Now listen me out first.....

For me, fun is the ability to have vastly different experiences and do things differently - rather than just play the one, same, playstyle every single game. And this is where generic marines really do shine as you can make them any of the chapters - even Blood Angels and Dark Angels etc (for rules purposes)

Pros:
You can play a gunline army if you wish
You can play an assaulty army if you wish
You can play a slow army if you wish
You can play a fast army if you wish
You can play an army that has lots of armour if you wish
You can play an army that has lots of troops if you wish

and so on and so on. Give standard marines credit - they are extremely versatile and as such you could play dozens of games and each one you could bring a vastly different playstyle.

The other thing to consider as an option is an Imperium army. Some marines, supported by Guard tanks, an assassin, an inquisitor, some sisters of battle etc. Don't get me wrong, it'll probably suck but it's not always about winning - especially if you are playing against an opponent who isn't very good. The upcoming Imperium magazines from Hatchette will allow you to build this kind of army, bit by bit, over time and quite cheaply as well.

Depends entirely upon what type of player you are.
I could have good amounts of fun with either the GSC or Admech. Though I doubt my Admech would be built to the current meta standards....
DE? That'd probably provide me the least fun - especially the current meta build as I don't like the models. My ideal DE list would have zero elves in it if I could manage it....

It's Karol, they play in literally the most toxic, WAAC, metagaming environment in existence and cannot comprehend any other state of existence. They are the real-life equivalent of Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

I suggest armies you like the lore for. My favorite is admech and necrons, so I'm lucky if I ever want to play 9th. I might with grey knights, as I think they're cool. But I was tired of 40k, so I tried a different game, Infinity. It's low model count, quick, and you can use 40k models if you don't feel like buying new ones.

If you have a lot of guard models, Ariadna is low tech, rely on your normal human a lot, and their stuff is so low tech they're unhackable.

‘What Lorgar’s fanatics have not seen is that these gods are nothing compared to the power and the majesty of the Machine-God. Already, members of our growing cult are using the grace of the Omnissiah – the true Omnissiah, not Terra’s false prophet – to harness the might of the warp. Geller fields, warp missiles, void shields, all these things you are familiar with. But their underlying principles can be turned to so much more. Through novel exploitations of these technologies we will gain mastery first over the energies of the empyrean, then over the lesser entities, until finally the very gods themselves will bend the knee and recognise the supremacy of the Machine-God"

I agree with a lot of what's early been said. It'll depend on your interests. At the end of the day, you're going to spend more time planning, building, and painting an army than you are playing it. So it's gotta be something you care about.

I agree that you should use one of the newer books, particularly for Crusade content. But also because they're basically all in good places competitively.

If you want something that's more engaging to play, then try Dark Eldar or AdMech. They've got a lot of moving parts to keep track of, and they're very skill testing. The crazy meta-destroying versions are really just a couple specific builds, so you don't get a free ride just for picking them.

I think Space Marines are also a good suggestion. Pick a custom paint scheme and play them as a different faction any time you want. You'll get to try all kinds of builds.

Out of my 4 armies (Nids, GSC, AdMech, and BA), GSC games end up being the most entertaining.

Sure, they lose all the time and their rules are at the current rock bottom, but there's just something about those poor little dirty buggers bringing their work tools against the legendary superhumans that brings a smile to everyone involved.

I recently started playing knights, and I'm having a lot of fun with that. Not too many models to move around and less stuff to remember.

Harlequin player for Kill Team and 40K and found them easy to collect, build and paint. You don't have to paint the square pattern on them, which makes them even quicker to get to the table...

Sadly they tend to lose to Nids( lethal in close encounters ), so I've chosen Chaos Knights as my second, opposing army for modern 40K. I've bought a pair of Warglaives and found them very fast to assemble and paint, despite not having finished them. I'm doing more with them beyond their standard build and waiting on parts to arrive, but otherwise I would have had them done by now. I'm also stuck over whether to treat myself to full-sized, official chaos knight or settle for a pair of Helverins to complete a combat patrol, or wait until they release a CP boxset alongside the 9th edition codex...decisions, decisions...

Chaos Knights are also ideal for wild and imaginative kitbashing! I've gone for using Mindstealer heads for my Armigers and thought that House Sphiranx is as good a name as any...

I've yet to try it out but I reckon Knights are ideal as a hostile army for solo play, having a low model count an'all. Chaos Knights are also perfect bad guys...

You start a tremendous amount of "which army should I play" threads.

As said above, consider taking a break if nothing appeals to you.

Fun armies are tyranids, space wolves, orks and dark eldars. Altough your enemies can be tierd of playing vs dark eldar. All of these 4 armies have a good mix of shooting and melee. They have multiple things you can do, and lists you can build.
