my $.02, not worth that much...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Woodies and Brets can go to hell for now. Their books are good enough, and 40k can follow them for not being a singularly awesome as Fantasy!

If you want to play Traitor Guard, paint Chaos Stars on your models and put spikes on your tanks (like the Forge World Vraks lists). Lost & The Damned aren't Traitor Guard. They're far, far more than that.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I'd add Codex: Legions (all of them, not one book each as we don't need that) and Codex: Lost & The Damned, but those five above are the most needed, in that order.

I'll do army books and Codicies separately. Just for fun. Although I know dick about WHFB.

Army Books: (starting after Lizardman)
1) Dogs of War
2) Beasts of Chaos
3) Brettonia (I love the models)
4) New Race (Araby, Nippon, whatever)
5) Tomb Kings

Codicies: (starting after IG)
1) Space Wolves
2) Dark Eldar
3) Imperium Support (Mechanicus, Inquisition, Arbites)
4) Chaos Cults (Legions and/or LatD)
5) Blood Angels

To those wishing for a combined SM book...that would require too much model support. SM kits sell...so spreading them out with book releases spreads out fiscal success. That is a business fact that GW is aware of. They know their market. Face it.

To what I REALLY want:

Chaos and Imperial Forces have become unwieldy. They need a master vision on those. If they strategize, they can maximize model sales across ranges and allow more flexibility and flavor while retaining balance. And frankly, same with the Xenos.

If I were king for a day (or a few years):

Armies of the Imperium:
1) Space Marines (Ultramarines, Fists, DIY Codex)
2) Space Marine Legions (First Founding variants, GK)
3) Space Marine Legends (DA/BA/SW)
4) Imperial Guard
5) IG Regiments of Renown
6) Imperium Support (Mechanicus, Sororitas, Inquisition support, Arbites, etc)

Armies of Chaos:
1) Chaos Space Marines (Renegades and Black Legion)
2) Chaos Legions (Cult CSM armies)
3) Cult armies (like the WH/DH adversaries)
4) Lost and the Damned (the Chaos version of Imperium Support)
5) Daemons (I'd rather Daemons were put into the other books myself)

Xenos:
1) Eldar (Craftworld and basic Eldar)
2) Eldar II (Exodites, Harlequins, Special Craftworlds)
3) Necrons
4) Tau
5) Tyranids and Genestealer Cults
6) Orks
7) Ork Tribes (Feral, Kult of Speed, etc)

It's too many books (but you can cram quite a few of the books into a smaller footprint).

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.
