Me and a friend of mine recently split the Aobr contents, for $50 I got the marine contents and the books and whatnot. But I don't know what color to paint them. I posted a different thread on this recently, but didn't get much of a response. So, what chapter should I play?

You gave him $50 for the SM half? AoBR is only $60 from a standard 20% off discounter like the warstore.

Although I hate space marines, (although this is coming from a diehard Ork player) your best bets are either the Ultramarines, because they're easy to paint, the blood angels, as they have Furioso dreadnaughts and Baal Predators, as well as being the only chapter i can stand or make your own up.

I got Black reach a while back, too. so I was stuck with this same question.
Really all I can say is pick one that you will like painting, as that will be the biggest issue.
I highly recommend creating your own chapter, as its very open to whatever you have in mind.
I painted mine as a custom Chapter. No ideas on a name, but the scheme really pops.
Another suggestion I can make is to look at what other people have done with their marines. The gallery here is awesome for that!
When all else fails, pick your favorite color and move on from there!

As a side note about the AoBR boxed set, my local game store is selling it for 70 bucks, so fifty for everything but the orks sounds like a bargain.
On Space Marine chapters, I would recommend also considering paintability. I tried Imperial Fists for my first army, but after four weeks and several self-induced-painting-related concussions I decided on an easier paint scheme. On the other hand, if you could handle White Scars you will probably be fine with about anything. I would look at the special rules for chapters with special characters, and if you like one of those then play that Chapter. Otherwise, flip through the entry on the Lexicanum page. Or just pick a color scheme and make one up.
As a side note, in order to stand out, I might suggest a less common army. Novamarines look different than other chapters, and I have never seen them played before. The same goes for Eagle Warriors, Doom Legion and Fire Lords. (Just to point you in some less traveled directions)

Actually, I have also NEVER seen an asymmetric color scheme. Which would definitely make it pop.

After looking long and hard at the lexicanum chapters, I actually picked Fire Lords for myself, your suggestion just solidifies it, that's my chapter.
