Yep. And not the direction they decided to go with cultists. They opted for the 'of the abyss' look instead from the expansion pack.
With 4 cultists kits coming with the codex and chaos marines already getting a KT upgrade, its very, very, very unlikely to involve chaos cultists (or marines).

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Traitor guard were also on the entirely correct kit that had the two mutants on it. I was expecting them to hold them back for the main release, but
Kill team does seem like a possibility with that picture.

I'd assumed the silhouette was from War Cry, but look at those cuffs I could easily see Traitor Guard. Or in a proper shocking twist - it's the new Cadian kit, which makes both traitors and veterans!

Much like Brood Brothers, Traitor Guard models will be an upgrade kit to basic Guard infantry.

And the reason we’re yet to see them shown/teased, is an updated Guard squad is coming first!

Squat kill team on Friday.

Seriously, what other way would they intoduce the base troopers to make maximum profit?

Possibly. But do keep in mind they’ve confirmed it’s a full release, and not a Boxed Game flash of the ankle.

Which makes it more likely. It shifts some of the burden of releasing kits away from the codex release month. Also eases the production (of all all-new kits) if the basic squad comes out a couple months before.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I would suspect that to be the case. If they are going to be updating the guard kits, it would make sense to also add upgrades for GSC and then perhaps traitor guard. If they update the cadian range, then the GSC kit becomes redundant.

The GSC kit is just heads and pouches. As long as the new models have the same hollow for a neck, they'd be fine.

Worth mentioning that the scuttlebutt is that the Cadian upgrade frame(which isn't sold separately) was intended to function with the "new" style of Cadian.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD.

Ahem.

Those previewed axes look really similar to freely available 3d printing ones, I think I would've liked something more like the Corpse Grinder added in to break it up a bit. I just hope and pray to the Skull Throne that whoever sculpted the Goliath Stimmer's magnificent meat slabs he calls arms does the Berzerkers if they sport bare arms. My favourite GW muscle arms.

If they're wrong in the app and site, that'll be the only place you get them, so that makes them right.

My guess would be no. Standard IG have Aquillas everywhere, the helmet, the breast, the gun, the @#$%ing canteens. A Chaos sprue would have to replace all of that, and at that point just make another figure.

Plus the real bonus of the Traitor Guard figures was the whole layered look of furs, chain mail, iron and modern armor, which you can't do with an add on sprue.

Of course GW still sells Chaos Rhinos and Land Raiders with Aquillas on the treads, so what do I know.

Potentially interesting background thought pops into my idiot mind.

For CSM who come from The Great Crusade era, having hordes of mere mortals makes solid narrative sense, in a way it doesn’t for Loyalist Maureens.

The Great Crusade was absolutely a Team Effort. Yes the Legionnes Astartes were absolutely The Final Sanction, they were still supported by human warriors unnumbered.

The same with Knightly Houses, Titan Legions etc. Until the post Heresy reformation, it was always a combined arms approach, made up from whatever forces happens to be available in your sub-fleet.

One could argue that very tactical/strategic flexibility is Chaos’ greatest asset, as The Imperium can never truly know what a given force is comprised of.

It could just be a bunch of really enthusiastic but easily put down mortal Cultists. It could be a serious and organised push ala a Black Crusade, and everything in between.

And so a large part of The Imperium’s challenge is needing to maintain sufficient standing, garrisoned forces to at the very least hold out. Which despite its vast, mind boggling resources, prevents The Imperium from putting together its favoured hammer blow forces proactively.

I can probably explain better once Mr Brain has caught up.

Preparing the Invasion of Terra

Makes sense. When a group of CSM attacks a planet, at best they expect the Guard or Mechanicus with the possibility of Sororitas. When the Imperium attacks a Chaos-held world? It's anybody's bet as to what is down there. Cultists, Astartes, Daemons, Xenos, any combination of the lot. You could throw a Regiment of Guard in and they get slaughtered by a Warband of Astartes or they could crush a Cult only a few thousand strong who took over by luck and sheer determination.

The mutants are a bit much for me, yet I know I will end up getting some for my wordbearers.

The expanded rules for cultist is just what I have been hoping for. Im very happy to be able to "count as" the BSF psychers and even that fallen commisar (I got despite wild protests from my wallet) as a cultist command sqd.

And I dont expect any of the cultist rabble to be competetive, so I wont be dissapointed either

The full silhouette on the warcom page.

The presence of Traitor Guard makes me even more confused as to how Chaos Bikers weren't shown or teased. Could just be part of a later release, but dang, that was the one thing I was hoping for.

Otherwise, those earlier rumors have been spot on. Guessing we'll see Traitor Guard vs Squats for Kill Team on Friday.

As well as some Sylvaneth archers tomorrow.

This. Absolutely this.

Cultists are arguably the most dangerous though, because they’re the least quantifiable.

I’ll refer to myself here as an example. Despite my dark, satanic exterior, I’m really about as hard as mashed potato. Despite my Nerf collection, I’ve bugger all competency with actual firearms. And I’ve sod all discipline. Multiply me for your army by, I dunno, 200,000 times, and it’d look impressive (I’m 6’2”), but any actually trained military force, even by the basic standards of most Guardsmen will go through us like a dodgy vindaloo with a 12 pint chaser.

But there’s no way for The Imperium to properly gauge that until they’ve got boots on the ground. Because there’s always a chance my 200,000 Wuss Clones have had a mindwrite from a Rambo template donor.

Look this is making sense to me!

Just caught up with the chaos reveals and I can't shake the feeling that some of them should rightfully belong into AoS. The dark commune is particularly egregious. If that one guy wasn't holding a pistol I wouldn't have guessed this was a 40k product.

Base cultists are fine, but the mutated variations are approaching a Death Guard level of silliness with all those goofy devil faces. I love the general idea of leaning more into the body horror aspect, something they really nailed with Admech, but the execution is just not there.

The possessed are the one outlier and they also appear to be massive, so I'm looking forward to those, hoping there is at least some modularity to the kit. The demon prince is a really nice base model, again marred by not one, but an entire selection of silly heads. The rest of the sculpt looks convincing though, so I'll probably get one and print an appropriate head myself.

Gotta save some new stuff to show off on Mondays. I'm sure we'll see them later this month as they start to build hype for the codex release in June.

I actually think the base cultists look like AoS models with guns too.
There's a surprising lack of robes and gasmasks, they don't look like what you'd expect to see in 40k.

The new cultists look like simpler versions of the War Cry models with guns.

I think the accursed and the torments are fine, but the paint job doesn't suit them. Too clean.

I like the idea of the next KT box being Traitor Guard v Karskin.
