When did the Black Mane Wolf become the chapter symbol for the SW? I thought that symbol was for Rangar’s great company and Russ’s the Wolf That Stalks Between The Stars, the one that looks like a wolf rampant, was the chapter symbol.

They've pretty much used Ragnar's symbol as the default one for the space wolves for 20 years. it annoys me too, but as per the lore, almost no one actually wears the chapter symbol.

Even Logan's own great company uses his personal heraldry of the moon howling wolf head.

It's an unusual instance where there is no symbol that appears on the majority of the space wolf chapter, as each great company basically acts like its own chapter that occasionally hangs out on the same planet as the others.

I know it’s minor but it feels like someone using either the Deathwing or Ravenwing symbols for all of the Dark Angels.
Logan, Arjar, and Bjorn are the only ones that have the chapter symbol. I think Njal and Ulrik would have that symbol as well if their shoulder pads weren’t covered.
I thought Logan kind of had two jobs like Tu'Shan of the Salamanders, leader of both the chapter and one of the companies. That’s why he has the chapter’s symbol but still leads the Champions of Fenris great company that has the Night Runner icon.
Hopefully we’ll get a better writer for the next codex that can explain this and why scouts went from veterans for the first half dozen editions to neophytes in the last two.

Yeah, the great wolf's company members technically use that heraldry - so all the priests and dreadnoughts, but none of the normal troops are part of that company.

It would be cool if they had a space wolf sheet that had all 12 great company symbols on it.

That would be amazing. Wonder if the Blood Ravens Gabriel Angelos will get a decent legends update.

To be fair though, it is very likely that Kabalites & Wyches have become minimum unit size 10 instead of 5. So the Venom needed this rule to even function as a Transport for those units.

If Combat Squads is still part of Marine Rules, it will be in their 1 page of Army rules with Oath of Moment and Combat Doctrines. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it was an exclusive rule given by Razorbacks and Impulsors

Combat squads was a rule from back when we had to buy squads at full 10 men. Do we need it anymore?

I say this as someone who routinely fields full 10 man squads. In my years of playing, I can only think of a handful of times I’ve used it. Mostly if I want 2x5 man squads, I just take them in the list. The ability to break up on the fly was nice, useful, but very situational. If I was tasked at looking at the rules and asking what’s important, what needs to stay, and what can be cut, I’d probably trim this one.

Can you still play your army the way it was? Yes. (with a little less flexibility)
Does it invalidate collections? Probably not. People might need to paint more sarges, but if they don’t have stats differentiating them, maybe not.
Lore problems? If you want to field the 10 brothers of a squad in 2 parts you still can. You just need to make the decision in listbuilding, not at deployment.

I’ve got no problem with the rule. It’s fluffy and helps a low model count army that’s supposed to be flexible. But if it needs to die on the alter of simplifying the game, I’ll not cry over it.

I only take squads of 5 models, cuz you get one sergeant extra for free for every 10 models and you can still take the same number of special/heavy weapons (just need to divide them to both 5 man squads). Will have to see how big of a deal battleshock turns out to be in 10th, perhaps there will be situations where units of 10 actually make sense..

I haven't seen Combat Squads mentioned officially anywhere. That said, like others, the only time I've actually seen CS used in over a decade has been in Deathwatch to give ObSec to things that wouldn't normally get it or abuse the mixed unit rules to make bikes Infantry. Ravenwing maybe used it a bit too?

I'm not sure losing it would really be that big a deal at this point.

Same, and even then main reason for using it was because squad leaders cost extra points people were not willing to pay.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Space Marine Squads have been 5-10 models since forever. Heavy weapons, however, were locked to the max 10-strong unit and the point of Combat Squads was to represent real-life fire teams and fire-and-maneuver squad tactics: half the SM squad advances with special weapons and melee sarge, the other half supports them with the heavy weapon. But that's largely redundant for Primaris squad loadouts so it is getting the cut.

That would because GW doesn't care about something unless it sells them more models. Primaris is the new deal, scouts are out, Hounds of Morkai (incidentally using one of their least selling new kits) are in. No matter how much SW players didn't want them.

Personally I think they are trying to kill off the SW fan base. See their new rules. Hot F#@$@#ing garbage. They took the part of 9th Edition SW rules everyone promptly forgot about and made that their main rules. If everything goes well, you can be a tiny bit better than BA start by turn four.

Another new Valrak video about new stuff:

Norn Emissary will be a dual kit with a Norn Assimilator
Terminator Ancient

Also a bit about Epic:
Name will be Warhammer Horus Heresy Legion Imperialis
Different rules than Epic and I think he means more changes than just a new edition
Box with Space Marines vs Imperial Army? theme, which sounds strange but is from a trusted source?
No specific release date just probably end of summer

New source about Amazon stuff:
Henry Cavill wants to do a Eisenhorn series, first season follows the first book.
He won't be an actor in this show but will probably be some bigger role in the future?
The Man in the High Castle writers are working on this show as well.
Timescale for release is 11th edition launch

Juicy!

Thanks for doing the recap, i'll put it in the OP right away.

Epic stuff sounds believably weird; the Amazon stuff might well be someone trolling him, i'll check some things later in the week when i'll have more time.

Common practice in the game industry? Especially if you don't have the ability to do "live"-service.

10th was probably already in the planning stages and being actively worked on since atleast the halfway mark of 9th. NVM that new units etc often are even longer in the pipeline?

Not sure I buy the Marine vs IA for Epic. Especially if the game's supposed to be named Legio (n?) Imperialis.

I can, on the other hand, buy the idea that Cavill doesn't want to star in his first project when he's also the producer. He seems to a) care about the material and want to see it done well (especially after the Witcher fiasco), and b) realize that being the next potential Faige is worth more than being next in line for a spot on the Expandables in ten years time.

Wow, what a coincidence that Cavill comes in as executive producer and suddenly wants to do the same show GW has been trying to get off the ground for nearly a decade!

Shows take a lot of time and resources to make. If GW keeps the 3 years per edition, I actually doubt it will be ready for 11th.

Maybe the ramifications from the next Bequin novel play a major role in 11th edition and the show is a perfect tie in?

Great way to recap fans on who Eisenhorn is and draw in new people. Though showing the endgame for Eisenhorn in the lore, while at the same time releasing his introductory show would feel poorly planned

Idk, being able to say "the story that we are making is finished" has a lot of appeal after certain shows have burned us in the past.

I have no doubt that the models which will be in the 11e launch box are either being designed now, or are already complete. The design & production process takes several years. There's been multiple occasions that we've seen leaks of fully painted models over a year before their release.

Of course at this point many 11th edition details will be subject to change and GW won't know precisely what will be in the box, nor will they start on any rules writing for a while yet.

Also, the show will not, under any circumstances, be aimed at Black Library readers. It's a play for a mass audience.

~2.5 years is probably a better goal than 3. They're going to be hoping that the IP is percolating through virgin brains when the edition hype begins, so maybe timing the finale with the 11th launch. Although it's easier to delay an edition by 6 months than speed up TV production by 6 months. Either way, that's probably the sequence they want to hit.
