Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 89 July 2022: We Are Legion
Been working on a new "legion" all month since what I intended to enter isn't sparking any joy.
I've taken proof photos as I go along, but I think I'll keep everything secret until the reveal (ie, the finished models and the proof photos in one post).

My gobos are coming on slowly but being away on holiday for 3 days isn’t helping. Just eyes and toenails to do anyway and to be honest I’m not even attempting anything more than table top quality for them. The challenge here was just to paint them at all.
I kept the darks, er, darker than on the first set of five, but I don't think i've quite nailed the reflections.
I forced myself to go up to pure white for the highlights, and it kind of works. I think I need to do some more research and trials to really master Shiny. I'm pleased with the green glowy effects, though.
I have three drones assembled and primed. I hope to have them done in a day or two.
Gotta say, your paint jobs have really been working for me recently. I'm particularly loving the placements of the highlights. That's something I'm still struggling with myself: where to place highlights on a slightly shiny/glossy surface. Of course, the green glow looks amazing, too.

Thanks. Much like every hobbyist, all I can see is the flaws, so it's great to get some feedback.
Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

I know the feeling.
Looking forward to what it will be.

I'm not terribly comfortable critiquing other people's stuff, but since you asked, I like how the lighter highlights of the second batch give the top of the models and therefore the models as a whole a greater presence compared to the first batch. I don't know why you feel like you had to force yourself to go that light. It seems pretty natural to me. But of course tastes differ.

Crap, the month is almost gone. I need to get moving. Had big plans, but nothing finished yet. Just put a black wash down this morning. 3 out of 5 marines just past the basecoat stage, and 2 gaunts ready for details. Far short of where I wanted to be at this point.
I have a whole legion of stuff in the works, not sure where I'll get by the end of the month.
One dreadnought mostly built. I can't find any of my magnets to magnet the weapon arm options, so it's on standstill.
10 assault marines and a Lt built, not based yet.
20 Beaky Bois built, based, and primed
10 Terminators with basic base coating done. Need all the detail paint. 5 with guns and fists, 5 with Lighting Claws.
6 Vanguard Marines almost completely finished. They need a few minor details: Some final basing, paint a couple skulls, but in some grass tufts, etc., paint their squadron designations on the shoulder, put in some muzzle effect on the flamer barrel. I should be able to get these over the line at least.
48 models this month would be legion-dary, but 6 seems less so.
Slowly making progress on the Vindictors... just the metals, shields and bases to do, then add all the chips and grime, and they'll be done. Hopefully before the month ends!
cheers,
Michael

I had a cool idea for this month's theme, but then I couldn't find the miniature I needed for it, so I'm going to enter this guy and hope I can get him done before the month is out.
Welp its been a long month but finally got some paint time in, some work in progress pics of the Kasrkin, one prewash, the other post wash. Still a ways to go - some drybrushing, highlights and basing of course, but minus the final varnish stage they should be done on time.
Scratch that, looks like the post wash image got lost in the uploading ether, if I remember I'll check my gallery after work and see if it has shown up.
Overall I'm happy with how they are turning out though, so yay to that.
Edit:
Finally got the post wash picture uploaded, so here it is. Still work in progress and all mind.

Too early for poll suggestions for next month? I'm still working my way through the ork kommandos box, so anything pertaining to subterfuge gets my vote.

For some reason 'Survivors' popped into my head about a week ago as a theme - not necessarily the most badass or legendary, but the stubborn sods who will, guaranteed, still be plugging away on the final turn when the rest of your army's been sent to meet its deity of choice.

In less than the time it took me to finish these two, I banged out a Kislev hero for my friend's Warhammer RPG group.
I swear, I must have picked something I'm the least motivated to paint in this round.
I'm half tempted to say, "Screw it, here's another assortment of models I want to paint instead of these models I feel I have to paint."
Okay, so I officially went "Screw it, here's another assortment of models I want to paint instead of these models I feel I have to paint." So what have I been working on? Unsurprisingly, I've been converting & painting models of all the characters of the Warhammer RPG Discord I'm on.
How is this We Are Legion? Well, we tend to have a West March rotating player roster since scheduling is difficult. However, if all our players were able to make it to one game at the same time, we'd have a whole freaking regiment:
I've been taking photos as I've been going along all month and I just need to finish two of these models to complete this current "Legion". However, we've been gaining players faster than I can find/convert the models!

I decided to go for a unit of Milita/Astra Militarum/PDF that would be linked to my custom SM chapter (The Knights Sanguine), they are based on a medieval/feudal world that have been given what guns that could be spared from the chapters stores or built with what was available. so a bit of a rag tag bunch with a mix of medieval infantry armour and some basic guns.
Proof
They have all got some paint on now but not quite finished yet.
Here's my finished Imperial Snowtrooper for I Am Legion. It is conceivable but entirely unlikely that July didn't work out well for me. However any such suggestion would be a lie, slander and propaganda. I always meant to paint this and only this model.
So yeah, as I said earlier in the month, progress is progress. At least I managed to pin down the color scheme on one of the troopers so I can get the others done down the line. Sadly the rest of the squad didn't make it past the basecoat stage.

Big thanks to everyone taking part in these challenges driving us on to complete units (or parts of units) that we would otherwise neglect. If not for all of yous these venerable plastics would likely have remained in primer indefinitely.
To anyone glancing worriedly at the calendar and back to their unfinished minis, Crack on! These goblins aren’t good, but they’re painted! You can do it! You can do better! Best my mediocrity in votes I dare you!

A snowtrooper, but not on a snow base? That's unusual; dare I say...rebellious?

Hehe. the rebellious thing is that in my Star Wars many planets aren't mono-biome affairs. Take for instance the never before heard of world Baelyin Three. It's a fertile world and the bulk of its exports is comprised of agrarian goods, but its capital is built in the frosty sub-polar region around fuel and mineral refineries that provide most of the planet's wealth. Night patrol is no joke without adequate protection, and the troopers stationed there certainly see their share of snow and are equipped accordingly. Yet manpower is limited and if an uprising were to threaten the farmlands, it may be necessary to pull troops out of the capital as quickly as possible with no time to refit them for a different environment.
There's also the more boring explanation from my Legion collection thread.
Geifer wrote: I gave basing on my Snowtroopers a good bit of thought and considered snow bases for a better fitting theme, but the squad seems to be very limited in how you can convert it. The other PVC models I've worked with so far are at least good for making three squads of troopers with some individuality on each model and not too much conversion required to get it, but I'm not sure I'd be able to do the same with Snowtroopers. And if I'm going to have only one squad and an E-Web down the line, there's no point in giving them different basing as I couldn't make a full army out of them.
On the bright side, I don't care for the look of armies that don't share basing, so at least I won't feel bad about mixing these guys in with the rest of my Imperials.
