I wouldn't buy it because of the Nurgle-heavy narrative, and hope this is just a one-off and moving swiftly onto a completely different adventure. Yuck.

The look of the game is "Quest-Underworlds", which I think is good because sometimes less is more. It looks very tidy compared to previous Quests.

One slight detail; not only did Cursed City get discontinued but also Blackstone Fortress. A similar product for 40K would be very welcome...

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

So, maybe I'm not up to speed on the lore, but what kind of character is Drasher Vorn?

Is that a college of magic or druid or what?

So it is a skirmish. Quite disappointed as Warhammer Quest usually means dungeon crawling. I won't buy it just for the miniatures, I need a good game not a box of little soldiers with negligible paper.

Agreed, I'd say they look better than the mainline Maggotkin they revealed alongside.

Not a fan of the map book concept, seems too limiting to me, I like my mazes big.

Great to hear the campaign was designed to be actually finished tho and not a pointless endless grind like Cursed City.

He's the chieftain of a feral tribe lives outside of the Cities of Sigmar in Ghyran. The waters from the abbey are poisoning his tribe so he's joined the companions.
He has a magic mace that lets him turn into a wild bestial form, but it seems to becoming permanent.

I’ll get the box just for the nurgle minis. Awesome stuff. Don’t know if I’ll bother with the actual game, though.

It is AOS, so there's a strong element of "we just made this up!", but he's clearly a continuation of the idea behind Amber wizards. He's wearing the Amber magic symbol on his chest to make it obvious. But Amber magic, aka Ghur, "the lore of beasts" makes its wizards very savage looking, maybe somewhat animalistic looking, so he seems to be the natural extension of that to where living around too much Ghur can turn you into an animal shapeshifter.

Pretty sure there’s king been Amber Magic spells to Embiggen and Enfiercen the caster?

This chap however seems to be mutated and stuck in that form.

Which I kinda like the concept of. Long term practitioners of a specific colour of magic on a societal level suffering Not Necessarily Chaotic or Deletrious Mutations.

A number of Amber wizards in Warhammer could shapeshift or use spells to do so - it was kind of their thing

Hence why I would have like this chap to be more over the top and beastly. As is, he looks like an attempt to make a werewolf (with a bit of makeup,a wig and plastic fangs) in a low budget B movie

This box is pretty much a sure hit with so many amazing minis, I just hope they don't fall into the same issues they had with Cursed city initial release. Come on GW make this one right with a generous amount of boxes.

DO check eBay or equivalent the morning of Darkwater's release (I secured a copy of Cursed City for 15% off three hours before it went live on GW's website from a reputable seller), but I fully expect them to produce enough copies this time around. For one thing, it's supposed to be an on-going product that's sold for years, it was silly they only made enough Cursed Citys to last for three days before it couldn't be had for love nor money (well, probably a lot of money could do it). And also I think they're really leaning on this to help get people in on AOS, some totally new players yes, but also the numerous lapsed AOS fans who let 4th edition land with a thud, and that means having enough copies for them to buy it while the hype is high.

As much as I loved Gloomhaven, set up and tear down of all these separate corridors and rooms (just sorting finding the correct ones in the pile!) sometimes was taking more time than the scenario itself.

Having recently played Tidal Blades2 that use the map books, it is an incredible quality of life improvement inthat respect and for me absolutely the way to go with such games. That, or big tiles that you don't need more than 4 of for a given scenario like in Machina Arcana or Massive Darkness 2.

Really??

Never played Gloomhaven, but did play more than my share of WHQ, and the few seconds it takes to add another tile to the dungeon was never an issue for me or anybody i knows

I think its just a different tactic and GW seeing how it goes when it comes to the book.

It does encourage very fast setup and play, which is important for many people on limited time. It also means that there's potentially a higher chance of the game being played and not just bought for unique models to be pushed into various armies.

It might also be that its easier for GW to source and produce than lots of tileparts so that might be a contributing factor in their choice.

Cursed City was indeed "cursed" but it was also released around the Pandemic when everything was just a bit bonkers (as opposed to now where for most places its mostly sane just stupidly expensive now). So there's a chance that GW are not just prepared better in terms of launch volume, but also resupply after.

Also for Nurgle fans I'd say keep an eye on ebay too - split-boxes will be a thing and the very early days its a great way to get some decently priced alternative sculpted models for your Nurgle army.
Even though many might vanish; there's a good chunk that will clearly "count as" regular models in an army; plus a good few will be easy counts-as.
Eg for Cursed City whilst most of the named heroes in the box no longer have stats (or won't in a while); they can easily count as vampire lords or necromancers. Just plonk them on the right sized base and they are good to use for years.

Heck I'll be looking to see if anyone splits boxes up and sells those kelpie models on their own (likely on a sprue with the other small critter things) cause they'd be awesome ghostly things for my soulblight

I think this is a good point. While I love sprawling dungeons, this approach is far more practical, and may broaden the appeal of the set. It's actually a very attractive package. My only reservation is the miniatures. I think the adventurers are actually rather ugly - I don't like any of them much. The many of the monsters are a very specific aesthetic; if you like bloated dudes with tentacle arms, then their great (and some of them are indeed very cool), but if you don't then you won't buy it. Perhaps it would have been better to stick with more conventional looking bad guys.

That would mean every set would be Slaves to Darkness

The last one was Vampires, this one is Chaos in the form of Soullbight. Who knows next one could be Gloomspite or Orruks for some classic enemies.

I really, really want a warhammer quest where all the heroes are (small c) chaos archetypes - and that they are working together to raid (supposedly) abandoned Seraphon temple city full of now feral Lizardmen - or maybe even a Slann gone rogue (full metla jacket style).

It'd be so cool.

Yes. GW miniatures may be top quality, but just like with their rules, their UX/UI designs are between one to two decades behind the competition.

I really don't like the book. I tend to buy these games for the minis and everything else is surplus, likely to sit around taking up space. To expensive to throw away, not useful enough to taken out of the boxes and found use for (much like the mountains of Kill team tokens and cards that I've amassed over the years).

At least with the tiles, I like using them for making up dungeons for AoS Skirmish games or adding as special areas for custom AoS campaigns. They get some use. They are immersive and can double up as terrain for 'regular' AoS if you don't want to play WQ, but do want to add the new minis (and these sets are always the cheapest way to add them to your forces)

The book just feels clumsy and large if you placed it in the middle of the table. But at the same time, its more restrictive and less immersive than tiles. Once you've played through the handful of pages it gives you, you can't really mix it up with other WQ tiles. Sure, you can probably have tiles coming 'off' the book. And you can print new maps or pages. And there are similar style D&D books out there. But it just doesn't feel like a wargame/tabletop game to me. It feels like they are stepping back into RPG games.

Which is fine, except they are going to be charging tabletop game prices. The advantages of map and paper RPGs is they are meant to be a lot cheaper than tabletop games.

Yeah, it’s definitely a stand alone piece, not really suitable for mix and matching with other cardboard.
I prefer tiles myself (mansions of madness would look way less interesting with a book board to me), but I remember how space hulk tiles like to warp, which annoyed me to no end. So maybe the book is a good solution for a specific game.
When is this thing supposed to be out by the way? Christmas/January?

Book based maps also makes for potentially cheaper expansions.

My ideal there? Do a Bestiary Book. Like the original Quest one. From there, we can populate dungeons with whatever.

Do a Heroes book. Like when Silver Tower gave us hero stats for a mad array of hero models.

Then slip cases. One with the background and info on any new additions, one with the dungeon maps.
