Subject: The Flash - Official Trailer #2 (25 April 2023}
From the social media reaction, it seems like pretty positive reviews coming from named film critics rather than bloggers you'd never heard of before.
I'm not here to defend a movie that I haven't seen, and I'm not going to spend my time sharing the SM posts. But they're out there, and this definitely feels different. People can take them for whatever they want.
I think it's pretty telling though that they're doing screenings and allowing social media reactions this early. I think I saw the review embargo will lift early as well.

It's definitely a positive that they are allowing people to say stuff and doing screenings this early. Speaks to the movie at least being entertaining.
That being said, the trailers continue to reinforce the basic problem here. It's our first flash movie and it's really a Batman Movie that flash is the inciting incident for. Chuck in a supergirl for good measure (and hey, she looks like a great version of supergirl).
DC seems to think the only Flash story worth telling is Flashpoint so they just do it over and over again in every possible medium. Great.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I hope it’s really good, but I can’t shake this image in my head of film critics as the airline critic in Stewardess School who gave them a glowing review.

No need to be defensive we're just remembering other DC films getting positive PR before release that ended up being very divisive. Being from more general audiences certainly helps but it still feels like we've been here before. Still, I'm a simple man I see Michael Keaton I buy a ticket.
I guess there are other surprises in the film and someone jokingly proffered a cameo of Christopher Reeve's Superman done similarly to Peter Cushing's Tarkin in Rogue One and the disgust in the comments was quite visceral.

I just can't warm to Ezra Miller in anything I've seen him in. Has that sort of uncanny-valley not quite human but close enough to feel uncomfortable look about him, and looks dead behind the eyes to me. As if he'd snap your finger backwards just because he wondered what noise you'd make.
I didn't care for Ezra in Justice League all that much, and I don't recall any other roles that I might have seen him in.
Either way, it's not something you're going to have to worry about much longer: Ezra's out after this movie. They won't recast him unless there's an Act of God in his favour.

Other than appearing as the Flash, i know he's in the Harry Potter Magical Beasts movies. But for the life of me I can't actually picture his character.....

Depp, Ezra… Im surprised Jonathan Majors wasn’t in that series.

Ezra will always have a spot in my head (begrudgingly) because of his portrayal of Kevin in "We Need to Talk About Kevin". Its mainly a Tilda Swinton movie (on of her best in my opinion) but the movie revolves around her relationship with the eponymous Kevin. Everything that you describe about Ezra made him perfect for the role, coincidentally.
Spoiler:
Ezra portrays a psychopathic school shooter. Only his mom, played by Tilda can see/knows that something is way off right from birth, but her husband played by John C. Reilly constantly downplays Kevin's behavior through babyhood until adolescence. His behavior goes unaddressed until the slow burn finally ignites at the end of the movie.
Dark, sad and brutal movie. I think of the movie often when I see some of the school happenings here in the States.

This is a major spoiler, do you really want to ruin the film before you see it?
Spoiler:
Seriously, last chance to turn back! I'm not responsible for what happens next!
Spoiler:
Okay, you asked for it...
Michael Keaton isn’t the only blast from DC’s past in Warner Bros.’ upcoming superhero tentpole “The Flash.” During an interview with Esquire Middle East, “The Flash” director Andy Muschietti revealed that none other than Nicolas Cage is making a cameo in the movie as Superman. It’s a shocking and full circle moment for comic book movie fans and Cage, who was cast in Tim Burton’s failed “Superman Lives” 25 years ago.
Happy now?

I was honestly surprised when this cameo wasn't a part of the Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths event a few years ago. It does not surprise me at all that it pops up here.
It's been rumored for a little while. A while back, that actor gave a response to a question about themself and the role that had people thinking it was going to happen.

Saw it. Fun movie. Not the usual DC dark gritty edge, more in tone with Aquaman, WAY less dark than the animated Flashpoint. It is very much a Flash movie, not a Batman movie, to answer someone’s earlier concern. Also the cgi is bad. Like disturbingly bad. It was supposedly an intentional choice to make it look bad? I dunno. You kind of get used to it. But yeah, a good light hearted movie that kept me plenty entertained thruout.
Apparently, according to the director, the movie looks that way because we're seeing everything from the POV of the Flash.
Which is absolutely hilarious because it has worse effects than Windows Movie Maker.
1) The director isn't referring to the same shots that people are complaining about.
2) Although DC Studios though they had a potentially big hit on their hands...there was also a limit to how much cash they were willing to dump into a movie that does nothing for their new universe to come. Both things can be true.
Edit: I think the situation I outlined in #2 is kinda insane. Feels like the priorities are reversed. But there's been...so much...insane stuff happening at that studio since Man of Steel that here we are.

The director is talking about the same scenes most people are complaining about. It is very much when Barry is in the Speed Force that the cgi is the worst. Again though, I did still enjoy the movie.
Watched it last night. I seriously can't believe I'm saying this because I've loathed so much of the DCEU, but I actually liked it. In fairness I think a big part of it is Keaton - seeing him in the suit, hearing the classic theme from '89, and seeing how they replicated his bat cave was a real treat that took me right back to the Batman obsessed little kid I once was.
I wish Ezra wasn't a child groomer because he was actually good in this. I also really dug the new Supergirl, I would not object if they brought her back. Michael Shannon needed more to do, but he was in it about as much as I expected he would be. I was expecting this film to be more of an ensemble picture, but this is definitely a Flash movie first and foremost.
All of the complaints about the CGI are completely warranted. It looks pretty bad all throughout, especially when he's using the speed force.
I don't think I'd recommend this to anyone that wasn't really into superhero movies, but if you like the genre this one might be worth checking out. I'd give it a hard 7.
It was fine. A lot will probably depend on your level of multiverse fatigue. If you're mainly interested in seeing Keaton as Batman again you should be happy with it as he isn't just a cameo and delivers a strong performance.
Spoiler:
Instead of directly having Reverse Flash the yellow on youger Barry seems to be foreshadowing he'll be the evil speedster. Yellow is also the main color worn when Flash has to remove the can of tomatoes to make sure that his mother is killed. Barry is his own Reverse Flash in this iteration it seems.
I avoided spoilers but knew there were some cameos and I thought they were probably going to be the Flash from either, or both, of the TV shows (90's and recent).
I didn't care for the new Batman armor they went for with Affleck. The suits from BvS and JL looked a lot better and not as cheap. He was fine I just thought the suit didn't look very good.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
Saw this yesterday.
Overall i thought it was a good movie.
And thats inspite of the 3 things I liked least in it:
●The lead actor.
I've never thought they were a decent casting choice for Barry Allen/Flash.
Not in BvS, not in JL, & not now.
And then they went off the rails irl....
Hopefully Gunn hands them their pink slip.
● About 1/2 the CGI.
●The Flashs suit. It's a bit better than in JL, but.... well, the CW managed to do it better on a TV show budget for 10 years.....
Overall I'll rank it as a tie for the 3rd best DCeu movie.
1st = Sucide Squad (Gunns movie)
2nd = Aquaman
3rd = Wonder Woman/Flash
The crap CGI gave me a headache, so I gave up watching it before the end. I did see that we're back onto using dead actors in new movies again. Glad I didn't waste any money on it.
So... Watched it yesterday with my wife... and really enjoyed it.
Some CGI was wonky (as in the Scorpion King in Return of the Mummy) but the humour and story worked for us.
Ezra Miller was good at playing two different Barry Allen's... and Micheal Keaton alone was worth the ticket.
Ranking super heroes I watched this year it was better than Ant-Man 3... But looses to Spider verse 2 (mainly due to the visuals... Story is comparable).
Being a SUPER Flash fan that I am (I prefer Wally West, though) when I saw the full trailer I knew
Spoiler:
since "other" barry was wearing a yellow hoodie he was going to be Reverse Flash
When I saw the movie, I was semi-disappointed I was right and that movie writers are so predictable.. and a bit glad I was able to reason it out.
Main problem is trying to divorce Ezra Miller's off-screen actions with his performance. I had heard this was going to be out Nov. 2022, but his wackiness pushed it back.
In any comic media and ESPECIALLY movies you run into the problem of disorienting your fans and/or the average movie goer. For example, the MCU didn't do (insert story arc here) 100% faithful, but they made sure the average person could watch their films and not have to keep track of the plot threads that had happened over years in comic form. DC seemed to be going the opposite route for a while- example is Robin burned and defaced uniform in Dawn of Justice. Fans know what that was, and it was DC saying "We're not spoon feeding you, go pick up a comic!"
I didn't think it was DC being stuck on Flashpoint (as the animated movie was brilliant- RIP Kevin Conroy), as them keeping the whole multiple worlds thing connected to the Flash. As Gardner Fox said in the opening to Crisis on Infinite Earths, it was all about the Flash meeting Jay Garrick. That opened the door for multiple worlds meeting and interacting, as well as saying that the later Elseworlds were canon for their own plane of existence. So whenever there is any kind of multiple worlds crisis, the Flash(es) have to show up in a major plot point- wether it's destroying Anti-monitor's array, throwing Superboy Prime into the speed force, or punching Darksied at just the right time.
Some of the background things I noticed and loved:
Spoiler:
Barry lives across from Whizz Comic shop, which is where Captain Marvel/ Shazam first appeared- both guys who wear red and have a thunderbolt on their chests.
The corner barber shop is called Grayson's.
Barry is using the ring, which he always does in the comics- even after Wally discovered you could literally cloak yourself in speed force magic to make a costume.
The first time Barry runs faster than light, he stretches out- which is what physicists have theorized would happen if you go FTL= your mass would become huge thanks to E=mc2.
They really helped make a good character of Nora Allen, who is not seen that much even in the comics, and the whole Italian vibe helped explain why Barry is a brunette and not blonde like in the comics.
"Cold is the Emperor's way of telling us to burn more heretics."
I had heard this was going to be out Nov. 2022, but his wackiness pushed it back.
'Wackiness' is putting it a bit mildly for incidents of domestic violence, some including minors, stalking, multiple arrests related to incidents of violence and harassment...
That gak right there has clear patterns of abuse, violence and manipulation, and it should absolutely not be played down as 'whacky antics' or whatever - victims of that sort of thing, and especially minors or dependants, have enough trouble already and are often not taken seriously enough, the last thing they need is being dismissed with this 'boys will be boys, what can you do' BS. From what is publicly known already, Miller has issues and should probably seek professional help immediately, no matter their artistic merit or whatever. Hollywood is absolutely not the place and system that cares or even acknowledges people's problems other than in sensationalist and intrusive ways, and situations like the one around Miller can easily escalate to absolute tragedy in very short time.
