Come on queen_annes_revenge, share your fantasy figures and stand with us against space marines every March.
Vive la révolution!
Do you hear the miniaturists sing?
Singing the song of angry painters?
It is the music of the people
Who will not paint marines again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is art about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond those Space Marines
Are there other models you long to see?
Do you hear the miniaturists sing?
Singing the song of angry painters?
It is the music of the people
Who will not paint marines again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is art about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!
Will you paint all that you can
So that our banner may advance?
Some will finish and some will not (dam)
Will you stand up and take your chance?
Marine helmets on the ground
Will cover the bases all around!
Do you hear the miniaturists sing?
Singing the song of angry painters?
It is the music of the people
Who will not paint marines again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is art about to start
When tomorrow comes!
I have made some progress.

As enthusiastic as I may be about Oldhammer, I am also enamored with the Inq28 phenomenon. I love the idea of bringing Inquisitor gameplay to the 28mm scale tabletop. I was very excited to see Watch Captain Artemis:
He was clearly an update of Jes Goowin's amazing 54mm scale model of Battle Brother Artemis from the Inquisitor game:
So I bought him, But I wasn't quite satisfied with building the stock model. I wanted to bring it closer into alignment with Jes's original version. So, in the true Inq28 tradition, it was time to convert! I replaced Artemis's bionic arm and combi-weapon with a regular Deathwatch arm with a Deathwatch boltgun. I left his engraved power sword intact though; it was too cool to replace with a regular one.
While I used the legs, head, right arm, and the front half of Watch Captain Artemis for this model, I replaced the rear half of his body with the back half of a regular Deathwatch marine, though I had to carve it up considerably to make it fit, then fill in some gaps with greenstuff. I added a sheathed combat knife by using a knife handle from an old Tactical Marine and the sheath from the Reaver kit cut to a more reasonable size.
The backpack came from an old Tactical Marine kit from around 2004. As you can see, I had to rebuild part of his butt with greenstuff as well.
The new arm wouldn't simply attach at the correct angle. I had to build a shoulder joint from greenstuff and then sculpt some ribbing onto the underarm.
Obviously there are many other things I could have changed to make it even more like the original version, but I think I struck a good balance between the stock model and a full resculpt! Now maybe I can actually start painting for this painting contest!

Well, I can certainly help out team procrastination.
Very likely a ridiculous attempt considering my usual pace and the fact it's not even a finished build yet, but hey-ho...
Why have a submarine...

i am trying to make these look like lenses and not . . whatever is going on here. i used quite a few diff washes to give some kind of layering effect but it didn't turn out how i wanted it to. i'm terrified of having too much paint on my models obscuring detail. i am absolutely against stripping models. so, i am wondering if i can still walk this back and start over by dropping a black wash in the eyes and relayer the greens + a white a dot later? is there a way to know when you're reaching too much paint on a model?
there is two other, smaller problems. the filigree on the dagger on the models back and the white space on the splinter rifle is worrisome. there is also one other tiny problem, there is a golden dot of paint or pigment on her arm shoulder. that will just have to stay. the blood splatters also remind me of pepperonis.

Rather than doing anything to darken the lenses, I would suggest brightening them instead. Doing most of the lens in a brighter green and just a touch of white slightly off center would sell the effect.
Also, you might want to add some shadow to the "cheeks" on the helmet so that detail doesn't get lost.

Seems like there's quite the controversy this month! Never thought I'd see Les Mis rewritten about an online painting competition, but that's a thing now, I guess! (and bravo too! I think I'd have stopped at one verse, but nope, the Eldar Protest Crowd mean business!)
In all seriousness, I do wonder if this means it's time to retire the annual Marine round? When I started this thing, I had no idea what interest there would be in it and I wanted the first round to be accessible to as many people as possible (not sure if this is still the case, but back then GW gave out push-fit Marine demo minis in stores for free), but at this point the whole Painting Challenge community is that much bigger and the entries more diverse each month, so for nexr year we might kick off with something different.
The hobby has seen an explosion off cool non-Warhammer stuff in recent years that just wasn't there when this started (or at least, not so easy to get hold of), and Marines are a little less ubiquitous too, so I think we'll call this one last hurrah and between now and next March, I'm sure we'll come up with something else to start the rotation off with!

Obviously as a marine player, I’m a little biased, but I also like the fact that we start the cycle off with something known that I’ll never have to fish around for an entry for.
If people want to protest, I think that’s their right. Part of how I choose votes is how well entries stick the the theme. People who stray too far just won’t be in the running for my votes, regardless of how well painted. There has always been people stretching theme, I’ve pushed the bounds a few times myself. But if you go too far, there can be consequences at the end.
But as long as people are participating and having fun, I’m not going to tell anyone “no”

Para,
No, we are just having a little fun (those of us who cannot find any more Marine bits to destroy, or have failed to think of a funny way to tie our selection to the theme). It is a fair bit of work for you thinking up new topics each month. Besides, if you ended the March is Marine Month...well, how could we sing our catchy song about our revolution (or have someone paint a banner to carry forward)?

Appreciate the feedback folks, and likewise I get that the 'protest' is all in good fun!
Obviously it's a long time until this will come up again, so I guess next February (assuming I remember) I'll bring it up again and let the community decide. Perhaps there'll be something we can come up with that keep at least some of the tradition alive but broadens it in such a way that people don't feel the need to stretch the theme further each year. I can see maybe putting Space Marines as a theme on the usual poll for instance, or expanding the title a bit to encompass something that means everyone who wants to paint Marines can, without excluding anyone else. From the beginning, the themes have always been aimed at inspiring and guiding creativity rather than discouraging people from entering, so we'll have to see where the community stands on this round next time it comes around!

As mentioned before, Tradition must go on! For honor! And for the Emperor!
Perhaps giving out heresy points for any show of brazen unruliness by misguided youngsters will set stray-sheep to the right path.
Accumulation of said points will eventually result in an extra challenge for the next round that will consist of or color palette restriction or increased minimum number of models entered.

Despite having piles and piles of them, I don't enjoy painting Space Marines. That said, "space marines" (note the lack of capitalization) is a broad enough category that I can find something in my vast backlog to fit the theme.
Also, these are probably the best photos I can take, so I'm calling the Martians done:

I actually really like this idea. I think it's funny to have the xenos entries on the space marine thread. It's not like we're handing out cash prizes here. It's about supporting each other and having a fun community. I say keep the marine month, but understand you'll get some protest entries. Why not make it April?
