2021 is coming quickly to a close, and it is time for us all to reflect on what we have achieved and accomplished for our hobby over the year.

I have a blog post up on the topic for those so inclined: http://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2021/12/random-close-of-another-year.html

The highlights are below:

1. No more pile of shame!
2. I painted 300+ miniatures this year, mostly ancients.
3. Published the 2nd of 3 Blue Books for Osprey- Wars of the Republic
4, Got three publications to my Wargame Vault page this year
5. Played about 2 games a month
6. Have a regular RPG group going
7. Improved my website and started a Patreon

Overall, not a bad year!

How about you? What did you finish up in 2021? Time to show off! Pictures are encouraged!

I completely lost my interest in the hobby once covid hit without games to motivate me. Now that my club has resumed I'm getting back into things.

I have almost finished painting the Pontic army I had on my painting desk 2 years ago, just 16 infantry and 2 chariots left.

I got in 3 games of ADLG this year.

*Painted:
50 pirates - for D&D
about a dozen random/misc minis - I didn't really keep count of these.
a huge amount of pirate related scatter terrain - stuff you'd find on a ship - I'm not really counting these
9 Talos, 9 Cronos, 1 Succubus, 1 Archon (further detailing on the Talos/Cronos will continue into Jan. But for all practical purposes they're painted)
4 Spindel Drones
2 Bore wurms
95 AoS Chaos Marauders/STD (60 foot, 30 horse, 5 chariots)
3 Transcendent CTan
15 Necron Deathmarks
Total: around 200 actual minis - I guess this made a dent in the pile??

Played (average):
2 minis games/week, (one of them always being either 40k Crusade or AoS league/PTG)
1 RPG/week (often as the DM)
Board Games once a week

Built: 2 new armies (Drukhari Talos/Cronos detachment, AoS Stormcast Dragons)

Ran a short lived AoS campaign
Continued to run a weekly D&D/PF campaign.

Taught 40k/Sigmar to 4 new players.

Spent alot of $.....

Painted record number of models getting damn close to 1000. Alas I bought even more...

AOS I was busy playing 81 games with winrate improving from last years 33% to 39.5%. Yey. Also doubled draws from 1 to 2 Albeit due to increase of games draw % went down...AOS3 makes draws super hard.

Organized 2 AOS tournaments as well plus attended 2 which were first for me as a player for over a year. Second one with funny nearly all mounted bonesplitter army and despite handicap of faction(and suboptimal version of bonesplitters) went 2-1 only losing to the tournament winner(who has funny habit of winning AOS tournaments here when he attends them). Albeit opposing lists weren't toughest lists out there on my wins either ;-)

Other than painting and playing I finally got 2 full WHFB armies, and tons of Necromunda stuff as well. Always loved that stuff but never found people willing to play those games before 1-2 years ago.

Now I have models to paint for the next 5-10 years, also considering that I'm planning to get lots of MDF terrain and scratch build other terrain as well, which is a relief considering that I don't like how new sculpts look in 40k, let alone their prices. The goal for the next 1-2 years is to have very good looking boards for home gaming, which I currently lack.

Next step will be joining groups of people who still play 6th edition of fantasy (it's still pretty popular here, more than AOS) and convince more people to give Necromunda a try.

Well, I stayed alive and I joined this forum.

Hobbywise, I played some good games of Kings of War, painted and based a small elf army, painted some armada ships, and got into the Lord of the Rings game.

I'm happy with that.

I got loads done this year, though not a lot of it was what I planned. Early in the year I was in my usual doldroms.
I got some D&D stuff finished and painted some more terrain pieces. Then in the autumn I stopped browsing the internet and started doing some hobby work every day.
I got a bunch of old space marine models out, stripped them and repaired them, and painted up a large space marine army for Grimdark Future. 30 tactical marines, 15 terminators, 10 assault marines, 10 scouts, 6 bikers, an attack bike and a land speeder storm, as well as a half dozen characters and a land raider. The models were a mix of stuff I'd accumlated from a variety of starter sets and some old metals and one off purchases. Some of it had been sitting untouched for over a decade. I sprayed it all army painter blue, washed it with old blue ink and just smashed out 80 minis in a month.

Then finally got some regular games in with a colleague from work while working on my brother's old imperial guard, and I've painted up over 50 of them and converted some civil war minis into a unit of rough riders. Really pleased with how the scheme is coming out. Then I assembled a bunch of tyranids I bought a few years ago and have been trying out an almost all contrast paint scheme on them. Along with a set of necromunda barricades and objectives I'm nearly at 365 minis for the year, which is amazing considering I barely picked up a brush for the first six months. Hoping to keep up the momentum into next year.

One thing I haven't done is keep posting progress on my blog here on dakka. I find photography a bit of a pain in the arse and I'm crap at it, and I've just been focusing on getting stuff done for games!

I got some models painted, did some dev on my game, and various other things. However, I think the biggest thing I did was dive into oil paints.

I had been using oil washes for a while now, but semi-randomly caught James Wappel on Twitch and started watching regularly. He's been doing miniatures for a long time and is a well recognized artist, and he's been doing models with 100% oil paints. I was like, "huh?" So after watching a few vids, I got a small set of other colors and gave it a try. I am now hopelessly addicted to this method/style, to the point where I'm actually putting all my acrylic paint racks up on the higher shelves rather than on my desk, so I have room for all my new oil paints.

Flock all tbh. The rumours of the upcoming NuBeakies killed my BA project and sent it to a suspended state.

Hoping to get back to some hobby once the NuBeakies are released

Typically I'm only interested in complete armies and I wanted 2 . After more than two decades in the hobby getting 500-1000 points of a new faction doesn't suit me, I want to kitbash and be able to play the army in the short period, even if it will be run as a grey plastic horde for a long time. I buy models every 5-6 years now, and only large lots, last purchase I did was during 7th edition.

Not to mention that those models were all WHFB related, Empire and Dark Elves, which still have lower old prices and might not be around forever. Some, the OOP models that I needed, were very good deals from 2nd hand markets, which I couldn't ignore.

I also wanted an hundred of Necromunda models .

Another triumph of KPI 0 for personal hobby painting

Sent about a dozen or so Guildball mini's to get commission painted, full Shepherds team and rounding out Alks, Navs and Union, so in theory the pile of same got smaller as besides a few Xwing ships I didn't buy anything

Played mostly Guildball and X-Wing

And as my school reports foresaw, could do better...

Not as much as I would've liked, many a lofty goal had been set throughout the year, but I wound up with maybe twenty odd minis actually done. A combination of a massive workload and depression hitting like a wrecking ball really put a damper on all things hobby related.

Personal highlight though was painting fourteen minis in three weeks time:

I bought, then painted 2 Questoris Knights, a Clan star for Btech, some figures for Stargrave, a second Vindicare to annoy rival players... so that's good, but in general I added more to the grey pile of shame (KT I'm looking at you), and didn't manage to play as much as I wanted.

My 2022 goal is to avoid adding to the pile unless I either paint, or sell something, but probably will fail 2 weeks into January.

Painted roughly 3,000pts of Undead for Kings of War, as well as about 2,000pts of Ogre Palace Guard/Elohi for Kings of War.

Started far more projects than I can possibly achieve.

Only managed to play a handful of games, of which I have come to the conclusion that I no longer enjoy Kings of War. Luckily there is a wide selection of mass combat fantasy games to play... that is once we get back to some sort of normality.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

I forgot one thing that I accomplished that I'm quite happy with which is: played a bunch of games with my family.

I don't get to see my nephews as often as I would like, and with Covid things have been even tougher, but we managed to get together more than we did in 2020, and played a bunch of fun games, some board games with minis, and some just making up our own little things with my figures.

That's the sort of thing that makes hobby stuff worth it, for me.

I painted 411 models this year mainly fantay models. I've now got 2 periods for my fantasy human army and a large contingent of Undead painted. I've also got a decent chunk of terrain made this year. Gaming my club restarted and I've got a Frostgrave campaign on the go we've been dabbling in Stargrave and I've also played Oathmark.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass.
